Making micarta for my next knife build! This burlap texture should go pretty well with dark woods on a multi material knife handle. The process is very easy but I had many small voids probably caused by air bubbles, next time I will add more pressure to alleviate this problem. I think this blank can be used anyway by filling the handle with more black resin once it's shaped... :)
Thank you for watching guys!
Please leave a like and share to friends if you want to support me! Thanks! :)

Nicely done. I like how the pigmented resin really brings out the burlap pattern. Don't sweat peoples comments about bubbles. That material should make some awesome scales. Or, I should say, MADE some great scales (video like 5 years old, lol).

I started playing with micarta making recently. I made a few forms like your container but made some clamps that are smaller (l also use small c clamps). I found that a small vacuum made less pinholes and really saturated better. I had some thick clear plex so I made a vacuum chamber and stuck my old A/C vacuum pump on it. With minimal inches of vacuum it really made the consistent appearance and better looking with less bubbles and blemishes. It's just what I have been doing and I'm impressed with how it came out with all home made stuff and a vac pump. Oh asndf my pump is pretty old and weak so it doesn't take much. Like the videos a nd not trying to be negative just sharing what I have come up with Take care.

You might want to go to an air bag for more pressure, vacuum bagging gives VERY high quality pressure for veneering of all types.

Very cool! I wonder if you could dye the burlap black first and then put it in the resin so the brown burlap doesn't show. It does look kind of cool that way too though.

Hey man, very nice, I like it. Why don't you try to use vacuum to get the bubbles out of the resin? Using an old compressor from a broken fridge will do the job as well. I use it to get out bubbles from casting material...

Naah, no special task. Just a vessel that can be closed and a connection for the vacuum. The compressor have no special needs too, just connect the cables to the grid. Google is your friend :). Waiting for a new upload

Resin is pretty expensive, got the can you see here for 22€, but burlap is very cheap and I got the pigments from an used printer toner. I guess I can make at least 10 blocks with the resin I have, so I would guess it cost me not more than 3.5 € each :) The only store where I can find micarta locally sells black burlap for 30.35€ a piece+shipping! (not joking) :') So yeah much less

great vid - however use parchment paper for non stick release AND take off the ends of your mold or drill large holes for drainage and use 20% more resin . this will eliminate ALL voids simply with pressure. you don't need a vacuum chamber.
@BlackBeardProjects
@BlackBeardProjects 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the suggestion Jack :) I thought about drainage holes, but then how can the piece come out when the resin is cured? re drill the holes? Thanks again :)

That was awesome! Where did you get the pigment from? Also, congrats on your subscribers increase!!!! I remember when you were a little channel and thinking how does he not have more subscribers???? I just made some micarta from wood veneer, it turned out great! It's got the similar look of the "wood grain" Damascus! Next micarta is going to be either a comic book( either the punisher, spidey, or wolverine/X-Men) or the Walking Dead "novel", don't have any of the comics just the books of x amount of comics. I might do a couple of layers of a colored card stock to save the amount of comics needed and it'll also add some color next to the tang. Great video as always bud!!! Have you ever thought about getting your logo made for your knives and your wood work? I'm sure you've seen Glen GSTongs channel before, he knows a guy who has some legit skills when it comes to making the stamps. He recently showed the wood and leather stamp that has a heating element that comes with your stamp. It's definitely really cool looking and your logo would be awesome stamped on your projects!!!
