DIY Shower Steamers with Recipe | How To Make Shower Shower Steamers
Learn how to make Shower Steamers in this step-by-step tutorial. Shower Steamers (also called Shower Fizzies, Shower Melts, and Shower Bombs) are similar to Bath Bombs but instead of using them in the tub, Steamers are used in the shower!
I have been making and selling these in my Etsy shop and they are my best selling item. I thought it would be fun to share my tips, tricks and recipe. Enjoy! xo
~Shower Steamer Basic Recipe
8 oz citric acid
16 oz baking soda
2 oz. white kaolin clay
1 oz. Fragrance Oil (I use a combination of essential oils and fragrance oils)
0.60 oz 91% rubbing alcohol
0.25 oz Polysorbate 80
I DOUBLED THE RECIPE FOR THE SHOWER STEAMERS MADE IN THIS TUTORIAL. This gave me approximately 32 Shower Steamers that weighed approximately 1.2 ounces each.

Polysorbate 80 prolongs the fizzing action and enhances the ability of the steamer or bath bomb to disperse the fragrance oils present. It also allows for a more even and thus aesthetically pleasing dismemberment of the coloring agent if one is included in your recipe. She advocates the use of mica powder as a coloring agent. This is fine but it will leave an unsightly ring around your tub or a little mess in your shower in the case of steamers. The poly 80 eliminates this problem as well.

James Hudak thank you for explaining the purpose of Polysorbate 80 as it was not explained in the video and the ONLY video that listed it as an ingredient.

James Hudak And there’s no explanation for the Kaolin clay? Why clay? The video leaves me with more questions for a better understanding as to “why”?

I made these twice and both times they turned out fantastic. Thank you so much. I love adding another homemade bath and body craft to my gift bags. People love them. I especially like adding mica for color and I’ve had no problems with staining of my tile or grout. They dissolve somewhat quickly so learning the proper placement in the shower so that the aroma last throughout the shower takes a little practice. I don’t have a standup mixer, but my handheld seems to work fine. I appreciate all of your experience, expertise and enthusiasm, and wanting to share. I have no interest in starting a business, but making these for family and friends is appreciated by all. When I think of the cost savings compared to buying these, I feel super happy and proud of myself.

I wanted to tell you when you said you bought the lotus flower mold from Wholesale supplies the site directed me to the lotus flower is only less than 1 inch. The lotus mold you want is called lotus “ guest size “ it’s about 2and one half inches across. The other mold is a little over an inch. Just thought I would share the info. Right now all molds are 25% off!

Wanted to share with you and the viewers when I mix my oils and fragrances I use a frothier mixer it’s little and I purchased a glass measuring with spouts at Walmart for $3 it’s with the glass measuring cups and it’s 8 ounces but tall so mixture doesn’t spill out when using frothier! Makes mixing liquids so easy!😀

This is by far one of the best put together tutorials I’ve watched. You’re great. Ty for sharing your recipe and tips. I’ve made them before but mine weren’t strong enough. Have you ever used menthol crystals in yours? I’d be curious to know your advice on how to incorporate that into your recipe. I once tried a steamer from someone that was both mentholy and tropical. I loved that.

NatalieVegas1965 : I’ve made menthol steamers for Christmas for my family(bro&fam, mom&dad,& of course me!!!). Dissolved crystals in alcohol (at least a few hours) & I used 2Tablespoons crystals in ~1oz alcohol + peppermint E.O. + Eucalyptus E.O.. The entire family loves them!

Or you can also dissolve the methol crystals in oil in a double boiler. I use avocado oil or grape seed oil. I prefer this method because I feel it doesn’t evaporate.

denisha23 great idea using oil... but I will use a cheap oil like olive or sunflower because it just washes down the drain.

I can’t tell you how many people make videos and give you the ingredients without exact measurements because they sell the final product. I've always added citric acid last to all my bath bombs because I just could not understand why you'd add it in first and then have to spend so much time trying not activate the fizzing when you add in your liquids. Glad to find I'm not the only one who appears to have that same logic haha

Why worry about whether the mix gets compacted in the bowl while you're filling the moulds? You're literally going to do the same thing in a few minutes in the mould. Pressing down in the moulds would make sure you're not leaving gaps. It just seems like an unnecessary step. Your video is fantastic and you are a natural teacher. Thanks for sharing!

I love this video! I read in another comment that you are a natural teacher, and I agree! I have made several batches of these and a majority have turned out perfect, although with the last couple I have had problems with them not drying or something. They either have signs of activating even after being in the mold for 48 hours or it looks like the oil sank to the bottom (which is the top when you take them out of the mold), and they are darker and kind of soft. I tried leaving them out to dry longer but they start to activate. Any tips or tricks or suggestions? I have literally checked, double checked, triple checked the recipe and everything is correct! Any ideas would be much appreciated!
