In this video we show you how to perform a leak down test on an engine cylinder. The engine we're working on is a Toyota 5VZ-FE V6 engine but the techniques we share could be used for any engine.
The purpose for a leak down test is to determine how well your cylinder is holding pressure and is usually a follow-up after you did a compression test and found the cylinder compression number low. A healthy cylinder will have no more than a 5-10% loss of pressure. If the pressure loss is between 10-20%, you have a problem that might need addressing soon. If you have more than a 20% loss of pressure, you have a significant issue and some type of immediate intervention would be advisable.
The pressure escaping a cylinder could be happening due to 5 reasons. #1, the pressure could be getting past worn piston rings, damaged piston rings or worn cylinder walls. #2, the pressure could be getting past a bad exhaust valve seat or a damaged exhaust valve. #3, the pressure could be getting past a bad intake valve seat or a damaged intake valve. #4, the pressure could be escaping into a coolant channel due to a bad head gasket. #5, the pressure could be escaping into a coolant channel due to a cracked head.
