It's time, I've been wanting to build an under deck cover forever! With the new Teardrop Trailer project on the way, it's now a must! The crazy part is that I had a deal with a guy to do this 2.5yrs ago and he never came through so now I have to do it! Lucky my friend Paul stepped up and gave me a hand!

SHOW US HOW YOU WATERPROOFED THE JOIST ?? The best way to prevent rot is to ensure the wood never gets wet. This can most easily be done before the decking boards go down during construction. First, shield the tops of the joists and beams with waterproof flashing tape. There are commercial butyl tapes designed to be the right width for this purpose. With self-adhesive tape, the application is relatively easy. Additionally, by applying joist flashing tape before screwing in hardware, you can create a barrier between the fasteners and preservatives in the wood that lessens corrosion. Thus, flashing tape protects in two ways, reducing corrosion and waterproofing the top of the wood beams and joists.

Nice job on the build. This should last quite a while. Running the spacers continuously instead of placing them only where a screw is needed to secure the material might cause some difficulty later, as debris makes its way from the deck surface and tries to follow liquid flow out to the end of the deck.

Probably a vinyl but if cost wasn't an issue I would have hired a company to do it differently. They make deck boards that have a rubber wiper between the boards that will essentially do the same thing too. Those are cool! But I also enjoying trying to do something new and outside of my comfort zone :). Is this solution perfect? No, but it's worked for my purposes hehe.

So it looks like the metal lengths are attached perpendicularly to the wood strips, correct? Then how does the water get past the wood strips when it is traveling? Doesn't it just dam up where it meets wood?
@SouthernGinger

The water falls into the grooves and travels under the wood cross members. If the metal was flat then yes that would be an issue.

We bought a house with a virtually identical build (same metal siding, same mounting system). Unfortunately the leaves and organic debris will build up in the channels and at the wooden mounts, creating drips / leaks over time through the seams. IMHO you need a good inch of clearance between the metal siding and the attachment points to allow for proper run-off. Even after cleaning, in a heavily wooded area it will start leaking again within a year or two. Cheap, but not fool-proof. One suggestion is to caulk the seams between each piece, as that will help somewhat.

@@rafb145 Maybe the answer would be not running full joists across, but instead installing small maybe 2" sections every 10" or so as mounting surfaces for the paneling. Another option would be cutting arches into the joists. That would allow for drainage. Just a thought.

I was wondering what kind of gap you have between the deck boards. I end up with twigs, leaves, oak pollen, dirt, bat poop, and various other debris which ends up building up on the panels until it wont allow flow. Then, as others have mentioned, it starts leaking at the joints and screw holes, and is nearly impossible to clean out. I am currently looking for a way to drop the panels for cleaning without unscrewing hundreds of screws.
@SouthernGinger
@SouthernGinger 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I use a pressure washer to clean out the gaps :)
@1SCme
@1SCme 3 жыл бұрын
I also don't like the use of wood against the metal. In the simple side, I would suggest: 1. Unistrut for the cross supports to withstand the water collecting better than wood. 2. Install a header (2x12) at the high end that can be easily removed to give access to clean out the area with a hose. 3. Use stand offs where the panels are screwed in to allow room for the leaves, etc. to flow underneath - just a lot of precut blocks you hold between the sheet and cross support when you add each screw (same screw location, longer screws ran through the standoffs), add wood glue so the standoffs stay in placed if the sheets are removed later. If you wanted to go 1 more step, the metal panels are only connected to cross pieces, so can make a metal frame out of unistrut that is only held in place at a few points (corners and once every 5 ft to 10 ft?), allowing the entire section to be dropped as a single unit. Unistrut can be expensive, but come in 20 ft lengths, you can use just the smaller size (not a lot of weight), and they make brackets to connect them together. Order unistrut from a rep (not Home Depot) if cheaper, and get the cheapest version (probably low profile, unslotted).
@backflipsaresweet
@backflipsaresweet Жыл бұрын
@@1SCme not sure if you'll see this since it's been years, but could you explain the header a bit more? Also when you say standoffs, are you thinking small blocks stacked on each other and having one long screw go through the purlin and blocks?
@backflipsaresweet
@backflipsaresweet Жыл бұрын
@@1SCme also could I just run purlins the same way as the down slope so the channels don't get blocked?
@1SCme
@1SCme Жыл бұрын
@@backflipsaresweet Header was a poor choice of words. This is just a board (can be smaller than a 2x12, 2x8 would probably be fine) held flat against the deck joists by just a couple of screws to the deck joists that can be easily removed so you can access with a hose for cleaning. You want the metal sheathing to run in the same direction as the slope, otherwise leaves and dirt will collect at all the ridges in the sheathing, and water will leak through the seams between sheets. Purlins are only needed if you are running the sheathing parallel to the deck joists because the sheathing joints probably won't line up on the joists. If the joists are perpendicular to the sheathing, you don't need purlins, you can use stand off blocks, cut to different heights to create the slope and get the gap for water to flow under the joists. Your deck joists likely run perpendicular to your home wall. Depending on your deck dimensions and layout, there's nothing that says the slope has to be away from the house, you can run the slope to either side to have your sheathing perpendicular to your joists, doing away with the purlins, creating the slope with the stand offs noted above. From the top down in layers, you have the deck joists, the purlins, the block, then the metal sheathing. With more thought, I might pre-drill a hole for the screw to pass through in the stand offs, otherwise they will likely split when screwed into place. Pre-drilling would also make it easier to install. With or without drilling, 1 screw would go through the sheathing, stand off, and purlin (or joists if they are perpendicular to the sheathing and no purlins are used). For the slope, I would recommend a minimum of 1/8" per foot, this is pretty standard for garage floors, shower pans, concrete decks, etc. where you want the water to drain.

What about deck leaks during rain? Water logged ceiling with electrical conduits? Fail.
@SouthernGinger

The point is to capture the rain and allow it to run off. The electrical is exterior grade and fully waterproof for that reason

@@SouthernGinger Ok, but why have rain go through deck in the first place? This deck became the roof for the room below, the shed. All roofs must be waterproof, that is their function. I'm thinking that deck should be lined with waterproof barrier, and coated with vinyl, plywood, or any other waterproof material. Won't be as pretty as wood planks, but total seal against rain and moisture. This is what I was looking for in your video but did not find.

unless you have air coming in from both sides of those channels this is a really stupid idea - speaking from experience - i'll give you 2-3 years max until you'll start noticing constant moisture and accelerated rate of decaying
@RocisBigBroSavage
@RocisBigBroSavage 4 жыл бұрын
What was your experience? From what I've seen, all under decking products work exactly like this but use proprietary parts, which drives the cost up. Maybe look marginally a bit better, but barely. The only exception is Trex RainEscape which uses rubber(ish) membranes laid on top of joists, which obviously can only be installed when you don't have your decking on yet. But even that doesn't have very explicit air venting on both ends. Any venting across all of those products pretty much relies on gaps between decking boards.

This is 100% not the way to do this. I can guarantee and bet my life that these have come down by now because between the oak trees in the backyard, the squirrels, and rain/snow.... that deck is smelling like decay right about now. The pockets created by running the mounting boards perpendicular to the floor joists creates stops for all the debris that gets between the deck boards to basically be trapped forever. In the wintertime, it will freeze, soak, and fracture the pressure treated lumber used to build the deck.
