DIY Outdoor Bench

I'm going to build one this week. This looks to be an excellent design. Update: I built this bench. Great bench. A suggestion for future builds...don't use this cut list. Instead, from each 8 footer cut one 48" board. You'll be left with four cut offs. Use two of these for the 38" long legs. From another cut out the two shorter legs. This will leave you with one cut off about 48" long. I cut this piece in half and mounted each piece under the legs like skis. This keeps the bench from sinking in the ground, keeps the legs drier for longevity (they're sacrificial and can be replaced as needed), and lastly, allows you to easily drag/move the bench for mowing/trimming around.

A couole more 2x8's you could cut the banch in half to make chairs.

Good build. You can save a little coin by using non treated lumber and fire curing it with a roofing torch. I’ll be making a few of these shortly and will be using non treated lumber, jointing the edges, touting the corners and likely using dowels or pocket screws to hide the hardware.

30 deg is the original Leopold bench and makes an isosceles triangle. Rogue Engineer over engineered this bench with all the various angles. Cut everything at 30Deg and it's much simpler. Plus using pressure treated lumber is toxic. Douglas fir will last for many years especially when sealed.

Nice work. Built one myself and had the same issue with the uneven backrest rising above the supports. Then I realized the two seat boards needed to be cut a bit shorter than the backrest as they don’t carry the entire 48 inches like the backrest boards do in order to flush them to the notched out backing. Rather than belt sanding I ended up unscrewing the seat, making my cuts, and then assemble the back. But hey, you found a great solution and it looks super!

Be very careful of your cord getting caught by the blade guard lever as shown at 5:20, I've seen that cause someone to have kickback and the cord traps the guard and he ran the blade across his forearm- 12 weeks in therapy following reconstruction.

great video. Thanks. But how did you know where to attach the two leg pieces together? what's the measurement of where they cross at the bottom?

Just lay the two end pieces out on your bench (or the floor) and use a straight edge along the bottom to simulate the floor under the feet, then line it all up. Both feet should set flat on the floor. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching...

That little empty triangle made by the legs.... The front side will measure about 5-3/8" and rear side about 6-1/16". Don't worry about these lengths being exact. You're building a garden bench not stain grade fine furniture. Just make sure the bottom of the legs are in plane with one another and that both sides are mirror images of one another.

You could add one for sure. This one is sitting out side of our shooting range building. Everyone is very surprised how comfortable it is.
