I made some that are similar except: mine are for a-frame tongues so mine are boxes made from 6 inch c-channel. I like how yours have guides for the inside piece. I did not put a front plate over the lock ( like the Proven) but you make me think about doing so. That would help prevent drilling or melting the lock. Great job, you think like me.

I believe you’re right homemade is the Way to go, no premade thing can fit your trailer The way you designed that. My trailer got stolen and I’m replacing it. I will definitely be building my own lock for it. As well as GPS and some sort of wheel lock. Since mine is basically a cargo conversion I was thinking about putting RV jacks in the back corners and then having those lock in the raised position.
@homealone50872 жыл бұрын
I was thinking of the jack method as well, but if thats the only deterrent you have they could hook up and pull it right off the jacks.

Excellent work. Couple tips. Use something other than the bolts that are holding your chain end to the trailer. Ok follow the chains all the way from the trailer hitch lock all the way back to trailer. Also the hand break. Same with the hand brake. I'm no machine guy and I don't know the correct wording but use some other type "bolts" that doesn't take a common mm wrench to undue the chains from the hitch. Maybe a star type bolts. Looks great though. Cheers.
@Mikefngarage5 жыл бұрын
yea there calle tamper proof bolts. that take special tools to remove. thanks for the info and the comment. Good ide.
@hotstud17 Жыл бұрын
I would say if they wanted to and they’re smart they wouldn’t even need to cut the lock. Just build up a coupling device or throw some chains on it or around the neck and pull away. Best security is insurity lol. Or lock it in a building and make it hard to move

Excellent custom housing to suit your needs! The only thing I can see as the weak point is the puck lock cylinder itself, the core can be pulled out with a pro cylinder puller or someone making a cheap custom one. Top workmanship. I need to make my own housing to suit my coupler now. :)🍻🤠🇦🇺

Pretty slick. Now all you have to do is spot weld the bolts that hold the hitch onto the tongue so the thieves don't substitute their own.

I like it I'm going to try something similar for my 60's canned ham tongue to ensure it'll be safe at home as well as when I'm camping I'm also going to be welding a thick plate over the a frame section so a chain can't be tossed through it to bypass the tongue lock. I'll also be tack welding my LP canister tray down bur just enough to hold the LP Cans but not so strong as to create a point that a thief could chain around it

4:54 maybe the angle that shows a GAP or shadow, is that a 1/8 to 1/4 gap? Might be able to get a pry bar in there! ?? But GREAT design, the gray part of the trailer that is just in front of the reflector on the yellow part, is it bolted or welded to the yellow part?? Can it be unbolted where that whole end WITH the new lock can be removed by unbolting?
@Mikefngarage5 жыл бұрын
yea already looked at that wouldnt do anything if you tried to pry right there nothing to lever against that would help open the lock. Yea you could unbolt the whole thing that is why the lock covers that part. The main reason why I didnt buy the proven industries. My design covers those bolts. There is a pin that we will be spot welding as well. Still would be almost impossible to tow There isnt a slide in unit someone could just buy for that. Thanks for pointing that out.

Pretty nice fab Mike I’m not trying to be a jerk but I want to pour out that most of the puck locks are very easy to pick even the Master brands i bought a complete matching set for a enclosed car trailer that were keyed alike And found out about the picking after the fact sadly it was easier for a thief to cut thru the trailers hardware and get inside luckily i didn’t have Much of valu for them to steal as mostly all of thee normal items i kept in there were locked away in another location and i had to buy new trailer parts from a dealer to repair the damaged ones BTW i specifically bought a more expensive trailer thinking all those parts would be better and more secure than a less known brand and that was not true at all ? It sort of goes back to locks are used to keep the honest people fro, stealing your things thieves dont have any respect for your belongings and will do whatever it takes looking back at my situation I’m pretty sure i know who broke into mine as i had a neighbor that was doing Crack and tried to rob a taxi driver in the middle of the night only to get caught and put in jail at te time i didnt know of that guys drug problems but after his arrest his wife told us he ha been doing the drugs for some time and had been unemployed for quire a while apparently from his Fathers company as well
@Mikefngarage5 жыл бұрын

Wondering what these devices are trying to accomplish How about a thief with a hitch and ball on their vehicle just backing up to your trailer and wrapping their own chain around the trailer tongue and put a carabeener thru 2 links to secure the chain and driving off ? Why does a thief need to use the trailer's hitch at all ?

@Mikefngarage3 жыл бұрын
you would need a cut off wheel and a bit of time. portable saw would not touch it. would take too long most thieves will go to the next one. There is no perfect lock system. Most wheel locks you can drag it for a few feet and they break. But I use both.
