This is the first video I've seen of yours so i didn't know what you were making. I've seen similar things done for racing games, but not for a helicopter sim AND with VR! I never even thought about one for helicopters!. This would be AWESOME to mess around with! Great job!

Try using ball screw shafts instead of screw rods. They have better efficiency (95%+ vs. 40-60%), are quieter and don't get as hot. They're also much more accurately manufactured. They are however more expensive, but you should be able to get a length of 1610 screw rod for $50/meter. Unless your motors can go well above 3 000 RPM, you should directly drive the screws, no down-gearing. That's because at 3000 RPM a 10 mm pitch screw only makes 500 mm/s travel. Also, you are probably aware, but motor torque just depends on current. So at rated current it will give rated torque, no matter speed and voltage. But at lower speeds the current goes extremely high, so that's something to consider. Also a motor can only be damaged by overheating, so as long as you keep it cool enough you can overdrive it to your heart's content. Just remember that 2x voltage = 4x power.

Hi Gago, I just noticed your new actuator updates. great work! Very clever how you split the moving wooden piece and fastened the belt to it! Regarding the main belt tensioner: I had not implemented this in my new actuator, just drilled the shaft bearing holes for sufficient tight main belt. As I understand, timing belts don't stretch. did you notice any stretching after 3 months? Thanks for these clear video's! Roland

Hi Roland, at this point i have not discovered any stretching. I readjusted the tensioners on two actuators, perhaps because they haven't been tight enough after the installation.

Great Stuff! My friend has allowed me to play DCS World, using his Rift CV, and it has been awesome. So coupling this platform with VR would be a dream. Any plans to release build info; materials list, cut list and the like? I am feeling inspired after watching the videos and want to make it happen.

wow ,how good is this guy .thats how we grew up ,wed make everything we could before buying ready made items and parts,for some reason humanity is loosing these abbilities with newer generations,kids that are 14 to 20 nowdays seriously cant cook,or have the skills to look after themselves properly,mum n dad said you can be anything you want ,the skies the limit. But mum n dad forgot to mention they have to have the knowledge and work hard for it ,over time ,not instant

All the other Stewart Platforms I've seen use servos with linkages on the servo horns, but those were also much smaller. Using linear actuators seems like it has more reach, and with some redesigning, even more reach. I don't need one of this size, but I am looking to build one that can tilt to more extreme angles than the typical diy Stewart Platform.

can we download the wood work plans somewhere? dimentions are kinda hard to see in a video :)
