Awesome project. Maybe you could create the linear actuator, like a rail gun. Each corner has a rail with magnets and it passes the projection screen up and down, from one coil to the next. Might give you more depth.

Great insight on removing the color wheel for increased frame rate!
@robb233
@robb233 Жыл бұрын
so why did you need to keep the color wheel at all, if its no longer used?
@makermac70
@makermac70 Жыл бұрын
The color wheel cannot be removed completely because the projector would not work anymore. The electronics will refuse to operate the projector if it can't detect the signal it expects from the wheel sensor.

This is awesome work. The way you achieve is the same as Voxon photonics?

Thank you for the nice comment. Unfortunately, I don't know exactly how their devices work because I've never seen one of them and you can't really get a clear idea of the principle in the published videos.

looks great. why not more height for leia?I like the soft falloff at the screen edge touch
@makermac70
@makermac70 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. I would have loved to show the leia scene ...., but the reduced height is the limit for this DIY version. More vertical projection area means more drive or less air friction. But at the same time you need a much faster projector to cover more vertical planes.

How exactly did you clean the DMD? I did see a Q-tip but I guess that would make more a mess the good?
@makermac70
@makermac70 Жыл бұрын
I followed the official TI cleaning instructions for DMD glass: "The least aggressive cleaning method is to use forced Ionized Air. A more aggressive cleaning method is wet cleaning. This method uses liquids such as isopropyl alcohol with DI water." So I used Q-tips to apply some isopropyl alcohol and a microfiber optical cleaning cloth. Worked great for me.

Congratulations! What do you think about creating a larger projection surface, and placing it inside a vacuum glass dome so that the movement does not suffer from air resistance?
@makermac70
@makermac70 10 ай бұрын
Thanks for the suggestion, I am a bit afraid that a closed vacuum chamber would increase the complexity, but others have made similar suggestions, so I might consider it for a next version. But the main prerequisite for a larger volume would be to find a faster projector (>1000 fps).

Why wouldn't a six color projector work?
@makermac70
@makermac70 11 ай бұрын
Great question! The reason why a projector with a non-"RGB color wheel" would not work is because we want to use the RGB color subframes as individual monochrome frames. A 24-bit RGB input bitmap from a PC can be seen as a combination of 3 images (individual R,G,B color planes, 8-bit each). These 3 subframes are always displayed in sequence and correspond to 3 distinct images on our moving plane. However a projector with a 6 color-wheel such as RGBCMY, RGBCWY would somehow remix these input colors (yellow=green+red; magenta=blue+red etc) and the resulting frames are no longer controllable.

@@makermac70 That makes a lot sense. Do you think it would be possible to do this with a 6 color configuration? I got an old dell 1510x laying around and was thinking of trying this but if it's too crazy i'll try looking for another projector. Thanks!
