Very impressive ,how you use the basic technique to improve on your original designs , including your generator carriage to move to the out of round drive wheel , Top marks in my opinion and the education you have learned is beyond text books. Keep Strong and vertical.

What sort of power does it produce? And do you need to stop it in high winds?

Very cool project 👍 I don't think the increased surface area impacts the performance, since the pressure due to the folds results in a force along the "wing" and not tangential to the axis. That being said: should not hurt either and can probably help the stability in strong winds.

So it's been a little while and it turns out that the increased surface area makes a huge difference. Also the edges of the corrugation gives a slight ugrinsky effect further improving the performance. If your going to make a vawt for yourself then this blade setup is a good starting point. 👍

Would like an explanation of why icegoggles thinks that all of the surface area of the corrugation is contributing to a turning force.. It seems two of the ribbed walls are normal to the axis, so the force of them are not adding to rotational force. Possibly the ribbing helps with spill.

Yeah I don't buy that the increased surface area helps, because the only surface area that matters is that which is normal to the direction of the wind. The ribbing will be perpendicular to it unless the window is traveling up/down. However maybe it helps reduce friction and therefore increases the air bouncing out of the curve?

hi, i'm contemplating structural design right now of a turbine with (I think) four airfoils basically. But maybe this type of savonioide centre to combine it with and basically stick the blades to might do a good combo. Impressive doubling of surface area, neat trick to get there #noted

4 minutes in.. idea To cut the pipe in half with a piano hing holding the sides together. With rope/chain/springs bringing size to grab force. Maybe??

Nice simple design. I do like the idea of having the motor on the outside of the lower wheel, as its got more or a circumference from the motion of the spin. Have you connected this up to a battery etc? That would also be good to show, in another video maybe?

There is something going on here that nobody has mentioned either in the video or the comments. Due to the conical nature of the turbine as a whole, the wind in the concave side of the blade will flow from top to bottom due to centrifugal force. If you consider this direction of air flow, then the corrugated inner surface does have a much larger area. This would account for the improved performance.

Part of the nature of these VAWTs is the lever length. The conical nature is pretty much degradation of the potential. He should have used perpendicular mounts.

This design intentionally does NOT use perpendicular mounts as it would require weight balancing of the upper section. The conical shape allows for far better stability during high speed rotation.

Drag types tend to be easier to build but low efficiency versus lift type vertical axis wind turbines, VAWTs. An example of a high efficiency lift type VAWT is the design at Wind Harvest International, USA. They make the best VAWT on the planet.

this is quite clever. I wandering what if you put the blade in the opposite direction , i mean wider in the upper part, with the wind triyng to lift it as a a plane wing and pushing upwards, maybe more velocity and torque. Thanks for sharing

Many people seem confused by the description of the surface area of this blade. I believe he is referring to the actual surface of the corrugated material as a reacting surface not the area of the air blowing on the turbine which is energy available. So it is possible that the corrugated surface may extract more power from the available area of wind capture.

2:20 I’m not sure I agree that the corrugation actually increases the area with respect to power generation. The same area of wind will hit it regardless of corrugation, that wind area is where the power comes from. The corrugation certainly increases strength, as the second moment of inertia is greater, resisting flexing and buckling. Like how they’d make walls curvy in medical times, or how we currently design things like I-beams. Very cool project. Thanks for sharing

It's very simple, the corrugations reduce upward and downward movement of the air as it hits the back of the blades instead forcing it sideways through the channels of corrugation instead of the air dispersing in a circular pattern. This results in more driving force being achieved from the available wind. A simple way to think of it is, take a piece of paper, draw a straight line from one edge to the other, then draw a wavy line from one edge to the other. Which line is longer? Increasing surface area through this basic principle has been used for centuries. That's why Phillips screwdrivers perform better than flat, why driveshafts have splines and why off road tyres have big nobbly tread on them.

Interesting to see the topic of *corrugation* being brought up so much in the comments. Why aren't wind sails on sailboats corrugated if that also isn't using the principle of lift? When you give them, I've read through your explanations in the other comments. One reason given is that it channels the flow of the air, but that air would get directed in the same curved path whether corrugated or not. Therefore the forces at which the angle of the wind is hitting are not augmented. Remember it's not just getting hit by the wind, it's at what angle. The wind that hits the walls of the raised ridges is going to be ricocheted off at such a slight angle like a bullet on a tank, providing no extra ooomf, just a small loss in the sideways direction. The surface area one also doesn't seem sensible, if taken further. As some have said, you can't increase the surface area of the wind hitting the device. That's just a flat geometric shape cut out from the air. More so, if surface area was a benefit why not put in much more? You could increase the number of wrinkles and folds like the crevices of the brain, or microvilli in the intestines, or fins on a metal heat diffuser. Just imagine, would the result be a super turbo fast turbine, or a heavy lump? Speaking of heavy lump, the fact that you haven't shown this turbine IN ACTION yet, and are forced to move it using a jet of water instead of the actual wind itself, makes me think it reasonable for us all to expect that _until you can prove to us otherwise_ with a demonstration (Which the whole community would be glad to see, so we could all improve the efficiency of turbines) why the whole world is wrong and you're correct, perhaps you'd be better served by evaluating your unsubstantiated claims. Proof sir! You must give proof (I'd suggest two side by side, one corrugated, one not). Until then, it's unbecoming of you to act offended when called out for your... bologna. So far it's you alone against the entire world on this (Since no one else does it this way on purpose that we know of), so if you want us to take your future videos seriously, either lose the indignant sort of, "I'm right everyone's wrong" attitude in the comments or else PROVE IT.

You sure put a lot of time into that one. Let me address some of your key points, your 1st error is perhaps in your perspective, this is not a lift type turbine it's a drag type as are sails on a boat they operate on drag not lift. So principles and behavioural characteristics that apply to lift type designs won't apply here. The fundamental principle of drag type is to catch as much of the available "pushing" force from the wind as opposed to lift type which operates on a pressure difference between blade surfaces. With drag it's ideal if a larger catchment surface can be created without increasing overall size of the blades which is what corrugation provides. Re: my attitude, is born out of frustration at this exact type of thing. For centuries man has used ridges, splines, Phillips design, torx design etc, all to increase the surface contact area for an application. It's fairly simple as I see it but it seems that most fundamental of understanding is lost on folks who seem to think that this turbine operates on lift principles and hit me up in the comments claiming I'm some sort of fraud simply because this creation doesn't fit their understanding, knowledge base or terms of reference. Power output, as the generator is a seperate device, theoretically this design can produce whatever the attached generator is capable of. In this case it's driving a not very good ebay generator claimed to capable of 600w @24v when the best I've ever seen from it is between 2 and 300w max. With all that said, the current situation is that I haven't bothered to repair this creation since storm force 10 winds ripped 3 blades off after 45mins of high speed performance. Long story short I will be rebuilding a tougher version with gauges and would like to get a better generator also but it's not in the budget this side of Christmas. I did do basic smoke tests on the blades to help visualise the airflow behaviour on the corrugations and the results were interesting to say the least. I hope this addresses your questions , thank you for taking the time to write the comment without the snarkyness. When it comes to comments, if I get attitude, I will respond with attitude. Hope this covers everything, as a suggestion i would recommend looking into the various methods used in different technologies to take better advantage of the coefficient of friction by increasing contact area. Another good example of this is an engineer named graham flowers who designed a drag type HAWT using corrugated blades. It works extremely well and you may find very interesting.

Hi loved your creativity... Corrugated looks good and if you are like the IOM then the wind won't be a issue ! Just stripped my Chinese lantern as no matter what I was getting 2 - 4 watt at 2-4.5 volt ( not good) found the three phase cables had been pushed into the coils inside the insulation wrapping, no solder or connections the wire fell out as soon as I opened the casing carefully due to seal..... Do yo know what wattage you get from a working VAWT I think this is a 400 w 12 v. Many thanks for your video.

Hi Dan, not sure if you have a similar generator to the one on the vawt but ours originally made around 200watts. It's a bit the worse for wear now 2+ years later so probably below that output. One way you can test yours is with an amp meter. Connect the generator to a controller, rectifier or even an AC load of some sort and see what amperage you get. Then multiply amps by the volts to find the Watts.

Awesome video, thinking of doing a similiar DIY project. Had a Couple questions: 1. How much power is this generating a day? I know it's wind but on average what are you able to generate 2. Could you scale it up by adding another motor on each corner?

Hello Cole and thank you. Currently it's generating nothing as it was damaged in a force 10 storm a while back. The best we saw out of it was 200w approx, this is due to the poor quality generator (ebay). I'm on the hunt for a better generator at a good price before rebuilding it with some improvements in durability. This could definately be scaled up to run multiple generators if required. One thing to note is that it's a low rpm turbine so the turn ratio between turbine and generator is important to ensure that the generator turns fast enough. That ratio in this case is 30:1.

We use the turbine combined a solar array to charge a battery bank which we use to power some household items.

*All practical tests of ground-based small wind turbines show: 1) They hardly produce any electricity! 2) They do not last long!* *With solar panels you can generate at least 10 times more green electricity with the same investment & time expenditure!* Reliable and almost maintenance-free for at least 25 years! On the other hand, 9 out of 10 small wind turbines stop working after just a few years due to the extremely gusty winds close to ground.

Honestly can't answer that question as the turbine was destroyed in a gale force 10 wind a few months after it's construction. Material costs were roughly 400 euro including the generator which was €250

@@michaeljames5936 funny enough It put out just over 200w a few moments before it went kaput. When it comes to small scale wind, we've learned from our setup of solar combined with an istabreeze HAWT that wind is a good complimentary source of power for when the weather is poor or at night time. To have a more reliable off grid system, more than one source is required unfortunately. A combo of wind, solar and a petrol/diesel generator seems to be the setup that works best to ensure power is available in all conditions. If you're thinking of building a system yourself I'd suggest starting with solar, then a generator and finally add the wind turbine.

I think you have just added weight not a increase in surface area the wind can use. If this worked then just make plane wings zigzagged this way you have the same amount of material and weight but in a shorter package… if the pipe is a bigger diameter this will increase the amount of air captured but now your pipe has bits missing all up the sides so it’s less effective then if you just brought the same size pipe but straight pipe? Just look at the silhouette of the objects and not the finish.

Not enough ratio between the wheel and generator, thats why the generator runs on the outer frame.

You can pick but you may not find much 😁 only joking. There is 7 blades in total. What makes them fragile is simply the upcycled materials used for construction. With better materials such as aluminium I believe the design would have survived the force 10 storm that damaged it.
