DIY: Tie Dye Nature Scene Shirt [Long Tutorial]

100% Cotton Shirt soaked in a soda ash solution.
Soda Ash solution: 1 Cup Sodium Carbonate to 1 Gallon Water
Washable markers to sketch the design onto the shirt.
Artificial Sinew and Rubber Bands to bind the folds before dyeing.
Procion Mx Fiber Reactive dyes.
The shirt is "cured" in a plastic bag for 24 hours before being washed out.

This is so incredible. I love looking at tie dyes racking my brain trying to figure out how they are possible and then when i find out it's completely mind bending. folding in thirds then unfolding is absolutely incredible. So thankful to have your videos to learn from.

Thanks for the comment! I have a lot of fun just thinking about different folds and how the dye would effect the tied piece. I get a lot of fun effects out of the mandalas, and the nature scene is one of the few folds that I do consistently with multiple techniques. I am glad you are enjoying the videos. Yay, I've been looking for some ideas for patterns as I've done a few shirts now and I wanted something more involved? Found some amazing pictures of Google that day pattern and leaf to a dead end of pinterest, which is maddening! Some I have an idea how they're made... But others, I have no idea. Going to give this a shot I think next time. Also, a friend of mine has started using cable tyes instead of sinew, haven't seen how it will come out yet, the dog chewed up what they hesitant use and they thought the thin cable types could be interesting, even passing with different sizes of tye ha

Thanks for the comment and the question. I do not have a wash out tutorial yet. I was everything once and open it up. Then I was it 5 more times, in a washing machine.

If you wash a tee in the washing machine with all the rubber bands don't they come loose and mess up the machine? Then you wash the tee 5 more times? Just one tee at a time? I'm trying to make washing out easier. Thanks for your help. I have made many of your designs and studied your tutorials. Thanks to you I'm always learning something new.

I try to wash out pieces that are dyed with like colors. I have had some issues with fuchsia bleeding onto other pieces, so I wash that color separately. As far as rubber bands, I haven't had any issues with them clogging up the washer, I will remove them after the first washout. If I am just washing one piece, I normally hand wash it in the bathtub until it runs clear and put it through one round in the washer with non-zipper items. Zippered clothing can wreck thin t-shirts. I only wash zippered stuff with other zippered pieces. There is plenty of stuff to learn in tie dye, the videos have taught me a lot as well. Have fun dyeing!

About the dyes that you use. Do you have to use your dyes within 45 minutes to an hour within making them? Or can you save them for future uses?

I use my dyes within 12 hours of mixing them. My dyeing sessions normally takes me a few hours.

Are Your shirts still damp when You add the dye, or do You let them completely dry out after You tie them for better saruration?

I use procion mx fiber reactive dye from dharmatrading.com or bestdye.com I wash them 6 times in the washing machine.

What is the lb test of the sinew you use?

I am not sure, maybe between 45 and 75 lbs.
