I've made and sold hundreds of microwave bowls at my craft fairs. I prefer and make shaped bowls with a loop for hanging, I have hard template. I sew an X through the center, four sewn darts (different lengths for different sizes bowl base), topstitch around outside edge and sew a circle in the bowl bottom. They look great and hold up beautifully when washed and dried by machine. Others copy me at fairs and sell them for less than me, but I sell out vs. other vendors because of the fabrics, sewing and pressing I put into them (it shows!) Also, I'd not use fusible batting because of the scrim (glue that is usually petroleum based) that could be flammable. I use only 100% cotton fabrics, batting without scrim and thread and no metallics in any product. I also make plates too.

Pretty fabric! I’ve made hundreds of these. To save lots of time, you can stitch the four triangles, right sides together, then trim. I also leave mine with pointed corners, also saving time. They’re microwaveable if made with all cotton fabric, thread and batting.

I agree with Lisa Boutin. I sew then trim. I like to heat my food with the cozy on the bowl and longer points makes it easier to take out. I also have thought of using plastic snaps but wonder how the would work in the microwave. Finally i fold my bowl 8nto quarters to store inabasket with trivets.

@@karenboyd6293 What I've seen on you tube videos and after doing some research myself, plastic snaps or any kind of metal is not something you want to put in your microwave. (Unless they make a microwaveable plastic snap.) If you know of any do let us know.

I'm glad I found your video, the way you make the template's is a game changer. After watching your video, I made a template for 8", 10", and 12" bowl cozies, I love them, it is so much easier, and quicker than the traditional way. I have a tip: baste the batting to the fabric before sewing it all together, yes it adds a little time to your sewing, but in the long run, you actually save time, because you aren't constantly having to readjust everything, because something moved, just be sure to use cotton thread for basting, and sew with a 1/8" seam. Thank You for sharing your time, and your talent with all of us.

Thank you for the template idea. Just before I watched this, I very reluctantly put the acrylic into a cart to purchase. Since I am not an impulsive shopper, I decided to go back to it later. I'm so glad I didn't buy it. I like both. The bowl cozies have other uses, like dry snacks and tortillas. Just put another cozy on top and it will keep warm. Adding a little basket handle will make it perfect for toddlers treats and picnics. They can be folded in half for storage. Another idea. Instead of rounding the corners, fold them out and stitch a button to keep in place. It will give it more body and maybe you can charge a little more!

I've made these for YEARS, and never knew I could make them flat. I think I prefer your way of doing the darts in the shaped ones. I've been measuring each dart, then sewing it, and THEN cutting the extra fabric away from the dart. Your way is MUCH faster and cleaner looking. I've never done them flat - will they work in the microwave with the snaps? I bet I could make them adjustable, with two sets of snaps at each corner (we have different sized bowls).

Hi Christine! First, I'm a new subscriber and I thank you for your enjoyable videos! Second, I'm wondering if the plastic snaps would melt in the microwave? I think I'd be concerned about that? BTW, I enjoyed your tour of your quaint little shop!

Hi Nana Jill. Welcome! I have to say, I don't know personally how the plastic snaps hold up in the microwave as I use them after heating, so I asked mum who uses the same, and she puts hers in without problems. I'm a bit of a negative Nancy in that I don't recommend that they go in the microwave at all. I have horrid visions of hot bowls slipping out of the cosies as they come out.😁

Ive literally sewn and sold hundreds upon hundreds of these bowl cozies. I live in a small rural town with small rural towns around every direction but one. Every man, woman, and child has to have at least one per season. I sew my darts then cut them. I also use all cotton materials, including batting. I don't quilt the pieces, just the "x" to keep the batting in place. If you use 100% cotton materials and only the X for quilting, makes the bowl cozies microwavable. My customers prefer pointed edges to hold on to when removing contents from the microwave. I use bright fabrics left over from quilts. I also sew potato bags. I had no idea what they were. So, i looked it up. You make an envelope with fabric, again 100% cotton, just a couple lines of quilting. I personally have never used one. But, I sell a bunch of them. Long story short, 100% cotton is the key, else it can be flammable. 😊❤

I prefer to make the flat ones, but people want the shaped ones at every craft fair I attend. I don’t particularly enjoy making the shaped bowls because of all the work involved. So now I only have one or two available at the events and will take orders. That way I’m only making what I know is already sold.

I’ve made some in the past but was told by a friend who sells and sews to only use 100% cotton, fabric and cotton batting (NO SCRIM) preferably wrap and zap to avoid a fire if using in the microwave. I’ve only made them with everything 100% cotton including the thread. I’m interested to know if everything you used is 100% cotton, (no scrim) in your project. Thanks for your video your my favorite teacher and love how you let us know cost and time vs selling price! Your great!

I do use cotton fabric, and mostly use the cotton batting too. I however, tell my customers thet they're not for use in the microwave, rather for use after it comes out, and for ice cream too. I'm probably over cautious, but am terrified someone will burn themselves if a bowl slips from the cozies whilst coming out. Particularly if it's in a higher position 😀

@@ChristinesHomeAffairs Hi Christine, thanks for your reply. Here in Florida most are microwaveable. I sell mine for $15 but one gal I met in a fabric store sells them for $8 and I suspect she may not make them for the microwave. Her big seller is totes, since she lives near the beach. I love your channel and often recommend you to anyone who sews! 😁.Your very authentic and refreshing and I find those rare qualities in our changing world. Thank you for being there for us all.

Hi, Judy here, wondering if you have ever made a bag for a mahjong set. My hard case is crumbling and I see lots of lovely bags online that are way too pricey for my budget. I have all the materials I need to make a bag, but not sure exactly how to proceed. Would love to see a tutorial on this as I can't find any tutorial online for mahjong bag. Thanks so much. I use "wrap and zap" batting on my microwave bowl cozies. This fusible cotton batting, can it work as well as when heating soups, stews, etc. without burning your hands?? I would much rather use the fusible cotton batting, wrap and zap can be uneven(bulky)in some areas, so I tend to waste some of the wrap and zap.

I thought storage of the shaped bowl cozies was the original purpose for the cozies. In other words to put between your bowls in the cupboard to prevent chips and dings. I use thrifted nicer dishes as everyday items and they do get chipped and cracked on occasion. So I suppose the shaped cozies could also be dual purpose like the flat ones.
