Nice, Brandon. Quick tip, McMaster-Carr part number 6628K324 is an undersized 1144 steel 5/8" rod. A foot of it is just under $7. That and a pack of 5/8 ID washers welded on top of the cut pieces and you have your mounting stubs for about $0.75 each.

To keep the slope and finger gap, offsetting the cut using a straight edge (or the speed square) pivoted around the fixed jaw's point of contact might have allowed you to maintain more of the adjustability range and bottom out at when the clamp is set at it's tightest rather than before. At 9:35, it kinda looks like the slope that was cut resulted in the jaw bottoming out prematurely and thus reducing maximum opening.
@BrandonLund3 жыл бұрын
I fiddled with it and ground a little off the end where it pivots. They probably should have done that from the factory.

You mentioned a respirator, but then don't have one on. I'm curious how big of a deal it is to weld that galvanized metal on the clamps without a respirator? How much zinc coated material do you need to be welding before it's a danger?
@BrandonLund3 жыл бұрын
@Aaron the Amateur any amount of Zinc in your respiratory system is bad for you. You need to ensure proper ventilation and remove the zinc when possible....but so is cigarette smoking and McDonald's so it's all a gamble
@aarontheamateur3 жыл бұрын
@@BrandonLund I didn’t mean that to sound like criticism. I have been told that welding anything galvanized will make me sicker than a dog, and so I’ve been very hesitant to do a couple projects. I have a vinyl fence gate that has galvanized supports inside that were broken during a wind storm for example. I am scared to weld it back up because I don’t really know how dangerous it is. I have a respirator that is a P100 but I can still smell things occasionally when I weld with it, so I’m not sure if it’s protecting me correctly or not. I was in the military and if you smelled anything while your gas mask was on, then it wasn’t working properly. Obviously different, but I’m not sure how to make sure my respirator is doing its job, or even if it is appropriate for running a couple beads on the galvanized square tubing for that gate. Maybe it isn’t enough to worry about, I don’t know.

@Aaron the Amateur none taken man. I've gotten really sick many years ago from welding galvanized. I wouldn't risk welding galvanized unless you remove the coating or have good ventilation. Even a little bit is not good for you but as i mentioned before it's a crap shoot. Some folks weld their entire career taking little precautions smoking 3 packs a day with no issues while others can take precautions and become sick. A 2091 or a 2097 respirator cartridge is good for grinding off the coating and welding it back together. If you remove the coating and have good ventilation you can probably get away without a mask but it's a good idea to wear one. You won't get sick getting a little whiff for a couple minutes but I don't know where that line is from being ok to being sick.
