Very nice use of plywood and a neat design but I suspect these chairs will fail at the point where the seat meets the back legs - four screws just do not have the shear strength to support what might be a 200Lb man. I would have used two vertically cut dominoes on each leg at that point, or even better dado the seat slightly into the back legs - then the screws would work because they would not be load-bearing.

Sure would like to know where you got that nice birch plywood with those thick, even plys. Try as I might I am unable to find any with more than a 42nd of an inch of outside birch veneer and the inside plys with voids and unknown species even at my local hardwoods dealer. What you have in your video WAS the standard at lumberyards almost everywhere back in the 80's. But no more. I know your video was done 6 years ago. But, if you are still able to get Baltic birch like that please tell us where.

I am building these and have a question, you said you measured 15 1/2 on back legs for seat, but then you said 15" for the height of the front leg, is the seat tipped forward a bit?
@daphlavor6 жыл бұрын
Nice build Jonny, what the thickness size of your blade is on your bandsaw? And personally I would of used dowels and or loose tennons to do all of the joinery
@JonnyBuilds6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The bandsaw blade is 3/16ths. Also I only used screws where the flat section of the back legs mate up to the 6 degree seat back and lower stretcher. Those get plugged with dowels and everything else is loose tenons aka dominos.
@daphlavor6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick response, I have some experience repairing cheap foreign made chairs, that are thrown together with sketchy hardware, I disabled them and add glue and dowels everywhere I could, no more squeaky chairs and no screws either! Thanks
@tomruth94876 жыл бұрын
daphlavor, I'm with you on the joinery. Not sure just how strong screws are in end grain plywood, especially over time and hard use. This is another reason chairs are not easy.

The lamination effect looks beautiful, glad you showed it off at the end. It looked like the full sheet might have had some bow in it. Does the glueing take care of that or is it not really worth worrying t?
@JonnyBuilds6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Brian! Yeah, the sheet had a bow in it. Probably from sitting in my shop on its side for two months. Ripping the sheet down into small strips like I did makes this a non-issue for this build, though. Thanks for watching as always!

You could have used dominos for the angled pieces too. You drill a deep Domino hole first, then you cut the angle.
@StevenJamesPorter6 жыл бұрын
Super cool design. Another way for the front and back stretchers would possibly be to do the same method that you did for the seat and then cut them to length. This way all the lines run the same way from the different layers. More work but potentially worth it?
@JonnyBuilds6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I dig the contrast, though.
