DIY Vellum Technique

This simple technique can transform ordinary printer paper into something that resembles commercially available vellum.
The translucent result is mysterious and slightly romantic...I like that.
Surprisingly, it's possible to add many more layers of media over the top of the finished DIY Vellum. And, as a bonus, it doesn't wrinkle and pucker when exposed to moisture, like commercial vellum can.
To avoid the oil leaching onto other surfaces, add a simple sealing coat with a mixture of watered down white glue.

I find that when I'm up against a situation like this, it can help to think in terms of categories of the types of products that are being used, rather than the specifics. Here's what I mean, Anita: if you don't have baby oil, what other type of oil might be lurking in your cupboards - olive oil? If you don't have Distress Inks, why not experiment with other translucent media like watercolors? If you don't have stamps, why not find pretty designs you can print on your paper first, then treat it with oils? There are often solutions that make it possible to attempt something similar. If you do, make sure to add a clear sealer over both sides of the paper once complete to prevent oil from transferring to adjacent surfaces. A layer of white glue thinned with water will do the trick. xoxo

I am not sure if I missed how do you keep the oil from bleeding onto other items?
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian...if you adhere the DIY Vellum to an existing page with PVA, that will prevent the oils from affecting pages on the other side. This is how these pages were used, and no oil has penetrated to adjacent pages. A light coat of watered down PVA over the surface will take care of it, as well, if you intend to use the paper without gluing it down.

I tried this technique but find the oil keeps leaking through. I wiped the excess oil off, layered it in-between Bounty paper towel for days and still the oil seeps through to the paper above and below it. Do I have to seal it with a medium? Thanks for the tutorial.
@Thicketworks

Hi Sharon! Uh oh! I'm so sorry that happened. Thank you for letting me know. I hope this comment will help anyone else who may have experienced this problem. I didn't realize this would happen (I should have guessed, though!). Since my sheets are glued to the existing sketchbook pages, I've never had any seeping...SO, my first suggestion would be to add a simple sealing coat with a mixture of watered down white glue. That's how I glued these pages down, and nothing has bled through, so I'm assuming it must be because of the adhesive. Fingers crossed that this will solve the issue, my friend! xox

I know that there are many, many tutorials on how to make wine glass lampshades out of vellum. Could this technique be use to create such a thing?
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 5 жыл бұрын
I suppose it's possible, @jimbobaroobud - my only concern would be that since this is literally soaked with oil, it might not be safe to have it close to an open flame, my friend. I'd probably opt for commercial vellum if you plan to use traditional tea lights, just to be cautious. Of course, you plan to use LED tea lights - this ought to work well for that. xoxo

How did you keep the oil from bleeding out? When I laid the pieces between papers with weight like it would have in a journal it bleed out. Do you seal it with something?
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 5 жыл бұрын
I apologize for not making it more clear, my friend. When placing these pages in the journal, a thin layer of PVA was used to adhere them. This blocks the 'leaching' that might otherwise occur.

Hi Jackie! You didn't do anything wrong, my friend. Just give 'em another wipe down (you can even use a baby wipe if you have one - or a bit of rubbing alcohol), and keep working. Hi Terry! Firstly, thank you SO much for subscribing - that means the world to me, my friend. I have had some feedback that the oil can leach onto adjacent pages...something I hadn't experienced, because I typically use 2 page spreads, that are glued onto the existing pages. If your pages are going to contact other pages that AREN'T treated with oil, you may want to apply a thin coat of watered down PVA glue, or a spray sealer to stop the leaching. xox

How did that inkjet print not blead all over the place.... Did you set the ink somehow?
@Thicketworks
@Thicketworks 7 жыл бұрын
Hey, nixiadel! Nope - the inkjet ink isn't reactive to oil. Now, water would have made it run like bad mascara, but oil: no problem. xox

Heather Tracy thanks. I do tiny books and learned the hard way to use lazer printer if I don't want smears.

I totally adore my laser printer. But, it's so cool when you CAN use the inkjet and get crisp results, too. BTW - tiny books?? Fabulous, nixiadel. xox

Heather Tracy Heather, about printers and different mediums. If I buy a inkjet printer I’ll have to avoid all water based products? Bummer, I almost ordered one earlier thinking it’d be safe! Realize now I was remembering my old dot matrix printer. I miss that old thing for the many fonts I could print with and then use watercolors, acrylic washes, etc. I’m not sure I can afford a laser printer right now. I’m facing having to move as difficult as that will be. Glad I rewatched this video for about the fifth time and this time read some comments! ❤️💗💜 It’s a favorite of mine.

Never give up, Katerina! Talk to someone at a Hardware Store that has a plumbing department...they should be able to help you find Latex Caulk. Thanks for your kind words, my friend. I am in love with the process of discovering cool techniques and sharing them! xox

No of course not!!! :) It's just that where I live in there aren't any big hardware stores and it also seems the silicone is mostly prefered to be used as a sealer. But to tell you the truth I searched online and I found some sealers-caulks that I am not familiar with their technical terms, so I do have to visit here and try to figure it out. Thank you for your help, my dear friend!!
