Thanks for the video. Your design is the best. I used your design with a few modifications of my own. I could not find the ABS, so I just used the white schedule 40. I used a solid piece across the bottom, so it is essentially a rectangle with 4 rod holders on top. After the first one, I figured out I didn't need the eye bolts to attach them, just use heavy duty zip ties around the pipe and through the D-rings, with bungees on the bottom. There is no movement that way. I also did the box-top tray. It was an excellent idea, but I had to make the tube going across 30 inches. I also painted the rod holders and the tray hunter green to match the float tube. I also use the breathable, Caddis chest waders for the cold water. Thank you for your inspiration.

Just drill through the cap and tie a knot on the end of the bungee cord, slide the other end through the holes on the end caps. If you want it water tight put some silicone inside on the knot. Can you discuss pro vs cons of a float tube vs a small kayak? Thanks a ton and love your vids!
@FisherNewb4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Float tube allows for more maneuverability in small spaces as in the docks. We have more control because our legs are always moving and in the water. Con with this is that we are slower and can't glide as much as a kayak and thus we have less opportunity to get to farther places. Kayaks can go to farther places like the bridge at HH. They are less maneuverable since you are using oars or pedals but you are always being pushed off your spot unless you anchor down each time. Tubes also deflate and can fit in the back of a car while a kayak has to be mounted on top or in the back of a truck.
@ljbix5 жыл бұрын
I found that using nylon zip ties or velcro cable ties work great for attaching the rod holder to the D rings. I now don't use the stainless steel eye bolts and clips at all. I use 11" nylon cable ties ($2.99 per 100, at Harbor Freight, or $0.06 for one fishing trip, and go through the D ring on the tube and all the way around the horizontal run on the rod holder. This allows the distance from the rod rack to the D rings to be set right so that the rods stay more vertical when I'm on the tube ande makes a very strong connection with no danger of it coming loose. It also saves a little money and a little assembly time, and makes this holder system easier to use on other tubes that might have different D-ring spacing.
@FisherNewb5 жыл бұрын
Nice! I was thinking about using zip ties but did not think it would keep the holders in place after a while. Good stuff!
@ljbix5 жыл бұрын
@@FisherNewb I should have added: you can use the ties (zip or velcro) just like the chain links, but instead I go all the way around the horizontal pipe, eliminating the need for the chain link and eye bolt. By going around, the horizontal tube can be snugged up against the D ring, and that reduces play at that connection - it's the ultimate in finding shorter connectors, and you can't get any shorter.
@ljbix5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the really excellent design and clear video presentation. I found all the components in 1.5" abs pipe size at Midland Hardware (midlandhardware.com) for very good prices.1'5" is a little cheaper and lighter, and is fine for the size rods I use (fly, light spinning, and baitcasting). It was a bit difficult to use their site to find the pieces, but I did find all of them (except I didn't look for the metal parts there) eventually. Example: the double-tee was only $2.37. A full set of parts for one side was about $27, plus shipping at $6.53 for the entire order of parts. I'll get the pipe itself locally at Home Depot or Lowes. I put a tee on the front end. Going up will be a short pipe to a pipe cap, to which I will attach a 3" round plate as the base for a Garmin Striker 4CV mount. Going down: a pipe to hold the transducer. I intend to stuff all the extra transducer cable inside the abs piping. I also included in my order male and female thread adapters, as I might decide to make the rod holders screw in. I'm more comfortable with that sort of attachment. It allows the holders to still be rotated, and provides a more secure grip that can't pop loose.

I was going to head back over there this season. I have been skunked there far too many times and paid a pretty price for it each time. @FisherNewb4 жыл бұрын
@@gatekarain9780 So I used ABS since some of the pieces I wanted were only available in ABS. They are about 2 lbs or so each? Depends on how many uprights you make, mine are 4 each. When you have the holder straight up you sometimes can't see the bite and if it is a strong one, could break your rod. Also, when you store your rod the jig/bait directly upright the hook and weights tangle on the rod. It's good to have a bit of an angle to keep the stuff dangling where you want it. My two cents

I used a miter saw on 90% of what I did. I had another project before that I made way too hard with a jigsaw but there was no need in the end. Sorry, I don't know anything about fly fishing or the rods they use. I would imagine the frame of the holder is the same and the uprights would just need to be modified to fit whatever kind of reels they use

Thanks for sharing. Was wondering if you felt any additional drag while kicking w the partial wrap around vs capping w two eye bolts where the 30 deg go?
@FisherNewb5 жыл бұрын
I don't feel any at all. I believe that we are far more affected by the winds and tides than any drag coefficient that could be imposed by the tube. Keep in mind though that if you do not wrap around and tie at the end of the wrap your rod holders could "bounce" towards and away from you. It is a common mistake

Most of the holder are just the pieces that are stock from Lowes or HD, you will have to figure out how to cut the long pieces though. I used a saw to quickly cut it. How much would you charge me to make one for my Cumberland?

Above cost of the pieces and shipping, prob $20 for time, cutting and shipping. We can work it out if you want to change anything on it

You happen to have s parts lost with measurements? Have same exact tube
@FisherNewb6 жыл бұрын
It kind of depends on how you would like your holder to be on both sides but for each side: 2 4-way, 2 90 deg, 2 30 deg, 3 5" sections, 2 3" section, 2 2" section, 2 caps, 4 SS eye bolt packs (comes with nut), 4 additional SS nuts, 4 SS washers. Then for the modular parts you can use 3 way sections or straights or caps with 1/4 - 20 SS bolts for camera mounts.
@jplee36 жыл бұрын
@@FisherNewb are the 2 30-degree connectors actually the 22-1/2 degree ones? Also what size bolts did you go with? 1/4" all the way?
@FisherNewb6 жыл бұрын
For the camera mount bolts they are 1/4 - 20 UNC x 1 machine bolts with nylon insert nuts and washers. The only other bolts used are the eye bolts which I also think were 1/4" SS. They are really long though only because they were cheaper

Nice video, I’m looking into getting me a float tube. Might go with the same one, looks very sturdy and sits up high. What did you do with the fish finder mount wires and how did you run that setup ?
@FisherNewb6 жыл бұрын
The fish finder transducer is simply running along the pipe and into the water. I have also seen some run through the pipe and fasten to one of the "legs" of the rod holder also. Very simple to attache something like that with SS eyelets or simple velcro.

Just an FYI, the Covid pandemic has caused sparse picking on the fittings you used. It forced me to use both ABS and PVC fittings and pipe to build two of these. As long as everything you use is 1.5 inches you will be fine. Gluing PVC to ABS requires using Oatey green glue (ABS to PVC Green Transition Cement, $5.98 for a can at Lowes.

Ah okay thanks for letting people know, I would never would have thought that would have been a problem when I made the video. Thank you!

I started making this today, for my shiny new Fish Cat 4. It's working out nicely. I decided to make curved washers for the eye bolts that are in the tube - I printed them on my 3D printer. If you have a 3D printer, have a friend with one, or if your local library has one (many libraries do now), you can make these. The design can be seen on Thingiverse.com - the link is www.thingiverse.com/thing:3728313. Fisher Newb: you can find me on facebook - if you message me there with your email address, we will work out how I can send a set to you, if you want a set. It's pretty nice to have the captive inside washer cemented to the inside of the ABS tube, and captive nyloc nut held in that washer. Then you can install or remove the eye bolt after the rod holder is all glued together. I'm happy with how fast this goes together. The eyebolts in the pipe sections had to be closer together to fit the Fish Cat 4 D rings, but other than that, the rest of the fit is really good.

Very fancy and cool! I am sure they would work much better. I don't have one (yet) but who knows, maybe one day

@@FisherNewb Local libraries often have printers now. I'm a volunteer at the La Jolla Library and we have two, free to use. On a quick look, the Long Beach library has 3D printers. If you go in with the Thingiverse item number (3728313), they can access the file and print the washers for you. La Jolla doesn't even charge for the plastic, but some do, so inquire first. It looks like Huntington Beach library also has printing capabilitiy now. If you print at a library, it is likely they will use PLA plastic instead of ABS. That's inconvenient because there aren't many glues that work, but you can try superglue or epoxy.

I designed a pipe mount for mounting a Garmin CV20-TM transducer (Used with Garmin Striker 4 fishfinder) to the 1.5 inch pipe. Here is a link to the design, to be 3D printed: www.thingiverse.com/thing:3737927. If you don't have access to a 3D printer, check your local library - many now offer free or very inexpensive access to 3D printers. Later, I will publish a design for a mount for the fishfinder itself.
@ljbix5 жыл бұрын
The Garmin Striker 4CV mount is now available on Thingiverse as well - see www.thingiverse.com/thing:3738258. Note: the Striker mount must be printed in ABS, and the pipes must be ABS.

Sell you a rod holder set up? I can work something up if you are looking for the pieces but you will eventually have to cement it together when you get it to where ever you are or that shipping cost would be crazy.

I’ll never purchase anything from classic accessories again. They left me hanging for two years on a replacement bladder for my pontoon boat. Always out of stock but on order and they will contact me when back in stock. This went on and on. Contacted them and they informed me they have been discontinued. This was a great product, now I’m left with a frame and one pontoon which is now useless. I won’t purchase one of these float tubes from them because I don’t trust them
@FisherNewb6 ай бұрын
They do run out alot I will give you that. I will say though, for the money and features you get they are very hard to beat. You just need to buy a set of bladders ahead of time or you will be stuck for sure. I had to wait a long time before I was able to float again in the past
