This is one of the better IDY spider trax dolly videos I have seen so far. Thanks for the inspiration.

Never mind on the list. I've studied the video long enough be able to eyeball the requirements. Once again, really nice work and impressively inspirational.

Graduate film student here. I made a modified version of your dolly and the same trax and it was used in three of our student films this year. All the footage looks amazing! FYI: All i used during construction was a hack saw, a drill, a ratchet set, a file, and some clamps. Easy. Ill send you links once the films are ready.

I actually own a Kessler Kpod, so it is really sturdy! But I have suggested to others if you don't want to spend that money, to go with a couple light stands. They are cheap and can be attached pretty easily.

Not bad. I like the low light footage at 1:00. For those who are asking about the rail material, it's often referred to as Unistrut, and comes in a variety of sizes. Google it.

I totally agree. So compact yet pretty powerful at the same time. Like Mighty Mouse, lol. I sent out a tweet a couple days ago to show it off and sent you a shout out in the process. Just in case you were wondering why you were mentioned, tis the reason.
@justbasl12 жыл бұрын
Eduardo, You can achieve this by using and external audio recording device and then syncing the audio to the picture after you are done. Make sure you slate your scenes because it makes it much easier to sync both cameras after have completed filming. Hope this helps, it is my quickest explanation. Thanks for watching

More like dips not built up. I might try sanding it. My problem is the weight of my rig. I could not wight around as the shots don't so I got the cinevate atlas 30 camera slider and even have problems with It and it rocks forwards and back. My skate borad might be off as well need to check it as well. Thanks for the reply and the ideas.

Pretty sweet. I may just make one this summer. I would use aluminum plates though. That steel looks hard to drill :-) This video reminded me of my diy crane video. Nice job!
@justbasl11 жыл бұрын
Are there spurs in the metal? Little chunks sticking up? I would suggest using a heavy grit sand paper and sanding the rails down, then switch to a finer grit to get a nice smooth surface.

Working on building the same set up... Might want to add how heavy the tracks are WOW I'm only making a 5ft slider
@justbasl13 жыл бұрын
@katetothelyn I used the Hercules 2.0 Head. If you are using a light head, I would suggest putting one at each end or using a pair of light stands. I also made a smaller track (3 feet) and that seems to works better on my lighter tripods.
@scollaboy12 жыл бұрын
looks awesome man!
@justbasl13 жыл бұрын
@astang21 I ended up just screwing it to the top of my kpod head. If you are having tilting issues, I would suggest using two tripods, on at either end or two light stands.
@justbasl13 жыл бұрын
@WhoIsCosy It all depends on the add ons and if you have any parts laying around. But you can build it for under $75.00. Also the length will determine to cost. If you want to build a 5 foot (which i recommend) The strut comes in 10 foot lengths, so you would only have to buy one!
@BrandonMueller10 жыл бұрын

@Villantic .... comparison to what film cameras cost these are cheaper. I believe the Red Scarlet is being used to shoot the new Hobbit movie. From what I heard, the director bought 12 of them and is filming the movie in 48fps. The first to be shown in a theatre to such a wide audience in 48fps!

Hi, very nice project. Can i also ask for the complete list of materials used and what's the head you're using to mount the camera. What's the weight limit on this? Can it handle a Canon XH-A1? Thank you.
@reballuk13 жыл бұрын
@justbasl thnx in UK i found out we call it "unistrut" I found it on ebay they seem to all be 41mm wide but they don't specify the empty gap space so hopefully it'll work with my 76mm inline kater wheels.
@justbasl11 жыл бұрын
Yeah it does just sit on the top of the rails. It rides just inside of them.
@justbasl13 жыл бұрын
@ilusaosemlimite I would recommend using the 50mm 1.4 to start out. You will get some really nice footage from this fairly inexpensive lens!
@justbasl13 жыл бұрын
@astang21 Mine does sag a little bit on the 7 foot version. I have found that it is too bulky for just one tripod so I use a few or a few light stands. You have to have a really solid head to take the stress of the dolly being out on the outer edges of the track. A couple light stands are actually pretty light and cheap! You could fit two of them in a tripod bag and take it with you. Ypu can get a decent light stand for like $35.00 and if you wanted a bag too, it would only be another $30.00
@astang2113 жыл бұрын
@justbasl Well yes, but this has to be very portable and i do not have another tripod ready for use. Im going to be using this out on the ski slopes so portability and easy assembly are huge issues. Does yours tilt at all or even a little when you have it just attached to one tripod?

@BisdremisKostas That belt that you saw in my video was from my Kessler Pocket Dolly. But you can get that belt material at either a hardware store or an auto supply store. I have been working on a new dolly system that I hope to incorporate this belt system!
@justbasl13 жыл бұрын
@Villantic Hmm this is a pretty open questions. A lot of people will have a different opinion. But I would have to say the cheapest and best camera that shoots in 24p and has great DOF (depth of field) would be the Canon T2i. This is a HDSLR, so there are some work arounds with audio and rigging up the camera for stabilization. But as for a cheaper camera that looks like what you see in the movie theatre, you would want to look into the RED line. They are pretty expensive, but in....
@justbasl12 жыл бұрын
@DukeNukemFlyingDan it is the cable from the Kessler Pocket Dolly, but you can usually find that type of belt at an auto parts store.

@ilusaosemlimite I am assuming you are wondering which codec I rendered it to? I rendered it to an H.264 quicktime at 30fps. I shot it at 1920X1080 30fps. Hope this helps!
@justbasl13 жыл бұрын
@ilusaosemlimite oh yeah if you are using the stock 18-55mm lens thats comes with the camera than you are not taking full control of the cameras abilities! For this video in particular I used the 50mm 1.4. This is about a $400.00 lens. Since then I have sold it and moved onto Zeiss Glass for most of my lenses! You should really invest in some nice glass to get the full potential of the sensor in your camera!
@shawnb3d11 жыл бұрын
