When I was much younger I loved water beds... I was also an avid bike rider... so I took some bike wheels and an old wooden column and made a head board... I cut the column in half and mounted to the wall... then I arranged the wheels to looking like the head board of an old iron bed... then pretty much did the same thing he did when making the bed frame for the water bed... I still do a lot of building... I built oak cabinets in my old house.... I also got a ton of old cedar boards and made my own parquet floor.. I’ve built a rolling island for my mother-in-law for Christmas one year from reclaimed barn wood.. I even built my youngest son’s changing table ( favorite project ever ) my wife loved how beautiful it was she wanted as a rolling island kinda like what I made for her mother with it... both have granite tops...also something just came back into my possession was a solid oak chopping block I built when I was 15 years old....and it’s also still beautiful too

I also built it without the platform around the frame...much more practical, and I won’t bang my shin on it. Built the frame around the boxes that I had for my temperpedic mattress so didn’t have to mount the plywood to go under the mattress.

This turned out great! Nice work and thanks for sharing! One thing I notice a lottttt of bed frame DIYers doing, though, is using solid slats of wood under the mattress. It's important to allow the mattress to breath. I'd recommend using lots of thin slats going across instead (or anything that has some gaps for the mattress to breath), for anyone viewing this.
@chelseabailey48822 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this I'm in the process of watching videos before I start on my bed ❤️
@user-gc3rv6jw3n2 жыл бұрын
And is it comfortable to lay on a wooden frame or on wooden straight planks? It has no bouncing in it... hope to hear.
@legocircus2 жыл бұрын
@@user-gc3rv6jw3n Yep! I guess if your mattress is too thin, maybe it wouldn't be as comfortable. But a lot of mattresses have built-in box spring alternatives or whatever. I built a queen-sized loft bed for my last apartment I lived in for 2 years. I used 2"-3" pieces of wood across the width of my loft bed frame and spaced them out so there was a couple or several inches between each one. My mattress was 10" thick and cost me about $300 on Amazon (Lucid brand). It was very comfortable. In summary: as long as your mattress doesn't need a box spring, it'll still be comfortable. Putting a mattress on wood slats is no different than putting it on the ground and sleeping on it, or putting it on a solid piece of wood. Good luck :)
@user-gc3rv6jw3n2 жыл бұрын
@@legocircus Thanks! So yes it means that a matress on a wooden slat is the same as sleeping on the floor right. So that was why I am hesitant about this method.. I also dont have a matress with springs in it. I prefer foam.. ;)

Looks awesome. Only changes I would make is to have the opening on the front of the nightstands so you can reach in while still on the mattress. And the part you painted black, I would have painted it to match the color of the wall so it would give a better illusion of floating.

@mengchangao34592 жыл бұрын
Hi,where did you buy this plan? I am also interested in this bed!
@Flecha575 жыл бұрын
I have two observations: 1 - I would have made the bed platform corners round. For me it is an elegant finish. Also just in case, if you trip over it, a square corner is more likely to cause injury. 2 - the floating night stand design didn't made sense to me. The mattress blocks the side it is facing. So, I can't access it if I am laying down. Once I am done using the tablet or laptop I would have to get up to put it away. Not good for lazy asses like me. I would leave the sides open, but I would have made the front piece a door attaching a hinge to the bottom piece. I wonder how functional it would be, but I would give it a try. Also I would have made them a little bit larger. Other than that, a beautiful build. Man, you have a gift. :))
@berny97535 жыл бұрын
Flecha57 I was thinking the same thing about the door hinge, put it on the side so the top can open sideways and since there would be a lamp on top of the floating night stand I would get rid of the lamp and make one built into the wall that can be turned on and off from a switch in the night stand that way you’d have space on top of the night stand with no lamp in the way

@@jpm2184 I made mine a queen. The head board is 9feet wide. I lifted it off the floor maybe 4-6 inches as we are also using a box spring. I used a 6' long french cleat to mount it securely to the wall. This way you can see more of the woodwork. He wasn't kidding when he said it's heavy. It's OMG heavy. Would be best to build it in the room but I built in my garage 30 miles away and moved it in. Was almost all my buddy and I could do to get it in the room and mounted! I made the box 63 inches wide after measuring the box spring; wanted to leave some play. Should have used 61" so as to not see that space. Slip cover covers it nicely. Since the RGB LED strip has a remote control, I did not wire it into the system with the puck lights. I used door bell wire for extending the wiring and some flexible fabric tubing to clean up and secure some of the wiring on the back. If/when I do it again, I would add a third outlet beneath one end table. I would also consider mounting wireless cell phone chargers in the end tables as he did in the LED lamp project. That'd be REALLY nice! We painted the bedroom and ceiling. Mounted the TV over the dresser, scrubbed the carpets. New rods and curtains. I made floating shelves over the bed and in the corner to match. Let me see if I can post some pics. we are very happy with it and I have requests to make another already.

@@jpm2184 most welcome. Another change I made was pocket screws instead of dowels for the floating nightstands. I'll try and watch for any questions you post here. I am not DIY Creator though!

JPM just saw the last question. I used 2x8 pine for the headboards mounted to a sheet of OSB. 2x8 for the bed frame and a 2x6 for the middle support. The cleat is 2x4 The rails on back are 2x2 The end tables are 2x10 top and bottom and 2x8 front and back. The slats and their carry are 1x3

I purchased the plans for this bed and I am in the process of making it now. You make this look easy. It is kicking my ass, but I am getting it done and learning a lot. Thank you.

Love it! So inspired. I thinking of making the headboard higher with built-in lights and maybe led light above the headboard. Wish my husband could do stuff like that.
