Nate , I'm retired from Horticulture & was licensed to spray. Sadly , you may need to give yourself a Neti pot treatment after all this. Respirators are fitted for each person. Also , for the clean shaven to get the snuggest fit possible. Mold spores will pass through your beard & you can inhale them. Just an FYI

Several of my family members have had severe health issues from mold exposure. My sister had pneumonia. My niece got a severe sinus infection that left her with a hole in her soft palate that required several surgeries to repair after months on meds to kill the mold in her body. Bad stuff mold.

💙 Duuuuude! You're a champ for taking this on. You are wise and methodical in your approach. And my mild "trendy" OCD loves watching people clean so I find this awesome content! So here's the thing. I normally mind my own business about how people choose to live their lives, however... Art, from Art & Bri, was doing the same w/ his house and now he's gone MIA from YT for a little over a month now shortly after announcing that his mental illness got worse so they've stopped being a homesteading show to now complete gone MIA. YT was his family's (of 7 kids) only source of income. *I'm worried sick about them!* There's more to their story than just mold and their plate is way full with other huge stressors, but I imagine the mold exacerbated their state. My point is... ☣ *Please.Use.Every.Ounce.Of.Safety.Measure!* Someone in the comments suggested you shave your beard for a better mask seal. I also imagine the possibility of the mold and chemicals attaching to and lingering in your beard as you spray. I know you shower, but why not be safer?! I worry when I care. I'm rooting for your safe success!!!

Manager told me if I can remove the fixtures and drywall, they'd do the rest for $9k. So, I guess it's based on your budget. I'd rather spend my $$ on new lumber than other laborers. I have had mold remediation. I had it professionally done. As it was explained to me, spraying the mold is not enough to eliminate it. Mold has little feet that attach to the surface it touches. Once sprayed, the mold must be scrubbed to break the bond the little feet has with the surface so regrowth does not occur. Then the area must be thoroughly dried. Once dried, a special expensive paint must be applied to the area to seal the surface and prevent oxygen from feeding any spores that may be in the crevices. I had this done and have not had any reoccurance. It is a rough process.

I have used a similar product years ago, I had to scrape off all the heaviest mold sections and dirt etc first, then spray twice about 2 weeks apart. I also sprayed insecticide and timber preservative another 2 weeks after that. Once a year afterwards I would spray with white vinegar to stop it returning, proper ventilation is the best cure long term. Also looks like you need some more floor support down there, some heavier joist bearers and a few more piers perhaps, an experienced contractor could advise you if you can find a good one.

Take a look at the RMR86 Safety Data Sheet -- you will see the stuff is a 4 to 6% by weight solution of Sodium Hypochlorite. Clorox laundry bleach is 5 -10 % by weight solution of Sodium Hypoclorite the exact same main ingredient. Pool chlorinating liquid from a pool supply is about 12% and likely to be your lowest cost source about $5/gal at Walmart. The SDS doesn't seem to indicate any other component. Whey the stuff finally drys and the chlorine smell is gone there will be a residue of mostly sodium chloride (table salt), possibly some sodium carbonate.

There are some DIY projects to take on, for sure there are. Some reason, I would consider mold and or asbestos not included in the DIY list, as to the seriousness, severity of handling and disposing of hazardous materials. Obviously the property owners will do as they choose, but if it were available perhaps experienced help a good thing.

Nate, for future reference you could have done the same thing much cheaper with pool chorine and if you wanted to really go the extra mile some muriatic acid and a little liquid soap. Fill your sprayer with water then about 2 cups of chorine about 1/4 cup of muriatic acid and a little soap the break the surface tension of the water. If it did not quite kill it all you mix a little stronger. But 2 cups should be over kill because it take 50 to 100 oz to treat a 10,000 gal pool and your sprayer is what 2.5 gals and 2 cups is 8 oz. Also if you go with the chorine you would have plenty to spray everything the walls, the floor everything.
@Tonisuperfly
@Tonisuperfly 11 ай бұрын
FYI anyone reading this comment: “If chlorine is mixed with muriatic acid, chlorine gas is formed, which can lead to severe injuries and fatalities (SIFs) to exposed individuals.”- copied and pasted directly from scientific literature. It always pays to google first before mixing strong chemicals together, even if people online tell you it’s ok.

Nate, all power to you for tackling this job. You could have saved a few bucks as normal domestic bleach and white wine vinegar mixed together with water does the same job. If you can please upgrade your mask, as someone like you who has a beard you should try and get a positive pressure mask with its own filter and air pump that pumps fresh filtered air to your mask. IMHO the mould is being caused by lack of ventilation to the crawl space. To fix this every 6 foot make a hole in the block work (about the size of a normal house brick) and fasten some hardware cloth to cover the hole (to stop the critters from getting in). If you do this all the way around you will end up with plenty of ventilation and mould will never step foot in your place again. If you want to insulate the ceiling of the crawl space, then the insulation that has the brown paper backing would be best as it would allow air to pass through it without the loss of heat (this type of insulation allows the area to breath). Check out YT channels (DIYfferent, The Holler Homestead and Green Acre Homestead to name just a few) as loads of channels have used this product and not had mould issues. Sorry the comment is so long but I could not find a way to make it any shorter. Thanks for posting
@carolynfulton4060
@carolynfulton4060 2 жыл бұрын
To be safe from the mold he needs to have the crawl space incapsulated and install a dehumidifier. If he has openings in the crawl humidity will collect and grow mold! There are companies that specialize in this. There was very little mold in our crawl space but having incapsulation has improved the air quality in my house.
@footplate0
@footplate0 2 жыл бұрын
@@carolynfulton4060 Hi Carolyn, I beg to differ. As Nate has a damp crawl space due to the earth being damp, the only way to dry out the space is to allow air to pass through the area. The movement of the air will exhaust the damp to the outside world and thus prevent mould from growing. If the crawlspace is sealed then the damp will come back. But lets see what Nate does and see the other advice he gets. Thank you for your comment to my comment and for airing your point of view. Its always best to hear both sides of any story. So Nate its up to you (as all ways) to try and fix your problem. Thanks for posting

@@footplate0 ok-I got my advice from a professional HVAC guy-with whom another person (who’d been with his own company long term- an environmental air quality business ,agreed. I don’t know where you live but Nate is in a high humidity area-as am I. Southern summers are brutally long, hot and humid. What do I know? I’ve only lived it all my life and had great advice that solved the problem-and I KNOW that allowing humid air into a crawl space is a recipe for mold.

We had a mister when I was at Manny Moe and Jerks auto chain that would put out mist and get sucked into the AC ducts on a car to get mold off the evaporators.

My husband and I were buying property in Tennessee and we saw a few properties that had the same problem in the crawl space. @@TheKraemerLife I saw that you didn't close the suit properly, and some other details I've already forgotten. Take extra precaution when doing it, even if you film less. Was your camera covered?

Please don’t put the dogs in the truck or car when it’s hot out. It can get way above 100 really fast even if you crack the windows. Leave them in the shade outside or in the RV if there’s good circulation and/or AC.

@Lorraine Hinchliffe people like you really peeve me off. Too busy telling others how to remove the dust spec out of their eye while ignoring the 4x2 in your own !!!!!!! At NO TIME did he say he'd left the dogs in a hot truck !!! What sort of fool would care enough about his dogs getting in the toxic mould, only to lock them in an overheating truck !!!!! It just shows how ignorant you are. Go rant somewhere in a dark room please !!!!! else
