I'm using PVC tube instead of the bits of pen. I found I could make the wire fit more snugly into the tube by adding a lining. I found some old coax cable and removed the inside - must be coax as the sleeve is round inside unlike mains cable. It was a little too big, so I sliced the sleeve lengthways and cut a couple mm off to reduce the diameter to the exact amount needed to fit inside the PVC tube.

I love your work. I bought the ultimate package and am looking forward to more good stuff. I find it interesting that the shoulder armor is for the left side and the mechanical arm (which I built last year) pattern is for the right arm. I am building the shoulder armor now reversing the pattern. This comment may already had been mentioned, I didn’t read all 184.
@LostWax
@LostWax 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I am trying to remember now which arm I did. I am pretty sure the arm pattern is actually for the left arm, like the shoulder. Now I am gonna go look to make sure. Thank for the heads up though, I will check it out!

@christacruikshank6728 4 жыл бұрын
You are right. Both patterns are for left arm, I had forgotten I reversed to other pattern too. I am left handed so the right arm made sense. BTW, I wore the arm as part of a post-apocalyptic mad hatter (Alice did not slay the bandersnatch sort of thing). It was quite a hit!

Do you find that the Artist paint (Liquitex Basics) bonds to the EVA foam? Or if you scratch the foam (or flex it) after it’s painted, does the paint flake off?
@LostWax
@LostWax 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't had problems with flaking using the artists paints (I did when using house paint). I think one of the reasons I get a good bond is that I don't generally heat seal my foam before painting, so there are lots of tiny holes in the foam for the paint to grip on to. As the paint gets older and more brittle, it will crack if you flex the foam too much, but I haven't had it flake off as a result of the cracking.
@nicoledeibert1150
@nicoledeibert1150 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info. I prime foam with an elastomeric paint, which bonds to the foam and then the paint bonds to the elastomeric, but I am trying to see if there are alternatives. I appreciate your information.

I made this for a concert this past October and it turned out amazing! My only problem is, the paint rubbed off on the under-arm section of the body and one of the crossbody strap pieces fell off (though that was admittedly just a bad hot-glue job on my part). Therefore, I'd like to ask: What kind of acrylic sealer would you recommend to prevent this from happening again?
@LostWax
@LostWax 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I haven't found anything that would add enough abrasion resistance to make a big difference. The problem is that anything that goes on nice and hard is also going to crack easily because of it's brittleness. Another thing is that if you have just recently painted it, the paint won't have completely cured and might wear off quicker.

After you've made all these groovy things, does the hot glue continue to stick for a long time, or does it slowly release from the foam?
@LostWax
@LostWax 5 жыл бұрын
The hot glue stays stuck to the foam really well in the long term, just as long as you don't leave the costume somewhere where it will get really hot, like in direct sun on a really hot day, or in a hot car.

@LostWax
@LostWax 4 жыл бұрын
If you have the money and a good place to spray where you aren't breathing in the fumes, go for it, plastidip gives a great surface finish. I personally don't think it's necessary unless you are going to be using a costume a lot.

And, even though it takes a ton more time, this pattern may work with metallic parts too. Gon need to think about it first through, before i start trying anything out. It may be a dumb idea for some part and then i'm stuck with it if i just start doing.

Looking at the shoulder piece in the beginning compared to the end (or rather with the arm and without), it looks like part of the shoulder armor isn't included, is that correct? I believe it is the part that ends up attached with the hinges. If the arm is already built and this is going to be in addition to it, is that last piece not required?
@LostWax
@LostWax 5 жыл бұрын
Yep, you're absolutely right, with the mechanical arm the shoulder armour doesn't need the extra piece.

Hi, i've just found your channel, I am new to making and all the other makers i've seen prime or plastidip before painting, butyou just paint directly onto the foam. are there pros and cons?
@LostWax
@LostWax 5 жыл бұрын
I don't have a ton of experience with plastidip, but the reasons I don't use it are- you need good ventilation (and I am stuck inside 6 months of the year), and the cost. It does give a more flexible coating, but I have found that for my uses, a decent quality acrylic artists paint does a great job (yes it will crack if flexed too far though). People prime with all kinds of different things, but I like to keep it as simple as possible, so if I can use the same product for priming and painting, I will. The paint deems to do a pretty good job of filling in the pores on the foam. I hope that helps a bit:)

You may have addressed this before so forgive me if I missed it. You changed from contact cement to hot glue in your videos. I live in a humid climate in Tennessee and sometimes go to cons in Georgia which is worse. I have made EVA costumes before with hot glue and they completely fell apart. I assume in my situation I should use contact cement? Thanks for your opinion and anyone else that wants to chime in.

Yes, if you are going to be using your costumes in really hot situations, contact cement would be a better choice.

Do you think a coat of plastidip would make it look any different or better? Great video btw

is it better to paint black or brown before applying the metallic ef fect?
@LostWax

Depends on what you want it to look like. I like to use black behind silver, but I sometimes use brown behind copper or brass for a slightly less contrasty look.

@@LostWax i have to paint a orange/grey plastic nerf, does acrylic apply to plastic as well?
@LostWax
@LostWax 5 жыл бұрын
@@margheritaquerini7536 I think you'd be better with a spray paint for plastic. If you do use acrylic, you need to at least sand the whole thing with some fine sandpaper. Or spray it first with a primer and then use the acrylics.

Have you ever tried coating the raw foam in PlastiDip? I wonder if that would work.

A lot of people do use the plastidip spray to prime their foam. I did try it, but for the expense, and fumes, I decided it wasn't worth it for me. It definitely does stay more flexible than acrylic paints though.
