This looks very promising. I took a chance on one of the Chinese rotary positioners and didn't turn out well. The one I received does not turn true at all and the parts I need it for are very small critical parts. The speed control works great but the fact that it doesn't turn true means at a certain point in the rotation, the tungsten is too far away from the part and on the opposite side it will come close enough to touch the part. Using a precision rotary table meant for machining seams like a great solution without dropping a minimum of $1500 for a good quality rotary positioner. Thanks for the vid as this confirmed the idea is doable.

You will need an earth strap which does not operate through the bearings to avoid any problems.
@fasousa47986 жыл бұрын
exactly. an old ground lead wrapped around the work or if not possible at least around the chuck. If not you will damage the worm and pinion or bearings due to possible arcing

...You can buy a rotary ground attachment, TWECO used to have them...various types, bolt-on and magnetic.
@colmone55926 жыл бұрын
I made an earthing strap out of the blade of an eating knife. I cut off most of the handle and bent the blade through 90 degrees so it is at a tangent to the chuck backplate where it touches and exerts a small amount of pressure on the surface. It leaves a slight ring around the backplate where it contacts. Because it is quality stainless steel there is no arcing at all.

I'd be happy to pay the good-value $5 for the plans, but I would it really useful to get an indication of the total parts price first. IS that something you'd be willing to share? Is it less the $400 a cheap positioner with foot pedal pre-made costs?

Hey maybe try a 1/2 drill with low rpm, trigger might be more sensitive

Isn't this pretty much 6061's setup? I thought he already offered "plans".
@turbocobra6 жыл бұрын
Its similar, but I have an option for a corded drill and foot pedal. I dont think he ever offered any plans. He now includes his video on this in his welding training package that's $45. That vid isnt on his public channel anymore. if your looking for tig welding training then you cant beat what he offers, if you just want some plans, parts list, then $5 is pretty cheap for what i am offering. If you want to spend the time to look it all up yourself, well then it would be free! lol

can someone explain where the (ground) current flows along? through the moving steel gears & bearings? (wouldn't that wear them out?)
@J-Gx4 жыл бұрын
Yes and no :)
@hyperhektor77334 жыл бұрын
@@J-Gx thanks for your answer but i still have my doubts, since bearings have only minimal contact (ball tips + dustcover) and have the same electrical resistance(or worse) than the steel piece which will be welded. Do you have some longterm experience with these tables?
@Jim-qc6gu4 жыл бұрын
If the ground is connected to the table, the flow of current is going through the device and the bearings, and will eventually arc out. For example, if you try to weld a round object by rolling it on a steel table, it will have arc marks on it. The same thing applies to the gears or bearings.
@hyperhektor77334 жыл бұрын
@@Jim-qc6gu i found the soloution, there has to be a clamp or dragging contact of copper directly connected to the axis so there is the least resistance.
@watahyahknow6 жыл бұрын
put a piece of copper band around the chuck grouded to the table , now the current is moving through the bearings of the rotary positioner tble and prolly ruin them in the process

Gary, not to criticize but I found 6061's site because of your recommendation and this is one of his mainstays. If you are a selling plans for it now you might giving credit where it's due... unless he copied it from you. Just sayin'.
@turbocobra6 жыл бұрын
Oh I am a huge fan of his channel and work, I am a paid member of his site, and I give him tons of credit for lots of things thoughout my videos. If you buy the plans for this and watch the 30 minute build video, I give him credit in that video many times and talk about his design and what I have done differently in mine. This overall concept is just a loose copy of the very expensive commercially available welding positions, and there are other people on youtube and elsewhere that have done the same thing.
@billlangdon1936 жыл бұрын
Is there a way to sync the rotary table to your pedal so it will spin according to how much amps you are putting to your TIG. That would be cool if you could. It works great the way it is though but i was curious
@turbocobra6 жыл бұрын
Its a good thought, possible do it with an Arduino
@fasousa47986 жыл бұрын
you dont want that. if you press the pedal more it means you need more heat and if the work rotates faster then more heat will not work due to increased rpms or surface speed at the weld joint.
