Appreciate the project video. I do appreciate you keeping the mistakes in with the paint - this will help me in the future if I think its not worth it to read the directions and/or think I know better. The extra time required to fix appears to be a normal for me on most of my projects - so when others share that may help me it is appreciated.

Professional woodworker here. A few tips, If you don't mind. I have built hundreds of Murphy beds. #20 Biscuits are plenty strong enough for that use. No need to spend multi hundreds on a Festool. In fact, we used to use knock down hardware on all of the cross panels (but not the bed box) instead of biscuits for easy moving which are far weaker than biscuits and glue. You could have just assembled dry with your pocket screws and whatever joiner you have for panel alignment which would make moving that bed really easy. Also, a DIY crosscut sled on your table saw would be a lot faster and cheaper than buying a track saw just for that, but smoke 'em if you got 'em.
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 6 жыл бұрын
Good tips man! Most of these pieces were too wide for a track saw, though. And Rockler is extremely specific in their plans about what type of joinery to use, they recommend dowels, so I tried to give advice based on those plans. Thanks!
@rickylarch
@rickylarch 6 жыл бұрын
It's great that you are showing different ways to do things. Track saws are a really useful thing if you have limited space. I think they also have tracks that can rip 8' sheets. I totally understand that most people like to have plans to follow. Also, Rockler has to protect themselves from liability which is legit. I'm just adding knowledge from the hive mind. Good videos!

So the difference between a track saw and a hand circular saw with a track is the dynamic adjustability of the blade's depth and the hook that goes into the saw channel?

Just FYI for peeps, I stopped using studfinders and started using magnets. They will allow you to find the nails the builders used to install the drywall and then you can a better idea of where the studs are. So much better than a studfinder.
@craftedworkshop
@craftedworkshop 6 жыл бұрын
Magnets work pretty well but this stud finder actually shows where the edges of the stud are, so I know exactly where the studs are. Works well.

Do you think that each “door” panel being 7/16” short of the plans for the queen would be problematic? I could save on an entire sheet of plywood by reducing the cut from 31 5/16” to 30 7/8”.

Wow fantastic murphy bed Johnny! I am designing a murphy bed that can accommodate a 13 inch queen mattress. I'm thinking of using the same Rockler kit but making the depth larger to hold a thicker mattress. Not sure if the weighting will be the same when raising and lowering the bed. I don't want to find out the hard way after I make it and find out it the pistons don't work! haha How would you have changed your design if you wanted to accommodate a 13 inch mattress? Thanks!

I had a similar issue with paint on a metal project when I was using both spray cans and brush on rust paint. The brush on stuff only required 24 hours to dry, and I followed those rules when putting on the "final coat" with rattle cans. Unfortunately the rattle cans needed 48 hours ( I guess because of the propellent?), and I wound up with the crackle finish. I had to sand the half the project down to bare metal and repaint it.

Couldn’t you have just brought another similar coloured blue paint, and gone over the two sections again? & with the carcass, wouldn’t it have been a lot quicker and easier to just screw down/up through the top and bottom since you’re never going to see these pieces??

The paint saga may have been really annoying, but it does go to show that sometimes mistakes end up making for really cool innovation. That white diagonal stripe is so much more eye catching than if it would have just been 2 colors stacked.

Because I love live edge and river tables, I feel like you're not doing the led live edge river headboard any justice "hiding it" in the Murphy bed 😕. That's just me. I don't mean to take away from this build and focus on an old one, sorry about that. I love your content since day one. To me, that headboard is a piece of art that should be displayed to awe in, that's all. Thanks for sharing this awesome project. Also I hope you and your family stay safe or are safe during Hurricane Florence.

Thanks! Unfortunately all of the other beds in our house are King sized, so the headboard only works here.

Fantastic! I envy you dude... I love how you share all your mistakes xD it makes me feel better with myself since I am always making mistakes in my projects, also it shows we are all humans, we make mistakes every now and then, all we have to do is learn from them and move on. Keep up the good work man!

Thanks a lot man! I try to show my mistakes when they’re relevant, that way we can all learn from them.
