If you replace a panel after 2020, the NEC requires a SPD to be included. The building inspector would not have accepted your panel upgrade without one included.

@@edwardmeigs9755 I think my local county was following 2017 NEC or older rules in back 2021 at the time my panel was upgraded. I think my county is now adhering to newer NEC rules as my neighbor just had their panel upgraded and a surge protector was required.

I have a main panelboard which includes the meter and the main disconnect for 200 amps. This box has room for only 8 breakers but also has pass-thru lugs at the bottom of the box. These pass-thru lugs carry power (200 amps) to a subpanel. The main panelboard as well as the subpanel are Square D. Do I install the whole house surge protector in the main panelboard or the subpanel or both. Please advise.

@spuddy_bud, if you have the space in the meter/main panel shut off combo, you can install it there and it will protect your load side(everything in your house) Just do not play around with anything above the feed lines that go to your house, that is the load side of the panel and you probably do not have access to it without breaking a seal. Don't break the seal, most companies and municipalities have heavy fines for cutting an electric company seal.

I've got a homeline panel where the main breaker is at the bottom instead of the top. Does that mean I should install this on the lowest slots of the panel?

Yes the SPD is the first breaker from the main

you can mount it anywhere on the panel. surges follow the path of least resistance.

you need a ground bar in that panel and take the green w ire put it on the ground bar that you install., grounds and neutrals should only be on the same bar at the meter/main If you do not have a neutral bar on the side for this surge protector to clamp on to, get the type of surge protector that fits in one of the k/os in the panel.

This is my main panel not a sub panel. This is the 1st and only disconnect for the entire house.
