I agree. Considering the fact that that’s also how the oils themselves are packaged, that would be a good idea. Some plastic bottles leach into the liquid inside as well. One idea is to store the mixture in a dark glass bottle and then transfer a little bit of it at a time into a small plastic spray bottle.

If you go out in the sun right after putting any citrus oils on your skin, you will get a severe burn. Leave the citrus out. I saw a child on the news that had been burned from citrus. They recommend you wait an hour after topical use before going into direct sun light.
@deloriskornya67253 жыл бұрын
Not for nothing, but if you are using them, consistently, during the summer months, it isn’t going to “go bad”. I have oils, and they are in dark bottles. I use them in sprays, that I use daily. My sprays go quickly, and so far, I have had nothing, “ go bad”. Now, if I was making up massage oils, and used a carrier oil, I would definitely use a dark bottle. Because, the carrier oils could go rancid, before being used, since I don’t use them, as often. Even so, if I was a massage therapist, I would have less need for a dark bottle, because I would be using them more often. Of course, you would definitely want to keep them out of direct sun.

Just a FYI: bergamot and lemon are both citrus oils that will make your skin hyper reactive to UV rays. People have gotten very serious burns this way. Citronella, contrary to what the name suggests, is not from a citrus fruit, so that's fine. I would leave those two out of the recipe if you plan to be wearing this bug repellant on sunny days. Instead of the bergamot, use geranium, like WellnessMama, and instead of the lemon, try lemongrass essential oil, which also has bug repellent properties. The other option is to go ahead and use the citrus oils, and then just spray your bug spray on your clothes and not your skin. If you're going to do that, you could even add some pennyroyal oil, which is a powerful bug repellant, but too strong for skin. Maybe leave out the glycerine, which isn't great for some fibers. Those are my thoughts, hope they're helpful!

@Rochesterhome, great post. Anyone who wants more info on this method for eliminating mosquitos can search KZbin for "Mosquito Buckets of Doom" or ""Mosquito Buckets.". I recommend using only a quarter or a half of one of the floating mosquitos donuts per 5 gallon bucket and adding a new one regularly.
@andygold5 ай бұрын
@@user-xh4ip8kv2sI do the same. 1/4 of a mosquito dunk per 5 gallon bucket filled about half way with water. I drop in a new 1/4 chunk monthly to keep enough BT in the water. I also throw a small handful of soil, a few grass clippings, and a few leaves in the bucket to foul the water a bit. Mosquitos it seems prefer fouled water over nice, clean, fresh water. I place buckets along the perimeter of the yard, giving them plenty of places to lay their eggs that will never grow to adulthood.

I'll have to try this, my sons can't run around shirtless without getting eaten alive by mosquitos! A note about essential oils...they're not regulated by the EPA/FDA, which means the product labeling isn't checked for accuracy, which means companies have been caught straight-up lying about what's in those little bottles. Cheaper oils are often mostly carrier oil (olive, vegetable, sunflower, etc.) sometimes with synthetic scent added, and there's no real essential oils involved at all. You have to look into who you're buying them from! Transparency is very important; if you can't get info on their facility and distillation process, don't buy.

Thanks for the sharing! I would like to add an important detail that citrus essential oils like lemon, bergamot, etc. can be photosensitive* up to how they are produced. I live in the Tropics on the Pacific coast of Mexico. Right now it's rainy season when there are lots of mosquitoes. I discovered a few years ago that if I dab lavender essential oil on strategic spots on my arms and legs that it alone keeps mosquitoes away. It works much better than commercial products and doesn't leave my skin feeling greasy. While I don't doubt the benefits of the spray recipe presented in this video, essential oil can be expensive, especially if you are using so many different types. Catra Campolieto - Don't know what kind of ants are biting you but here in the South we deal with fire ants. They are nasty little creatures. Blend some Cajeput essential oil with a carrier oil - 5% dilution rate. Please use a quality brand EO. You can also use Plantain leaves (a weed that grows just about everywhere). Crush them up, mix with a little water to make a paste and apply to bite. In emergency, chew up a leaf (yes, put it in your mouth). The crushed/chewed leaves mixed with your saliva and applied to your bite(s) will take away the sting of the bite. For wasp/hornet/bee stings, use Blue Cypress EO diluted in carrier oil.

That looks like an amazing recipe, I am going to try it..thank you! One thing to note is that bergamot causes photosensitivity, so if you are going to be in the sun it can create a burning reaction on your skin. May be that geranium is a better option.

This works extremely well for mosquito repellent: myrrh resin gum oil (20%) + jojoba oil. Of course, this can be homemade. But it can also be purchased -- NOW brand essential oils makes this (small glass bottle). This is easy to apply on legs, arms, etc without any discomforting effects. 💜

Is this something I can wear all the time? Even to bed? Mosquitos attack me in my sleep sometimes. I always joke, if there is one mosquito left on earth, it will find me. That being said, I made a small batch of this (in an amber glass bottle, not plastic) and I have watched a mosquito approach me and literally turn around and fly away. I spend a lot of time on my patio, and it faces a forested area and a wet climate in Texas. I haven't had issues once using this. Although, I do try and apply every couple hours if I'm outside for a while bc I notice Mosquitos start getting closer after time passes. Still WAY better than smelling like any OTC bugs pray. Thanks so much for this video!! I now have made a large amber glass bottle amount of this since I use it often!

The glycerin is a preservative, and the alcohol helps emulsify the essential oil, as water and oil don't mix, without an emulsifier.

Some brands of witch hazel already have alcohol in it. So you probably wouldn’t need to add the vodka/alcohol. Essential Oils don’t need to be left in too much heat, they will lose their beneficial properties, especially citrus based ones like lemon & bergamot. Also, read the “other ingredients in your oils, some are not of a quality that you would want on your skin, because the skin is highly absorbent, akin to ingestion. So if you want to stay away from “chemical based EOs” don’t waste money on cheap brands! You get what you pay for.

@@barbaraclayton6053 - You're welcome! Since there are no FDA regulations on essential oils, companies can do pretty much whatever they want. Always about making an extra buck, many of them will stretch these oils with synthetics (smell close to the same as original oils but not the same - just can't do what nature does naturally :) ) It frustrates me that so many consumers are giving these unethical companies their hard earned money, and putting synthetics on their body. Comment was made above about therapeutic grade. Young Living started that "phrase" as a marketing term. It has nothing to do with quality or purity.
