A how-to on the folding and tying patterns to dye a bifurcated spine pattern. What's a "bifurcated spine"? The shirt has a design that looks like a spinal column that splits and surrounds the neck.
The distance between the center fold of the shirt and the spacing of the "X" pattern you make with the sinew,controls the shape of the "spinal column". It can vary from a slightly flattened circle to a rectangle with fillets that resembles that of your vertebrae.
Have fun experimenting with the design!

Im curious if there is a reason you did ice on top of dye instead of vice versa. Ive been watching a bunch of videos on this technique and this is the first time ive seen it done this way. Stunning piece!!

If I want greater control of the dye placement, I use ice on top of the dye. If I want a more organic/free expansion of the color, I use dye on top of the ice. So, for a design like this, I place the dye first to try to contain the specific colors within each tied section - resulting in a sharper contrast between sections. For some designs I even go with ice over dye on one side and dye over ice on the second side.

Hello.i love the design. just started dyeing and I need a very dark black.... which one do you use at dharma? hot black was gray when I washed out
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 7 жыл бұрын
For tie dyeing and ice dyeing I use Dharma's Better Black. It doesn't need to be heated like some of the other blacks (though letting it sit outside in the Texas summer works *very* well) and creates a nice dark, solid black. Note the mixing instructions if tie dying with the blacks from Dharma - you need to mix them at 4x the standard strength. So, 1 tsp per 1 ounce of water for the blacks versus 1 tsp per 4 ounces of water for most of the other dyes.

Why do you prefer dye then ice as opposed to ice then Dye on top? Just curious since I've seen other tubers use way less dye when putting ice on top.

You have better control of the placement/flow of the dye if it's placed on the fabric instead of on the ice. I use substantially more dye than most people so that the results have little-to-no white space and are fully saturated.

i am not getting enough white areas in my dyes. i tie up my shirts pretty tightly with the sinew and use the power ice method. any suggestions?

Are the shirts dry, damp, or wet when you tie them? Do you let them dry after being tied or dye immediately?

Hey man, love the shirt. I was curious why you tied the sinew in a x??? What does this do?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
It creates the "circle" patterns. If you don't tie with an 'x', the circle patterns will not appear and it'll be a standard accordian fold.

You could use most twine, string, or rubber bands. However, artificial sinew is coated with wax which allows it to "stick" to itself very tightly, allowing you to create a much tighter tie with sinew than you can with almost anything else. Also, since the dye isn't absorbed into the sinew, it can be reused. (Though, I toss it after each use as it's tedious to re-spool the sinew versus just buying sinew in large spools.)

Can i accomplish this using squeeze bottle?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 5 жыл бұрын
You can accomplish a similar result with liquid dye. Using powdered dye will result in color splitting of the component dye colors that adds depth/chaos to the shirt versus the solid colors of liquid dye.

Just wondering. Do commerical dyes require this much wahs out> This much bleeding? Frustrating. I want a stead fast dye that most doesnt go down the drrain or have to wash seperately without ruin a load of wash.
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 4 жыл бұрын
I hand rinse - as seen in the videos - and then only do a single wash cycle in the washing machine. After that, I have never had any bleeding issues and we routinely wash the tie dyes with whites and every other color. I've never seen an issue.

As with anything, you should always read the warning labels and wear appropriate protective gear when working with anything. A minimum of an N95 mask for any work with particulates and a minimum of nitrile gloves for caustic chemicals/dyes that stain. The only truly safe dye option for very small children with no protective gear would be to use food coloring; however, your color choice is limited and the colors will fade with the first wash cycle.

Can I do this without using ice?
@CasualCollisions
@CasualCollisions 6 жыл бұрын
You could use liquid dye instead of ice dying; however, the overall final look will be quite different since liquid dye will "bleed" between colors while powdered dye separates into component dyes when slowly diluted with ice.

Thank you so much for the reply! I went ahead and tried it and it did turn out a little differently but it's still the same basic design. I LOVE your tutorials so thanks for all the hard work. I'd love to figure out how to do the lightning bolt that actually tapers off at the bottom!
