Two years ago I built a shoe rack made out of hexagonal wooden compartments. We used old/spare bike tires to keep them together when the glue was drying. We made 13 hexagons, and it took us about 2-3 days 😅 and then we made the rack/desk/vanity in which to put those hexagons. It was a fun project and I’m still so proud of the end result. And I remember the work that goes into a neat hexagon, so kudo’s to you guys 😉
@redblues5167 жыл бұрын
Really loved the brass rods to hold them up, I would never have thought of that. I feel like instead of trying to fix the angles on the inside I'd just chop it down to 5.75" tall or so (before the base) and use the drill press to make a big circular hole and it'll just have to be hexagonal on the outside, but I'm glad you guys overcame the issues and found solutions. Always love the videos, and your positivity is so encouraging to beginning woodworkers like myself.
@EvanAndKatelyn7 жыл бұрын

Guys! Houstonian here that only started following you this month. I realized that you guys were houstonions when I saw your ikea in the ikea hack video. Lol. I bet they all look the same but as soon as I saw it I went to your went to your about page on you website and confirmed. Love all the vids. Harvey was such a struggle, I was fine, but trapped in my apartment complex by myself. Watching the news of the water rising everywhere was awful. The H-E-B I shop at just a mile away was completely underwater. Helicopters buzzed overhead to rescue people from high water. One of the worst things was, not so much feeling helpless, but that I couldn’t help anyone else. Thanks for ending the video the way you did. Even two years later it means a lot, and I’m sure that little bit helped more people than you’ll ever know. Keep on making!

I’m so glad I don’t live where hurricanes are really a problem.... currently. I love this project. One thing I might suggest is to do two halves of the candle holder, then you can cut the angle on the table saw on the one half, which might be a little safer. Then you can also test the fit of the candles and sand the inside if you need to adjust. I can never get all the angles cut right, so I usually do it that way so I can sand them flat and no one can ever tell the difference. I'm really glad you two are Ok, and I hope the flooding stopped at the street, stay safe!
@EvanAndKatelyn7 жыл бұрын
+The Every Maker that's a great idea! If we ever make more (haha, it took us months after making the first one to make the other two for thus video)... maybe we'll try that method 👍

That hurricane was horrible. And not even a month later Irma hit Florida and messed up my neighborhood I don’t know how our house survived while others got destroyed. I know this is late, and although I know not everyone was as lucky, I'm so happy your house wasnt flooded and that you and your family are safe. I'm from Miami, and back when Irma hit in 2017, my house got flooded. Fortunately we live in a town house (so the majority of the house was ok) but my room was the bottom floor and my parents had to basically trash most of my childhood. I love watching your channel and everything you make, and it would have been so sad to see your amazing projects ruined if you had been flooded.

You might be able to store incense inside the one that doesn't fit candles in the bottom. You might have to re-engineer the way the storage opens but you could also make it so that, if you put it on its side, it's also an incense holder. The shape sort of reminds me of one I actually have that has a cool dragon on it. There are holes in it so that you're supposed to be able to close it and see the smoke coming out along the dragon but whoever engineered it must not have thought about the necessary amount of air flow required to keep an incense burning or maybe they used better incense for their tests. In any case, it makes for a very cool incense holder and it also has a spot to store an entire pack of incense.

One trick my old wood shop teacher taught me when you use finish like that and it leaves a slightly bumpy texture is instead of using actual sandpaper to take it down since its easy to go to far, is to use just plain printer paper. It’s still abrasive but just barely enough and it takes the bumps right off.
@EvanAndKatelyn7 жыл бұрын
+Leggo0 that's a really cool tip, we'll have to try that next time! Now that I think about it 600 grit sandpaper is pretty much just as smooth as printer paper haha

Great job guys !! A trick to make sure that compound angled pieces go togheter well : glue the piece in two half ( in this case , 3 pieces at time ) , then sand each half flat on a belt or disc sander and only then glue the 2 halfs togheter . This way , even if the angles aren't perfect the finished piece has always perfect miters ;) Also, for the 3rd candel holder , the one in wich the tealights don't fit , an easy fix could be to cut the holder in half lenghtwise , than use two narrow stripes of contrasting wood a glue everything back togheter. You'll end up getting a bigger opening and a nice aesthetic touch :P ( i hope i made myself clear , english it's not my mother tongue :D ) Keep up the good work , you two are great , guys :)
@EvanAndKatelyn7 жыл бұрын
ahhhhh that's a really good trick for doing the compound angles! Did not think about doing half at a time. Always learning new stuff. For the 3rd candle holder, I think if it had been stand alone something like that definitely might have worked, though I feel if one had a strip of contrasting wood through the middle I'd have to do that to all of them so they'd match. But definitely an option! Thanks for the help and ideas :)
@ItSeemsDark7 жыл бұрын
Yeah , haven't thought about that , it would stick out like a sore thumb :D :D

I'm making some hexagons very similar to these for a nested wine rack /cubby shelf thing...I ran into the exact same issue with tapering that E&K faced here... I like the glue half of them then sand flat idea but do you have any tips to get the miters perfect off the bat? I'm using a sliding Miter saw and it's calibrated spot on but I still get the tapering! 😡 BTW great video and channel!

Wow! I've never been in a hurricane before. That looks crazy! Condolences to everyone there who lost someone or even if they just lost things. Now I have been in many, many earthquakes where bad things happened in the area. The worst thing that happened to me was my lamp fell and the lightbulb broke and that was during the worst one, which was 7.4. In total, I have been in four earthquakes in the magnitude 7 range. Hurricanes are definitely more dangerous and dangerous to many more people since you really have to get unlucky to experience anything but a little bit of anxiety during an earthquake, especially around here.

Just a thought. Loved the project... it got you a new sub!

Wow let’s put a candle in a flammable object it pretty tho wait does the finish stop it from catching on fire?

Glad you guys are safe. We just went through Irma and yeah...hurricanes are pretty awful. I'm wondering if it would be easier to make a version of this candle holder that was a cylinder?
@EvanAndKatelyn7 жыл бұрын
+olioliwoo hope you and your family are safe after Irma! So scary. Yeah I think if we had a lathe doing a cylinder would be much easier! Maybe we need to get one...

If you don’t want to see the brass rods you can cut them a little shorter and then use a punch to hammer them in further and then fill the holes with putty

You two are so cute! AHH! Man I'd love to be doing what you're doing. EDIT: I just looked at your Etsy and my heart can't handle the wholesomeness! You guys are the best!

Aw thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️

if you were to make them really tall then could you use those big candles but still have multiple candles if you cut the big ones? Also could you make them with multiple candles but also have them shine out of a little hole instead of just the top? Love ya'll
@EvanAndKatelyn5 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about cutting big candles but you could embed the tea lights deeper and drill holes through the wood for sure

+Matthew Duke glad to know you guys ended up ok in the end! We were extremely lucky that water never made it up to the house, though it was pretty scary watching it rise up the yard!
