Today we tackle the simple fun activity of making simple alka-seltzer rockets! Only we decide to make them a little more extreme than when we did the rockets back in grade school!

11:41 Peter salty he lost to Sam's Championship Rocket. Like a hypersonic jet, Sam's rocket used low stability to its advantage. It performed a 180 degree maneuver after crushing the height challenge to race back down to Earth in record time. Peter would do well to better understand the engineering genius of Sam's creation.

Sam's rocket was spin stabilized by it's somewhat cooked fins. Once at altitude it tumbled allowing for a soft non damaging landing. It is genius. Or dumb luck.

@@roelvian neither one carried the propulsion unit on the rocket, just delivered pressure differently, one popped when the pressure was to great, the other had a valve, and a smaller pipe to increase pressure. Papadoc Fpvp ok then, listen to me. Rocket -> self-propelled Projectile -> gets propelled Peter's rocket -> self-propelled by the reaction inside the rocket. The energy was released FROM the rocket. If you really wanted to go nuts with alka-seltzer rockets, you could try for a "hybrid" design, with a hollow cylinder core of mixed baking soda and citric acid ("fuel"), then pumping water in from the top ("oxidizer"). Getting the exhaust nozzle design and flow rates figured out would be tricky, but it might work pretty well with some trial-and-error. Bonus points if you pre-heat the water to speed up the reaction and increase the internal pressure.

drill a little hole into the cap (like 3mm), assemble it with a piece of foil between the body and the cap, maybe the pressure would rupture the foil and you´d have a little nozzle? (otherwise build a launcher with a litle needle and a guiding rail where you can drop the rocket onto the needle) also crush the seltzer for faster and more complete dissolving, baking soda and vinegar work very well as propellant because of that surface area
@kurtflint64
@kurtflint64 5 жыл бұрын
In real life this is an upside down form ballistic shooting. If you added the weight of that bottom cap and you kept the fuel on board for the bulk of the flight and therefore had to work with the rocket equation You lose out. But I'll try it this weekend with my son. Personally I think that What I am going to call "combustion control" is the next big key. Pre grind the Alka-Seltzer or and then control the point where the cap is going to release for Max pressure.

I ran to the stairs, down two flights, opened the front door and threw it as hard as I could. It burst in mid-air. Possibly one of my finest moments.

Sam for the win!!! Maximize the gas pressure with the available fuel... in other words, the CO2 gas is the propellant and ideally you would want as high a gas to water ratio as possible. Sams idea kept the gas expansion contained outside of the rocket so it was probably lighter during flight. So, a re-design that may be within Peter's definition of a "rocket" may be using two film canisters: one to act as a reaction chamber that is sealed shut after the fuel is mixed, a small tube allowing the gas to travel into the dry rocket chamber with the standard pop-off lid.

Heat the can's end and using a wooden form push the bottom in to a cone. Take another can, cut the bottom, throw it away, cut the tube in 3 equal parts, bend them with the natural bend on the outside, then glue those fins to the formed can, shape to desired form.

Here's a hint how to expand on Sam's idea legally without the external pressure chamber: Figure out a way to clamp the container and lid together so that you can get the pressure much higher than the point where the lid would normally pop off. Let the pressure build and then release your clamp.

Make a De Laval nozzle and use it in an air-powered rpg nerf thing. Basically, take one of those nerf foam footballs, put an air canister and the nozzle inside with an rc valve. Flick a switch, the valve opens, and you have launch. The foam will protect it on landing (hopefully) and the nozzle should be 3D printable, so you won't have to use metal (though you could if you want.)

A multi-chamber seltzer rocket with a blowout valve that only opens once a certain pressure is attained would be best. More chambers feeding into the output with a plug that breaks at operating levels will maximize gas production and consistent output over a greater duration. Essentially: output nozzle on bottom, main combining chamber above with rubber plug to blow out at maximum pressure. (output diameter TBD) Various fuel tanks on sides directly attached with tubes to increase gas production into main chamber. Bonus: Staging could be accomplished via a small compartment on top. A seltzer tablet affixed to the "roof" of the container with a weak bonding agent will fall and begin to mix right at the point of liftoff. After the bottom stage decelerates and falls away, pressure will release the upper stage for a short burst flight at max elevation.

I wonder if it would be possible to do two things: 1) scale up by a factor of 10 to 100 and 2) with the larger scale, it may be possible take Sam's idea of storing the pressure but this time store it inside of the actual rocket. So maybe there would be some alka selter tablets that get sealed in to the fuel tank ahead of time, and then a valve so that you could feed the water in right before launch, and then a mechanism to disconnect the water.

Hi Peter! What would happen if you shortened the tube, but then connected a secondary (small) tube that connects from the top to the bottom to relieve the vacuum pressure once it starts moving? Like shotgunning a beer!

Would it have been possible to stabilize the pressure on that first design by drilling holes close to the bottom of the tube instead of making it shorter

for the gyroscopic canister it may help to crush/powderise the alka selzer before adding it to the mix. in theory if you do this the alka seltzer will follow the water and stay on the sides as well. making them dissolve together like you need, rather than a heavy round pill that will tumble around in the canister.

What is this 'film' you speak of? I want to see the original launch tube, but first sealed and vacuum-air removed for that "hyper-loop" assisted launch.

Peter, the difference between being funny and being rude, is in how many times you do try being funny with out the funny part. But still, good video, very educative and insightful.

u simply shld've tried super gluing the tablet onto the inside of the cap, added the water in the canister, attached the setup upside down onto the canister, quickly inverting it, slowly sped up the motor so that the water is spinning equally on all sides, and u shld be gd! love the extreme measures that u took tho xD

Can you make a ground effect craft? One that is designed ground effect but could fly for short periods to avoid objects.

If you could get the timing down make a dual canister one. The first one pops and flys about 20 ish ft and then the second one pops and flys farther.. i dont think you could rule wise but funtion wise itd be a awesone project

Peter couldn't you use alka seltzer powder and water to gyroscopicly stabilize it since there won't be big chunks of alka seltzer rumbling around in the chamber

Why do you use the metric system for calculating the amount of water and the imperial system for the height? Wouldn't it make sense to use metric for both?
