Thats a great idea using biomass for generating gas for running stirling engines. Very interesting!

Good afternoon! Haven't had a video from you for a long time. My comrades and I are also developing power plants based on the Stirling engine. At present, the concept of mass production of such installations is being developed. I absolutely agree that the Stirling engine can be either an auxiliary installation supplementing solar or wind energy, or an independent individual thermal power plant using cheap fuel and combustible waste, as well as other heat sources. Now we are working on the main, in my opinion, problem that limits the widespread use of the Stirling engine - its high cost.

Hi, I surely know your engines, really fantastic work. Since years I also try to reduce the cost and effort of building my Stirling engines. But in these times of energy crisis I think that the costs are not the main problem. If you really get a RELIABLE engine into production it will have success. Keep up your good work and I always watch out for new videos of you... Greetings Ralf

I'm in a fairly cold and exposed part or northern England, I can highly recommend putting aside some garden space to grow sugar beets. My bio-digester loves them as long as I manage the PH, I keep mine in a small black (black so the shed gets warm from the sun even in winter) insulated shed with a 'pilot light' to keep the whole system very warm and productive without bleeding off precious electricity. All you have to do is run a copper coil from outside, wrap it a few times around a bunsen burner and then into the flame, it provides preheated oxygen to the flame and keeps it burning, the shed never drops below 30C without electrical wastage. I also seeded my system with multiple sources of bacteria; Goat, Cow, Sheep, Goose and Rhea poop so as to increase diversity and help it reach it's potential.

Great overall idea. Try to recreate the NASA free piston sterling design. Thos could be cheaper to produce and simpler for mass application since it´s mising the mechanical linkages and increases efficiency.

Keep up with that great work! I also love stirling engines but I have "forgotten" about them the last years, I just don't have enough time to invest to make prototypes and test things. My idea is to use one or two big low diferential temperature stirling engines that run "between" the wall of my home taking advantadge of the cold outside in the winter and the warm inside (0ºC outside and 20ºC inside) or from the hot outside and the cold inside on the summer (45ºC outside and 22-23ºC inside). I think the advantadge of those low differential temperature stirling engines is that they don't make noise and you can keep them running 24/7. The problem is i don't know if the 20ºC delta temp. is enough to run them and I don't have the time to try it.

I'm impressed with your experiments. What is the motor's starting temperature? I am looking for a solution that will work efficiently with a 40-60C energy source. Can you share your opinion on this with me?

40-60 kelvin temperature difference is very low and calls for a low temperature differential engine! Look out for the work of Ivo Kolin! My engine needs at least a temperature difference of 300 kelvin!

Your design of stirling engine looks realy good. Can you test efficiency ? Defined input gas flow to burner VS electric generation ? And if you have some plans to building it, can you share ? I have idea. Put stirling hot side thru the door of brown coal boiler and cold side cooling by water return pipe from home heating = every energy is used but some energy transfer from burning coal to electricity. If it may have enough efficiency in this mode its realy userfull for energy self sufficiency. Beacause from spring to autumn has enough energy from solar panel and in winter isnt enough solar power but the house needs to be heated.

Thanks for your nice comment. I will do efficiency tests when I have the setup ready for endurance tests. As soon as I have results I will show. Your last point is exactly what I intend to do. Using unconverted heat for home heating is the key to sustainable resource use.

300 Watt electrical output, or shaft power? Is this with air as the working fluid inside the engine? If your engine is nicely sealed, try pressurizing with helium; it should make a big difference in output, even with the same energy input. Did you manage to make a small, low friction, shaft seal? I found it not that difficult to make one for a 1/4" dia. shaft.

Doesn't matter, seals won't work, it should be an aluminum casting

@@togowack yes you would always have leaks, but helium even does quantum tunnelling through solid material… with good seals the consumption can be quite low
@togowack
@togowack 2 жыл бұрын
@@lucasimark7992 Helium doesn't make a huge difference on these types of Stirlings, its used mostly with the cryogenic types. Without a sealed engine you will be relying on special harder to source materials that must always be used in controlled situations. I am making a similar Stirling to this cast aluminum sealed with magnetic drive. And he doesn't have enough fins on this one

@@togowack helium does improve efficiency
@togowack
@togowack 2 жыл бұрын
@@nirodper Hi, sometimes I come off as an ass hole in comments sections, but the improvement of efficiency with Helium is less than 5% in most cases. So the trade off is not good because like hydrogen it is notoriously hard to seal, and there is a big shortage of helium right now but nitrogen is very cheap.

Wonderful job, I thought about a revolutionary idea of the use of a Stirling engine. Using electricity from batteries to produce Hydrogen and Oxygen from water for a combustion to activate a Stirling engine with two fonctions 1/ load the batteries with a dynamo. 2/ Use the residual energy from the engine for any useful purpose. It isn't a perpetual motion, because the energy is generated from water. Maybe we can work together on it... If it works...

if you are going offgrid and cogeneration a stirling CHP makes sense with at least 500 watt or so but a gasifier or nat gas powered generator if you have access to nat gas makes more sense. firewood powered stirlling for remote area makes sense.

What do you think would be the gas consumption of a 500w Stirling?
@myengines2443
@myengines2443 2 жыл бұрын
I think an efficiency of 20-30 percent may be attainable. This sounds like little but would be a very good result for a small engine. I will calculate the gas consumption roughly later and will post it here.
@myengines2443
@myengines2443 2 жыл бұрын
My rough calculation with a calorific value of methane of 10 kwh/m3 and an efficiency of 20 percent results in 250 l/h for 500 watts output. This is just a very basic calculation and a very rough indication.

Air conditioning is one of the most energy hungry amenities in modern homes. I don’t know any offgridders who have AC…you’d have to be extremely wealthy to have the battery capacity or constant supply of fossil fuel for that. To do it with a stirling engine….oof. Consider this: his engine he describes is trying to achieve 500 watts. A typical central air unit draws around 3500 watts. Now consider your fridge, freezer, TV, desktop PC, whatever else you have…it’s a lot to ask. Your best bet is to incorporate passive solar features, high mass construction (add an earth bag wall to your south side, for example), and if you have low humidity maybe run an evaporative cooler for a few hours a day.
