SLA batteries really only deliver about half of their rated watt-hours before the voltage drops too low to power typical devices. Discharge them further than 50% of their rated capacity and you risk permanent damage. So, that 96wh battery will really only run a 50w load for about 1 hour. The LFP battery you bought would run the same light for nearly 7 hours, so it's essentially 7 times as much battery.

You do a very good job of explaining. I took that tactical box and added 2 12v 8ah batteries with a 200 watt inverter for my astronomy equipment. The ac is handy for smaller items, and the usb is good to keep my cell phone charged when it controls my telescope mount. I use a noco 1 charger for maintaing the batteries. I also have a 100wh lipo battery in a case with a 400 wat inverter. I have fuses and 2 12v outlets and a 2 usb outlet as well.
@X4Alpha4X4 ай бұрын
I built something similar to this a while back. I did use a .50 cal ammo can and i was able to fit 4 of those little 96Wh AGM lead acid batteries in there by turning them vertical. Wired all 4 in parallel. Then i got a 300W inverter and i really didnt have a whole lot of room for it, but i was able to take the inverter apart and used some double sided tape to secure the bare circuit board to the side of the ammo can. I also dremeled out a hole and installed an actual wall outlet into the side of the can with one of those outdoor outlet covers to keep water out of it and cut and attached the wires straight from the inverter board to the outlet terminals. I pulled the on/off switch and digital voltage display from the inverter housing and attached them straight to the side of the can as well. i didnt even need to extend the wires any! To top it all off i found a cheap AGM battery charger and wired it up with a standard 110V female plug out the side of the can. Outlet out the left side and the power switch, voltage display, and female power port on the right side also under a outdoor outlet cover. No solar capabilities though, You charge it up by using a standard power cable and plug it into a outlet. Its great to throw in the back of the old tractor for needing to run some lights or a drill out in the middle of nowhere.

The board doesn't overheat? I mean, as you dissassembled the inverter casing?
@X4Alpha4X3 ай бұрын
@@FBPrepping ive ran it for a while and never seemed to have any issues. to be fair the board was never fully separated, there was a base plate it was mounted to and the other 3 sides were a extrusion that slid over it. so it stayed attached to the bottom part of the aluminum housing it came with. there was also a small fan that i left included. there aren't really any air vents but it seems to do well enough that i've never had it turn off on me. I do see that i misspoke when i said i used double sided tape on the bare [inverter] board. I just took a look in it again and it was the AGM battery charger wall wart that i took apart and taped the bare circuit board to the bottom of the inside of the can.

Love how you've figured this out. There's a channel I think it's Ice Hole Fishing, that does these for Ice Fishing. You can buy the built box or the kit with or without the battery from him. Has an LED light to shine on what you're working on. (Tying a rig on) But the thing I liked was a light cup. I guess water is dark so they use fluorescent lures and the cup makes them glow. Use to fly fish at night with glowing flies and had to hold it under a flashlight. With the cup you can throw a couple in and when the one you're using starts to get weak, pull another one out of the cup.

Love the DIY mindset. LED lights use a very small Watt-hour, BUT - I have never found an actual Watt-hours consumption conversion table or chart for LED lights. I have read some are rated as "equivalent" Whrs of a incandescent. I would love to see a widespread testing of LED tubes and lights to show real world data. Stay gold.

Just a thought, have you ever considered adding a retractable cord on the inside so you always have some sort of an extension cord? I'm thinking something compact like a vacuum cleaner retractable cord. They can easily handle around a 1,000 watts or around 8 to 9 amps at 120vac. I have never seen anyone add something like this, but to me, it just seems like it could be pretty handy, and really an advantage to why you should build your own, and add a lot of custom features to it. Amazon has all sorts of replacement retractable cords that are pretty reasonable. Keep up the great work.

You could add another switch to connect and disconnect the charge controller so you don’t have to open it. You could put the switch next to the charge port as a reminder for which port is which.
@nickm91025 ай бұрын
With that case I was thinking a slightly different layout. I was thinking that the storage area on the lid would be a good place to place the controls and connections. Also in regard to the Charge controller you could add a switch between the battery and the controller. I have also considered doing a laser cut style can insert that would make it an enclosed box but that limits the capacity even more but it does give the ability to connect an external battery bank. maybe another box with just batteries and a connection.

This is a brilliant setup. My only comment of concern is the power switch and how it is wired. Most switches that style are not rated for the amperage that you will able to pull out of that cigarette outlet with the power inverter, the switch will eventually overheat and melt. It should really be wired into a relay so the switch is energizing the relay to power up the rest of the outlets.

building the same thing inside of a mini ammo can. you just have to use actual 32ah lifepo4 cells and theyre way smaller and cost around 40 bucks for a set of 4 but take 3 months to ship from china. just going to have an xd60 input to the battery and have the mppt charge controller (20a) attach through that so its not normally plugged in and taking up space. skip the bms and just run a 4s inductive active balancer and do your own cell balance leads. have one running my car for the past 8 months, saves like 50lb of weight over the big agm battery.

FYI, you don’t need a separate input for the wall charger. The mppt will pull what the battery needs, and control either solar, or wall charger watts. Then you can use any laptop charger to charge the box.

This hack is going to be a great addition to my 🦌 stand this season.!. I like the multiple ways to charge it.

I used the tall 30Ah amped outdoor battery to make a speaker in that exact can. I believe if you used one in that form factor it might fit the inverter as well but the heat would be my concern.

Awesome! I have a couple of 20mm ammo cans that I can put 2 battreys in. Gonna be a little heavier, but worth the weight

There is loss in the energy conversion process, so the time for the power bank to power the electrical equipment is not as long as you think. Usually you need to multiply it by 0.75 to 0.85 (the energy conversion rate of the power bank is usually 75% to 85% ).

the first battery can't be drawn down as far as the Lion battery... and it's about 4 times the physical size, not twice. Plus they last much longer... can be recharged and discharged more...

Hey, Keith. Well you got another great video. All good ideas convenient, everything fits in the same box. You don't think the battery would get a little warm when in use and charging ? It wouldn't need a little cooling fan or vent holes ? I know you could just leave the lid open, and it'd be fine. Just wonderin. Thanks for all the great ideas you bring us. Keep up the great work. God bless, and y'all stay safe out there in the shop

Use cases for solar generators below 500W are very limited. Charge phones and run a cooler, you might get lucky to run a cooler over night. IMO 1000+W is way better option, easily can run a cooler and charge your devices over night and has bigger inverter to run power tools.

Great video! More practical than the toolbox version, but I keep hearing that size doesn't matter... [sigh] I am unable to do this right now, but I have added this to my projects list...! On another note, and I don't mean to divulge site secrets, But I suspect that YOU are the writer of Cranky's jokes...! That would explain a lot regarding delivery and effectiveness... In closing, since the best jokes I can muster would get Bob Hope thrown out of the cemetery, so let me say, Keep doing what you love! God bless ALL of us! WWG1WGA

thanks for showing this great build! maybe a way you can fix the solar controller being powered from the battery is to add a diode in series in between the solar controller and battery so that power can flow from the controller to the battery but not from the battery to the controller .

small correction heat shrink alone will not waterproof connections alone. though they may be "weather proof" to water proof youd put liquid electrical tape under the shrink wrap after making the electrical connection.
@FishinNStuff2 ай бұрын
I may have said it wrong . I meant marine grade heat shrink . It has a glue inside it that does make it water proof . I apologize
