Well since winter is upon us and I cant fly the ultralight right now, I'd figure i'd put those giant hobbyking motors to work elsewhere! So we bolted the giant electric motors to one of those kids snow sleds and ran down the street in it!

"Yeah this? This large electric motor and propellor? Yeah this is just some leftovers from that time I built and then flew an airplane. An actual, life-sized airplane, in which I flew and which I piloted. Yeah no big deal, you know, needed an upgrade" When you talk about it all so casually, you are doing something very well.

Surface area doesn't really matter for friction. What would matter is that friction between well waxed skis and snow is way less than between a shitty sled and snow.

@@tissuepaper9962 You may be right but if so, why do catamarans (with dual hulls and less combined water contact area) always beat regular sailboats in a race?
@tissuepaper9962
@tissuepaper9962 4 жыл бұрын
@@thuswaldner1 Hydrodynamic drag isn't the same as friction. It's much more complicated to model, and pretty much completely incomparable. Anyway, catamarans are faster because they're lighter, they're more stable, they have a wider base, which translates to more efficient use of the energy provided by the wind for several reasons. There are a multitude of reasons why catamarans are generally faster than traditional hulls.

I didn't build anything as large as you do because I was in NYC, and I think the Cops wouldn't like me trying to lift off a very large model plane with collateral damage a possibility. As far as the sled goes... Stiffer sled and outriggers should help. Your projects are a hoot.

You have the greatest constructions ever, Peter. Have you considered a "vehicle" known as a Ground Effect Vehicle? It's effectively a boat with wings that are insufficient to lift it out of ground effect, yet powerful enough to get it clear of the water. Some designs include a hovercraft type skirt to break the friction on the water, allowing for quicker lift-off. The US Coast Guard considers it a boat, while the FAA considers it a boat, because if properly designed, it cannot climb out of ground effect. There are some huge Soviet examples on the 'net but the hobbyist size is more interesting.
