Professional woodworker here. A few tips, If you don't mind. I have built hundreds of Murphy beds. #20 Biscuits are plenty strong enough for that use. No need to spend multi hundreds on a Festool. In fact, we used to use knock down hardware on all of the cross panels (but not the bed box) instead of biscuits for easy moving which are far weaker than biscuits and glue. You could have just assembled dry with your pocket screws and whatever joiner you have for panel alignment which would make moving that bed really easy. Also, a DIY crosscut sled on your table saw would be a lot faster and cheaper than buying a track saw just for that, but smoke 'em if you got 'em.
@craftedworkshop6 жыл бұрын
Good tips man! Most of these pieces were too wide for a track saw, though. And Rockler is extremely specific in their plans about what type of joinery to use, they recommend dowels, so I tried to give advice based on those plans. Thanks!
@rickylarch6 жыл бұрын
It's great that you are showing different ways to do things. Track saws are a really useful thing if you have limited space. I think they also have tracks that can rip 8' sheets. I totally understand that most people like to have plans to follow. Also, Rockler has to protect themselves from liability which is legit. I'm just adding knowledge from the hive mind. Good videos!

They do, I have a longer track and you can also connect two shorter tracks. Super versatile tool that can stow away in minimal space. For sure, thanks man!

Just FYI for peeps, I stopped using studfinders and started using magnets. They will allow you to find the nails the builders used to install the drywall and then you can a better idea of where the studs are. So much better than a studfinder.
@craftedworkshop6 жыл бұрын
Magnets work pretty well but this stud finder actually shows where the edges of the stud are, so I know exactly where the studs are. Works well.

There's a folding leg as part of the kit. There are shots of the bed fully opened at the end of the video, but that room was pretty tight with the camera so hard to get the whole bed.

Do you think that each “door” panel being 7/16” short of the plans for the queen would be problematic? I could save on an entire sheet of plywood by reducing the cut from 31 5/16” to 30 7/8”.

@ThePhiloctopus6 жыл бұрын
To cut down whole sheets, if you already have a tracks saw, I implore you to invest in a 3 metre track and some parallel ripping guides. So much easier than wrestling with the tablesaw!
@craftedworkshop6 жыл бұрын
I’ve got the long track, a parallel guide would be a good addition!
@ThePhiloctopus6 жыл бұрын

Wow fantastic murphy bed Johnny! I am designing a murphy bed that can accommodate a 13 inch queen mattress. I had a similar issue with paint on a metal project when I was using both spray cans and brush on rust paint. The brush on stuff only required 24 hours to dry, and I followed those rules when putting on the "final coat" with rattle cans. Unfortunately the rattle cans needed 48 hours ( I guess because of the propellent?), and I wound up with the crackle finish. I had to sand the half the project down to bare metal and repaint it.
@craftedworkshop6 жыл бұрын
Yup, it’s a hard lesson to learn for sure!
