Hi, I wonder why you dissolve the product to check pH if the formula is water base? Is because of your pH meter? I know there are few exceptions that require dissolving such as w/o formulas or solid products.
@HumblebeeAndMe2 жыл бұрын
Hi Naty! If you read the blog post you will find a link to an article that explains this in detail from Skin Chakra. That said, I have tried it myself, creating and measuring 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, and 100% samples of this serum. The readings were all within 0.1 pH, with some fluctuation as my pH meter does seem to just... do that. When graphed, the pH of the different solutions is a nearly flat line. I know it sort of defies logic, but I've tested it myself and I trust Skin Chakra as a chemist and formulator :)

Hi Marie so looking forward to making this one. Would love you to do a deep dive into Niacinamide at some stage as I am a bit confused about why it need to be at pH around 6 when most skin face products are less than pH 5.5 and after reading that great article on pH and getting older thought I should be making my face products around 4.5. I include Niacinamide in most of mine so does that mean it isnt effective at the pH lower range or just less effective? Cheers Sandra

Hey Sandra! I am planning to do a deep dive into niacinamide (Vitamin B3) at some point, but in the mean time I suggest checking out the Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/) entry on it. I have linked to posts from two chemists (Realize Beauty and Kind of Stephen) that discuss both the concerns with low pH + niacinamide and the likelihood of those concerns coming to fruition in varying situations :) Happy making!

You can adjust with citric acid, but citric acid is also an AHA and can have the same exfoliation-fuelled sensitivity concerns as lactic acid. That said, the concentration is so low that it really isn't a concern for this formulation :)

Why do you add Xanthan gum. The hyaluronic acid should make it thick.
@HumblebeeAndMe7 ай бұрын
0.2% of LMW hyaluronic acid (which is more than enough to be effective) is not enough to make it thick, and including enough to do so would increase the cost significantly. Xanthan gum does the job for a fraction of the cost :)

Just for side information about the serum, I am buying, I am getting of sodium hyaluronate serum base that will come in a glass bottle where the company mentioned Ingredients as: Aqua, Sodium Hyaluronate 1% (1150 kDA), are they okay for making serums? Again, I am on zero level of understanding anything so want to cross-check with you on what should I do.
