Over 12,000 chemicals are used in various cosmetics, and out of that number only 10 percent have been evaluated for safety.
I don’t know about you, but that is very alarming to me! It seems like a health kick is sweeping the nation, and so many people are trying to eat more naturally.
People are trying all these new diets, like Paleo, Keto, or Whole 30, but it seems so many have never actually thought about what is going in their body.
What goes on your body is just as important as what goes in it. I like to follow the rule, “If you wouldn’t eat it, then don’t use it on your skin.”
When substances hit your skin, they will seep through to the bloodstream, sometimes as fast as 30 seconds, depending on where you put them.
MY SOLUTION…MAKE YOUR OWN!
You can buy natural organic options that are great for you, but I have found that they come with a hefty price tag!
So, I have decided to make most products in my house from laundry soap to make up.
Once you get going, its not all that hard. You find many products have similar ingredients, so you will already have what you need.
This all natural DIY lip balm is no exception! It only requires 4 ingredients, and you can whip up 15 tubes in 15 minutes very inexpensively. The products are all natural and similar to what you would find in a tube of Burt’s Bee.
INGREDIENTS FOR DIY LIP BALM
2 tablespoons beeswax
2 tablespoons cocoa butter
2 tablespoons coconut oil
25 drops of essential oil (I like lavender, peppermint, or lemon)
Lip balm tubes (this recipe will fill about 15 tubes)
DIRECTIONS FOR DIY LIP BALM
1) Place all ingredients in a small glass bowl.
2. Melt all ingredients, stirring often.
You can use a double boiler, but since I don’t have one, I just placed a glass bowl over a pot with boiling water in the bottom. It works just as well!
3. Once all the ingredients are melted, you can add in your essential oil of choice.
I love the smell of lavender, but I also like using peppermint for its cooling affect.
Have fun with this part, and change it up, to find your favorite!
4. Give it a stir.
NOW IT IS TIME TO FILL YOUR TUBES!
You can use a small funnel, or an old medicine dropper, for this part.
It will harden pretty quickly, so make sure to fill them right away.
Let sit for 10 minutes, or until cool and hardened.
Put the cap on and they’re ready to go!
My kids love using lip balm, and I feel good about letting them carry around their own tubes, since it has all good, wholesome ingredients!

It can be cleaned in really hot water to melt the excess off the inside. :)

They are very hard to clean and if you do not add an anti-oxidant like vitamin E the mixture can go rancid with prolonged storage. You can get 100 pipettes for 6 bucks on Amazon.

I use disposable plastic ones and once it hardens inside I squeeze it all out. Or if it’s not disposable, place it in hot water for a few seconds and rinse it out afterwards. Hope this helps!

I should add as I’m just remembering this that I used a glass one once and as I tried to clean it and my hands were covered in oil, I ended up breaking it and slicing my hand open. So as much as I love to use the reusable option whenever possible, I love to avoid the ER more sometimes 😂😂😂

How do you die down the smell of the chocolate from a cocoa butter when making lip balms. I use fragrance oil and well that chocolate smell is over powering my fragrance oils. Fragrance oils are not cheap at all and when you put it in a lip balm. I feel like I am wasting the oil smell as the Chocolate smell is strong.

As a general rule...if it looks, smells, and feels good it's good to use. Typically anywhere from several months to a year

dolcezzeEmagia I make lip balms myself and I use Shea butter it works the same just don’t add too much because you don’t want it to be too sticky and make sure too use a good recipe!!

New sub here and so far, I have watched like 6 of your videos and really like your toxin free farmhouse lifestyle.I have tried living a toxin free lifestyle as I have asthma and bad allergies. My husband has very sensitive skin and my daughters are sensitive to things as well but I wasn't sure where to start. We do eat healthy but you have inspired me to go to my local farms to see what I can get fresh. Lately, I have been going to our local Sprouts but I recently discovered, every weekend we have a Farmers Market event near me. Also, I was so intrigued by your beeswax candle making that I ordered the products and today the wicks and beeswax came in.I am still waiting on the others. You can add the only soy wax that is Dermatology tested safe for all skin types called Ecosoya Q210 (aka CB135) I would recommend you complete a basic aromatherapy course before using Essential Oils or Blends as many common oils will effect Pregnant, breast feeding Mums, Newborns to Children of 7yrs, Medical Problems & Medications such as Antidepressants, Warfarin, Blood & Heart meds + The Elderly. Lavender with botanical name Lavendula Offisinals is the safest.

Hi Lisa! I love your channel and all the things you share! I have made several homemade lotion recipes (before I came across your whipped body butter recipe this week which is awesome) over the last year and it seems every time I use my beeswax pellets they start reforming after a few days. The lotion becomes very grainy. Have you ever had this problem with the pellets? I recently double boiled my lotion for the second time, but sure enough within a few days it became grainy again. I still have quite a bit of pellets left and would like to finish using them for more lotions and lipbalms. Any advice is appreciated!

Touching the oils with your hands like that contaminates them for a product which is not going to be pasteurized and is expected to last months before use. Use a clean spoon to scrape off the wax and oils into the bowl.
