Nice review. I was shopping for single lengths secondhand as I'm pretty new to golf, but this was a big reason why I opted for the Cobra F7s instead of newer versions - wanted to get the same lie angle, etc instead of their newer tweaks.

I had Carl's Golfland in Michigan build me a custom set of single length clubs, but all with the length & lie of a five iron, which I hit well. But then, I kept all my wedges (PW, 53, 60) standard lengths for touch shots around the green. Five iron lengths help me not lose distances on my 3,4,5,6 irons. Even used clear epoxy to ensure even swing weights 4-9 irons. Works for me.

I’ve bought quite a few things from them. You’re not the first to keep traditional wedges either, some people are just more comfortable with them. Sounds like they had a good idea of what they were doing with the build

I was fitted this morning for the SLS irons by the local fitter here in GA, Will Pugh. I agree, these are the best single length irons I've tried. I've played almost all the Cobras...F7 through the LTDX and even the new Tec Forged OL. I've played Giga Golf and Gria Golf as well. The fitting process was great and Will knows his stuff. My current irons have Recoil 680 F4 stiff shafts and I ended up in a A flex 85gram shaft in the Edels with 16 gram head weights...the shafts for sure play stiffer than Cobra's in the same flex. I tried stiff, regular, and A flex in 85 and 95. Best ball flight, distance, height and direction came from A flex, 63 lie, and 16 gram head weights for me. My swing speed was around 85 mph. Also, I went with 3,5,7,9,G because the gapping was 20 yards pretty spot on with the test 4,6, and 8 iron. I usually play half to 3/4 sets so I don't leave it short of the green, pick the longer distance club and take a smooth swing...its a mental thing for me. I went with mid iron profile in the 3 and 5 and short iron profile in the rest due to ball flights and carry distances. It was a great fitting experience and being an engineer I enjoyed learning from Will. The clubs feel fantastic off the face, look amazing at address, and are fairly forgiving even though they are more compact than the Cobra heads. The shafts are definitely the best graphite shafts I have swung, and I have always preferred graphite shafts and a heavier head weight. A nice smooth swing with the 4 iron test club was giving me 185 yards of carry and a great peak height, much better than any cobra 4 iron I have tried. I've brought my HC down to a 6 this year and have shot par 3 times in the last two months, so I decided to reward myself with these irons, can't wait to start playing them! Also, you had better hurry and get fitted for them if you want these clubs, it is my understanding that there is a finite number of sets left and then they will disappear for a while.

@Your Average GolferWell it's not that I couldn't afford them it's just that companies like Edel don't make left handed clubs. Wishon took a long time to get out lefty sterling's and still don't offer lefty versions of their latest single length irons
@SimplifyYourSwing3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that’s the biggest issue. The companies that do single length really well, I.e. Wishon and Edel don’t have lefty options. I can see their POV, as they’re already in a niche, now you’re spending $ to build new molds and customize a new market that it doesn’t make sense if you’re not grabbing a bigger market share. However, I’d find it super hard to believe that at one point or another that there hasn’t been a custom lefty set from either company. I don’t have the contacts to confirm for Wishon, but I bet my contacts at Edel would say they’ve probably done a few sets. But I’m sure it wasn’t cheap.

It is a ringing endorsement. Have you tried the Wishon’s yet? Not quite as pricey, but also seem to be highly regarded. I finally got to try the Cobra Radspeed last weekend. Liked the 7 and PW, but was getting almost no height on the 5 iron. Same carry as the seven, with 25 yards more roll out. Still thinking about single lengths, but for a true set, it looks like it will have to be either Pinhawk, Wishon or Edel. Also, getting fitted for any of them is not the easiest thing. Having a hard time trying to figure what shafts would best suit me.

I’ve not been able to get anything from Wishon and the fitters they list around me either quit or don’t do single length. PinHawks I liked and they can be customized. @kymstock18523 жыл бұрын
Duffypratt you are not alone with the SL lower number irons. This issue is more evident if you have a sub 90 mph Driver swing speed. Many SL players use hybrids in the 19 to 29 degree loft clubs, SL hybrids or variable length. I have Cobra F9 19 hybrid, Cobra F8 22 and 25 and recently aTour Edge ironwood 29 degree to replace my SL 29 degree 6 iron. I tried Cobra F9 SL but sold them after 12 months. After trialling Cleveland HB Launcher irons I would suggest blending these with the SL irons in the higher number as a solution to getting better carry in the long irons. I was impressed with how easy they were to play with, as long as you didn’t let your ego influence your decision. They are hollow bodied like the Wishon. I had a similar indifferent response to my enquiry about the EQ1 NX irons from the nearest Wishon fitter. He only had a 7 iron to trial. I am using Milford golf SL7 irons with graphite shafts( pinHawk equivalent) only available in Oz / NZ
@duffypratt3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the replies. My driver speed is about 92 mph, depending on the club and shaft. I got 10 yards more carry from the variable length Radspeed 5 iron than the SL iron, though total distance was nearly the same. I’m also wary of the strong lofts and very low spin on the other irons (6500 on the PW, eg). There is one Wishon fitter in the Houston area, but he is only taking repairs during the pandemic. I like the idea of the Edel, but I can’t see committing approx $1800 on a set of clubs I can’t even try. And since they are custom, if they don’t work out, I will probably lose half of that on a resale. It’s a difficult thing, because I believe they are probably great, but I’ve only been playing for six months and that is an awful lot of money to put into an untested product (and idea for me), especially on a new hobby.

Not a fan of the cobra design. Too many added variables in a concept that is there to specifically remove variables. Also dechambeau doesn't have the varying lie angles and weights etc so I don't understand the reasoning for their stock sets to be that way. I Haven't tried Edel, I'm sure they are great but I wouldn't ever spend $2000 on a set of irons. Both wishon sets, the sterlings and the eq1s are fantastic. Same head weights, shaft, grip etc. Great distance gaps, and not $2000 haha. They do look more like a game improvement iron than a players cavity which makes sense since the target audience isn't necessarily low handicap playere so that may bother some people but I'm a scratch golfer and they don't bother me but im not too picky on the looks.

I’ve played Cobra for years because as much as I wanted a set that had the potential to be better than them, I wasn’t dropping the money for them. Similar to you. But after hitting the Edel, they’re staying in my bag. I wish I could test Wishon and let more people know about them. Ideally I’d love to do a full test on every single length out there. Something like 5, 8 and sw from all companies. All test subjects in the same lie and length with same grip to truly find out who is best. But the only companies that have been willing to work with me this far are Pinhawk and Edel. I purchased the Cobras and would prefer to test new models. But let’s get them all in and find out a best for beginners and forgiving. Then a best forged/low handicap option.
