The roof looks great, awesome job! The money saved by DIYing the roof was definitely significant... But just as significant for me, if not more, is that you know every detail of this roof was done as perfectly as possible. You got to keep every nail tucked away, inspect and adjust as you want along, like with the fascia boards... the professional roofer teams that would take that much care have got to be the exception, not the rule.

Thanks Paulie!! That is another major reason I did it myself. I’m sure some pros would have done a better job but I think that would be an exception, and I was worried about the quality I would get paying a crew that’s incentivized to speed through the job.

Awesome video Shawn. I just had to repair a leak at an exposed nail head on flashing just like you showed.

No way! Those pesky nails.

Great job sir! Next time I would suggest adding a 2x2 section of ice and water around the vent pipes. cut an x in it and slide it over. then flash then shingle. This is a great job for DIY

Thanks! I didn’t show it in the video but I used Huber zip stretch tape around all the plumbing vents before the underlayment. At $200 a roll I would just take your advice next time.

Im thinking of going with either Atlas pinnacle or stormaster shakes. Do you know the differences in the two. Are the shakes any thicker than the pinnacles since the shakes are an IR shingle. I want a good thick shingle so it will be my last roof! Other than the shakes being an IR shingle. They both look pretty much identical.

They have a really good write up about the Core 4 technology on their website. It leaves me with the impression that impact resistance is not the only benefit. Better thermal stability, more tear resistant, etc. They don’t make it clear how many of those benefits make it into the Pinnacle line, as they don’t market Core 4 at all for them. I can’t say that they felt thicker or heavier duty when I was installing them, but I don’t handle enough shingles to really know. They overall felt like better quality to me than the GAF Timberline I used on my shop though.

@@ShawnFerretwhy part of Michigan are you in? I'm in Van Buren County. West or Kalamazoo. Outstanding job. I'm about to get pinnacles on my house. Not sure I can swing the extra $45 a square for the storm masters.

So, $5500 for all materials? What state?

I'm in Michigan. That was actually when OSB cost was a little higher than it is now.
