Learn how to make a bench to store your shoes in.
This is one of my first furniture projects, but I think it turned out pretty well and I have a couple more planned. I definitely learned a lot while building it.
As always, make sure to follow all safety precautions and become familiar with safe operations before using any tool.
My family is in the practice of taking off our shoes in the house. This helps keep the floors clean, but we ended up with an unsightly pile of shoes right by the front door.
This was basically the first thing people saw when they walked through the door, or a close-up of the floor if they tripped over the shoes.
We decided to clean up the clutter by building a bench that could hold all of the shoes. It's a place where you can sit down and take your shoes off, then slide them in a cubby.
This corner of the house definitely looks a lot nicer now.

Looks good but personally i would of counter sunk the screws to avoid splitting the timber. Maybe if you used a cordless drill you would have more stopping time....! looks good though

Should've just made interlocking shelves and uprights and then you'll only need screws at the tops and bottoms of the uprights and the sides of the shelf. You made so much more work for yourself with the individual uprights, and those corner pieces 9where one split)...

Just finished making the bench and am about to start making the seat. Do you think that I could attach the cushion to the shoe rack through screws coming up from the bottom?

How thick is the foam? And I have some black leather kicking around would that work or would it be too thick for staples (might not hold) oh and I was thinkin doin mine 6 ft think that'll work?
@ReeseAuxiliaries
@ReeseAuxiliaries 5 жыл бұрын
The foam I used was 4 inches thick. You could use leather if you use good staples, and a 6 foot bench would work just fine.

What kind of screws are you using at the same time?
@ReeseAuxiliaries

Most of the wood is 3/4 inch pine. All the dimensions are in the video. The screws are 1 1/2 inch.

Do you think it would be easier to paint before or after, like you did?
@ReeseAuxiliaries
@ReeseAuxiliaries 6 жыл бұрын
If your cuts are very precise, you can paint before assembly. However, if you want to sand everything down to make all of the edges flush, you have to leave the painting/staining until after.

I heard many times that screw doesn’t hold in end grain
@ReeseAuxiliaries
@ReeseAuxiliaries 5 жыл бұрын
While a screw into end grain is not the strongest joint, it is very easy and plenty strong enough for this project, as long as you pay attention to the diagrams that I show. Normal forces on the bench do not pull on the screws.

Do you remember about how much the materials were?
@ReeseAuxiliaries
@ReeseAuxiliaries 5 жыл бұрын
If you don't have any of it already (stain, screws, plywood, etc.), it's probably going to be around $100, depending on lumber prices in your area.

@ReeseAuxiliaries

The foam has the same dimensions as the top of the bench, so 54 1/2" by 12". It was 3" thick. I bought 2 yards of fabric, but had some left over.

How many sheets of plywood you used and the length of the plywood
@ReeseAuxiliaries
@ReeseAuxiliaries 6 жыл бұрын
Only the back is plywood, so it's part of one sheet. Wait to cut it until you get the rest put together, but it should be about 54 1/2" x 16 1/4". The rest is made from 3/4" x 12" pine. See the 30 second mark for the pieces you'll need.
