There is so much i agree with in this video it’s hard to know where to even start! Totally agree about hitting short irons higher and long irons lower. But I think the most important thing you said is that you can’t go out and play a couple of rounds and get the benefits of hitting single length. People who think that, really misunderstand the concept. As you say, it’s a commitment: the whole idea is that *in the long run* single lengths will make you a better player, because you are always practicing the exact same set up and swing. I know this is true. For the first several months I saw no improvement in my score. But right around the six month mark my game just TOOK OFF! I can step up to any iron shot now and feel totally at home, totally comfortable. I know exactly how to set up and how to swing. FWIW, I also agree that it’s a good idea to have some wedges that are shorter. I have two super short lob wedges (58 and 64). They are the exact same weight, length, and lie as each other. These are my “around the green” wedges. Everything else is in 7 iron length.

I have been using the Pinhawk SL irons for 2 years and I am very happy with them. I will never go back to variable length irons. The SL woods have performed very well also.

Great video I’ve been playing pinhawks for 2 1/2 years now and learnt a lot it wasn’t night and day at first my old set of pings were an inch and half longer anyway so a 37 inch lob wedge is ideal for me being 6ft 3 I’ve ended up with pin hawk 4-9 xstiff 105g kbs shafts and pw-lw xstiff 130g kbs shafts 7 iron carry is 180yards I agree with the 4 iron being lower flying 4 and 5 both carry 200 yards but the 4 rolls out another 10-20 yards depending on ground conditions I’m tempted to try pin hawks hybrids for 4-5 replacements this season to get more height or try a different shaft flex keep up the good work

Enjoyed hearing this. I have fiddled around with many of the single length offerings. I am LH so it is hard to try without buying. Love to chat about it with you.

I use the Pinhawk irons, Cobra One length hybrids, and a 43 inch Taylormade 300 Mini Driver (11.5). I have smoked golfers in my league with PXG sets and are now close to being a scratch golfer.

I just bought a single length set on ebay which is basically one of these generic (Silver Diamond) heads just single length maintaining the lie angles. One thing I noticed on the Cobra single length irons was that the lie angle for the clubs are in inverse order as in variable length irons.

I have been using SL irons for three years now. Handicap at the start was 24; now 13. The advantage is the wide zone for approach shots you get, instead of trying to work toward your favourite club's distance. It is easier to hit the green or a near miss, with little or no practice. The downside is gapping/ low trajectory with the " long" irons, even more if your swing speed isn't high. The solution is to swap to hybrids or hybrid- irons ( Cleveland HB Launchers etc) somewhere around the 26-29 degree area of your bag. You can use Cobra SL hybrids, but I found that at around 19 degrees I was getting the low trajectory, inconsistent carry/ roll ratios. I put a 7 Wood in my bag instead, except on windy days. I started with a second hand Cobra F7 stiff shaft set; like it but the shaft really was too stiff for my speed. I changed to a Cobra F9 set; I was inconsistent with them and the 5 iron ( 22) & 6 ( 25) were too close. Then I changed to Milford SL-7 (50% cost of Cobras / available in Oz and NZ) with graphite shafts and weaker lofts from 6 ( 29) -LW ( 60), adding Cobra F8 SL hybrids 22&25 degrees, F9 SL 19 (now TS2 @22.5 degree 7 wood) , Cobra 5-6 wood and Cleveland HB Launcher Turbo 12 Driver. I recently swapped out my 6 iron and added a 29 degree Tour Edge hybrid-iron. I have trialled Cleveland HB Launcher irons in the 24-30 lofts and think they would be a viable alternative to SL Hybrids. It takes at least 4 rounds to start to see the value of single length irons. Hitting a few into a net is a waste of time.

I just ordered the components to build a set of SL irons. I remember you mentioned in your first video that you questioned whether or not to tip trim the shaft to match a 7 iron in the entire set. In this video, you mention how your new heads are built with more spring/less spring through the set of heads. Is it potentially worth exploring tipping the shafts to the particular head (5 iron to 5 iron tipping specs) and progressively trimming shafts down to the wedges to wedge tip specs? In a conventional set, the tip trimming makes the shaft tip more flexible in the 5 iron and progressively less flexible down to the wedges. Would this make the set "feel" more like a conventional set as far as "springiness" goes? For example, the shafts I ordered say tip trim 2" for a 5 iron, 2.5" for 6, etc. down to 4.25" for wedges and butt trim the overall length (7 iron) throughout the set. In essence, this is called "flighting" the shafts. Just curious if you have tried this technique instead of just tip trimming for 7 iron.

Glad you agree with the lie angle changes on the GI cobra sets. I didn’t get why the keep everything uniform in the forged one but you move to an F9 or speedzone set and loft, lie, and shaft weights all change. What does the offset look like on those pinhawks? Apparently offset is used on the “long” irons of the wishon sterlings to help with shot trajectory. I never understood how but I trust Tom’s methodology for sure
@KleyGolf3 жыл бұрын
There is moderate offset on the pinhawks. Reminds me of an old Callaway X-12 type iron head.

Im going to try this with an old set of Callaway X18s. I will match 5,6,7 all to 8 iron length and keep 9,pw and sw as they are. I will leave head mass as it stands and I will leave lie angle as they stand. I will let you know how I get on. Great informative video BTW,

I built a set 4-PW all to 5-iron length & lie. 4-iron ok to hit. PW does go high : put ball farther back in stance or use PW nl length from another set.. no different than Using other wedges nl length.

Logically I see no benefit having longer shafted (8i - LW). So what do you think of using a standard set of irons just replacing the longer irons (3i to 6i) with one length irons? As I've seen that some retailers now sell the Cobra one length irons individually. E.g. (5i to LW) make up my irons, so I'd only have to replace my 5i and 6i with one length versions.
@KleyGolf3 жыл бұрын
I think that is definitely an option. If the long irons are not a strength then the shorter shafts will definitely improve consistency of strike. I say try it!

I've hit the Cleveland hybrid irons for over 5 years and love them, I had the 5 and 6 irons cut down to the 7-iron length without changing the loft or lie angle and I hit them great. For some dumb reason I got sold on the Pinhawk single length irons and ordered a set. Biggest mistake of my life. I could not hit anything straight. Tried them five times on the range and once on the course. DISASTER!!!! Luckily, I kept my Clevelands and the minute I picked them up, I was back in action hitting everything flush and straight. It was an expensive lesson, but for me, the Pinhawk single length clubs were a waste of time and money. If you want to buy them from me, contact me. I'll give you a sweet deal.

I would suggest watching Bryson Dechambeau's channel here on you tube. Combined that with single length or even normal length clubs, you will hit the ball straighter. His swing is so simple and easy to learn, I successfully applied it in just two days, one on the range, one on the course with regular length irons. Went from shooting in low 80's to one over par in just two days. I have ordered a set of single length irons.
