Here is a tutorial I made to show more advanced dyers how to tie dye a Grateful Dead steal your face. The end results were not as good as I'd hoped because I didn't tie it TIGHT as it should have been, BUT it does explain the process. I was taught how to dye many years ago & I just wanted to share. The video is sped up as you can tell- about 5X normal speed on some parts. Good luck with your dying!
Please check out my website for my tie dye and handmade clothing. jtribecreations.com/

At the end of the video [6:30] you said the shirt didn't come out great, but I really like it. I understand you may have had an image in mind of what you wanted (with tighter, more controlled lines) but I really like this...almost impressionistic...version a lot. I know this video is a few years old, but new to me. Fantastic job. I would prefer this style to one with very precise lines. If it were a mandala type design or something, tight, neat lines are essential (or it's just a brown blob). But this is fantastic.

Yes, stitching can get clean lines but I was just doing tying there. I RARELY stitch except for non symmetrical work but it's good for beginners. I tend to speed through stuff when I'm trying to show or explain. . But thanks for the love!!!

I just tried this out for the first time. It turned out ok, but not as good as yours. I LOVE the idea of using a syringe do direct your dye (my squeeze bottles have a habit of leaking where I don't want it). I tried syringes and they worked great!

I'm using oral syringes ( you can get them at farm or pet supply stores). You can also use meat flavor injectors if you cut & sand down the tips. Gives me better control over dye placement than dye bottles.

Your shirts and tapestries are absolutely incredible! I'm an enthusiast myself. Once you soak a shirt in soda ash can you let it dry completely before dying? Does the dye need to be applied to a damp shirt? I have not tried to dye a completely dry shirt, but I think it might help with color bleeding/running. Thanks!
@lilgamoma
@lilgamoma 9 жыл бұрын
I usually soak everything and air dry after spinning it out. So I store it ready to dye dry in plastic bins. Knits do fine dry but woven fabrics (like for tapestries) do better just slightly damp. I will dampen with a spray bottle filled with soda ash. HTH!

I appreciate your criticism. I speed up much of the footage because it would have been a very long video if not. It's meant to be more like a basic breakdown of how to do one for people how are more experienced dyers. It is impossible to put the camera on the other side of the table because it's against a wall. It was the best view I could get but I will take it into consideration. I hope to do more "how to" videos in the future as I am usually making something & would like to make them better.
@lilgamoma
@lilgamoma 11 жыл бұрын
Hi Kelleigh- I am also in Addicted to Tiedye on FB. :) I deleted all the footage after I posted this video though(my poor hard drive can only hold so much!). But I did use sinew to get a tighter line (better than rubber bands). As for the nose & teeth- they are folded to meet the lines then tied off (does that make sense?) The teeth are "almost" done like an accordion fold then tied around the edge. Best thing is just give it a try! Lots of luck to you!

Not sure what you are asking? You want to tie dye something to look like that? I'd guess an accordion fold with a zig zag instead of straight across even and then dye pink and just dye one side black. I figured how to dye with many experiments as failures before success. Good luck with all your dyeing projects.

Rhonda, Is there any way you could bring in a closer view of the tyeing of the teeth and nose i was unsure if you did this with rubber bands or sinew on the nose? I'm confused about where to put the dye. The video is so fast, it's hard to tell how you tied the nose up. I also can't tell where you're supposed to put which dye on the skull. Yours looks SO great, but mine came out kind of crappy, the teeth were just one lIne of white. And the nostrils on mine were not perfect
@lilgamoma
@lilgamoma 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's speed up or it'd probably would have been about a half hour long. But please don't judge your results against mine. When I was first learning I messed up so much. Now I've been dyeing for a few decades but I still have designs that don't come out the way I want but we are our own worst critics. So practice makes progress!
@melaniecarlson6615
@melaniecarlson6615 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm not trying to judge you. I should have been more clear with my question: where are you putting the dye in the skull? I can't tell where the dye is going inside the face. Yours come out really great, and you're very good at what you do. Any help will be appreciated thank you for your response
@lilgamoma
@lilgamoma 3 жыл бұрын
Okay, I think I understand your question. So the dye will go on the ties/where you draw out the design. I use washable markers so your dye gets placed directly on those lines. I hope that helps with understanding a little better. And variations always make each one unique. Good luck with your future dyeing attempts!
