Automate and speed up your etching time with a DIY PCB Shaker! It's a very cheap and simple project that only requires common materials. The machine can etching time of Ferric Chloride as much as 10 minutes, depending on the speed and the etchant's concentration.

if you set the hinge on the left instead of the middle it's a much more rigid mechanism. Just increase the radius of the wheel and lower it so the middle of the wheel is where the container is horizontal. Then you have the same action

The shaker is a good idea, with minor modification, the etching process can be sped up further. If you heat up the FeCl3 solution, the etching can be faster. But there is a catch, if using minimum amount of solution, the hot solution quickly cools down when the water evaporates during the shaking. Now, if you put the PCB and the etching solution at 80 degree C in a zip-lock bag. Then place it on the shaker, The etching process is fast and uses the minimum amount of FeCl3. What I usually do is, take a zip-lock bag a bit bigger than the PCB. Then put a sugar cube of FeCl3 into the bag, pour in small amount of hot boiling water, and then insert the PCB. Squeeze out excess air. Close the zip lock. Put it flat on the shaker. The etching solution should be about 8mm thick. When the shaker starts rocking, you will find the etching is much faster. The FeCl3 after the etching will turn from yellowish brown to a green ferrous solution. If it is too yellow, that means, there is too much FeCl3.

All these shakers, rockers, rollers, etc. (and I've made a few!) have the same problem, namely that the etchant in contact with the board still doesn't move. You need to physically move this away using a sponge or soft brush.

Can you add a source of the "SPDT" (single pole double throw) switch. Most of the small panel SPDT rocker switches I find are either momentary or two position and the ones that resemble the video are larger than what you have shown in the video (however, I have some SPST rockers from a previous project that resemble what you are showing). Also do you have a wiring diagram for your shaker?

You have a lot more faith in superglue than I do. Most cheap containers are made of polypropylene or polyethylene, very little sticks to those, hot melt would be better. It would be better to start with a USB power supply, get a gear motor for that voltage. One amp at 12v is way more than necessary for this job, did you measure the current at all? A servo motor and a “servo tester” would be an alternative to the geared motor, less drilling popsicle sticks anyway. All my complaining, I still think it’s a great idea and works, that’s what really matters!
@TechBuilder
@TechBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I do have a lot of faith with superglue, there are very little shearing stresses on these lightweight loads. As for the current yeah, I did bother to check it. If you could play back to the part where I tested it, the DC jack that you see is connected my lab power supply. There were clips but I removed it, wanted the vid to be simple and short. It showed a reading of 0.1A @12V without load and 0.22-0.34A @12 with a liquid load. I just overspeced the power supply so people wouldn't have problems. As for using USB, I like the idea but it would make the vid longer as I would have to explain on the vid how a buck boost works and how to mod the feedback resistor in order to limit the ceiling of the step up voltage. Nevertheless, thanks! 🙂

Nice project . Maybe , instead of using a buck converter to reduce voltage to control the motor . ** another way would be to use a motor controller , only a few pounds on Ebay , and has same footprint as the buck converter. ( Also , to add ' bubbles ' and heat to aid etching time, ) [ ** I think both , buck converter and motor controller work as same principle , but , the motor controller has better control ]

@TechBuilder
@TechBuilder 4 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah! It's goinf to be one of my new vids! I guess it's just years of experience in the hobby. It uses UVC, it's dangerous to humans, that's why I made a bot for it. Canvas is hard enough, but it does warp after while. My version 2.0 was made out of fiberglass (it's cheap as long as you know where to buy them). My version 5.0 on the other hand is made of a recycled poly carbonate sphere from an old lamp post.
