Agree. Thankfully I think this is starting to happen. Downtube and chainstay protection is faily common, and lot of bikes come with a spare roll of clear tape for contact points. Or the manufacturer (E.g. Trek) sell specific frame wrap kits for each model. Give it another few years and factory wrapped frames and suspension components will most likely be the norm.

Sorry (not sorry) to you that think that a bunch of $$$ for drop in parts that work, out the gate, without some finagling is all it takes. Some stuff works that way. But you gotta go hands on, measure, cut, modify and do the finishing touches by hand. Period.

Just saw this video. Was exactly what I was looking for. I recently bought a new Trek. KZbin is so smart seems it knows me better than myself. You did a fantastic job explaining this. One question I have for you. Could I get away with just doing the tape on the undersides of the bike and leaving the top sides un-taped? That way I would keep the black glossy look of the bike. Or in your professional experience is no area safe from gravel and nicks? Thanks for your help and passion!

Glad it helped! I tape the top specifically because I wear knee pads, thick shorts, or DH pants. Rubbing on the top tube usually scuffs up the paint pretty good and it doesn't look good after a while. You can also get clearer 3m tape that isn't as thick if you don't want to lose that shine.

I’ve been looking on Amazon for a good vinyl protection for my bike and there was to much to choose from and then I came across your video and was like great that’s the stuff I want so I clicked your link for the small tape and it took me to a page with walk slip resistant tread so it must of changed now so now I’m back to square one doh 😭😂

That's exactly what it is! It's called safety tape and it's predominantly used in bath tubs actually. Essentially water proof and durable enough to walk on, need I say more?

Thoughts on dry versus the wet (baby shampoo and water spray bottle) application methods? Can you use either method with any type of 3M film?

The wet method can work, but with the safety tape version you don't need it.

Couple of questions: 1, does the paint fade more where the frame isnt covered compared to where it is covered, and 2 how easy is it to get it off

Peels right off! Save the backing, and just cut another piece from the template and you are good to go!

I have installed this on many bikes and have never had an issue with paint peeling. But on an older bike that is already chipping, I think any tape would pull paint off. So best option would be to install right when you get the bike, then you don't have to worry about it.

Has anyone tried using Crystal Clear Gorilla Tape? I've got a roll of it in the workshop and was thinking of using it as DIY lower protection for my new Fox Factory 36 fork. Not sure if it's too tacky though and will end up damaging the paint and stickers if I need to remove it?

The textured 3M safety tape has a matte finish to it, so it will work perfectly.

That's exactly what it is, shower slip tape or safety tape. 2" is what I use.

Some links call it safety tape, some shower tread, it's all the same stuff. I use the 2" for the whole bike and cut it down.

Just bought mtb 6061 alloy what should I do to keep the shining on and how clean the frame with water or other stuffs and stop erosion. I'm confused. Some are spraying some seramic spray some weurth products please give some advice.

Covering the frame itself is really the only way to protect it. Cleaning products just make it look pretty, and don't offer much actual protection from the elements.

@@SingleTrackSurgeon guess it will for most riders. I use 3M paint protect 0.36mm for glossy frames and Xpel Stealth for matte. 👍🏼 Bit more expensive, but still okay

@@everywherelocal I was skeptical about the durability, but once you figure out the process the safety tape is the most protective thing I've found. If you are doing a gloss frame you can go a variety of different ways, but in my experience gloss frames are much harder to cover without seeing imperfections in the application. For that reason I primarily stick with the safety tape.

Any residue is very minimal, in 90% of my removals there has been no residue at all.

As long as the decals are in good condition, there shouldn't be an issue. And even if they aren't in the best condition new decals are really really easy to order. And you can get cool custom colors too!

I don't personally do frame wraps, but Ridgeline will do them for you. Just depends on what type of tape your want to use, and how much of the bike you want covered.

It is slightly textured, but thats also what allows it to seal better than the smooth textured versions. It also hides fingerprints, and if you have ever put on a clear coat it is a nightmare to keep those at bay.

I have heard on MTBR these type of tapes will damage the clear coat and paint when you remove it or replace with new tape. What is your experience with removing the tape and how do you prevent damaging the finish on the bike?

I can only speak for the kind that I use, and it comes off really easy. I know some people try to get it really stuck with a hair dryer, and that's when issues can arise. Just put it on firm with your fingers and try to go from the middle to the outside to minimize bubbles. There may be some at the end but they slowly disappear over time. DO NOT USE HEAT TO SEAT!
