The Carpenter's Daughter - Vikkie Lee

I've wanted to make some flower window boxes with wooden angle brackets for a few weeks now.
I was quite nervous about getting the structure right overall, because I wanted something that lasted. So, this week, I decided to drive to pay a visit to my Dad's woodyard in Doncaster for a day of learning.
I fell in love with some planters in this style that had been made for a customer. But I honestly thought they'd be too heavy to work and my Dad assured me they'd be fine. And guess what? THEY ARE! :)
So here's the things I used to make it:
As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases made through links.
Pressure treated timber - roughly 30mm x 37mm thickness
Dad's nail gun
Multico cross cut saw
Bosch Combi Drill: geni.us/Ov6zC [Amazon]
6mm masonry drill bit from www.toolstation.com/shop/p276...
Spax screws *I used gold: geni.us/C80wo [Amazon]
Wood drill bits (roughly a 3 or 4mm for pilot holes): geni.us/beq5u [Amazon]
Torx screwdriver bit to attach the Spax screws: geni.us/K4aN [Amazon]
Ronseal Clear Wood Preserve (I used a mucky brush by mistake): geni.us/J2jYas [Amazon]
Spirit level: geni.us/DIkVPjB [Amazon]
Dickies Fogbuster Goggles (*GIFTED) geni.us/zHXksA1 [Amazon]
Dickies Overalls/Boilersuit (*GIFTED) geni.us/B6F95k [Amazon]
Dickies Safety Boots (*GIFTED) geni.us/X67B [Amazon]

How lucky you are you still have your dad and get to spend time learning and working along side of him Vikkie. Those boxes are not cheap to buy I know that for sure. A great job done by you both! They turned out really beautiful too!! Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Becky. I know it sounds morbid, but I knew I'd regret it if I didn't go down to his yard and ask for lessons at some point. I wish I had taken an interest sooner, but I suppose I wasn't ready. And tell me about it... the prices of these to buy were surprising!

Well done. Looks great. My only advice would be around 3:45. The drill wobbles like that as the drill bit isn't lined up in the chuck. With pressure it could snap. Easy fix, take it out line up and tighten. 😊

Yet another terrific job well and truly jobbed, then. And on behalf of fathers everywhere I'd just like to add that few things make a fella happier or more pleased than when their daughters do as you do - which is to get stuck in there and learn that they are just as capable of doing outstanding work as our sons. Your dad has just got to be well chuffed with you! I would be :o)
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks 😊 I'm sure he is, but being Yorkshire folk, we don't talk about stuff like that 😂 (unless that's just us lol). Growing up, it my was my older brother who had to go down the yard to help at weekends for his pocket money. But he's not interested in DIY at all, so I completely agree girls are just as capable 😁
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK

Sorry, I forgot to say - he might have been gutted when he realised his son didn't want to take over the yard. The business has been owned by two generations in our family. There's still hope yet haha!

A very clever design. Personally I would leave an air gap, 6mm, between the wall and the box. That should allow the timber to dry evenly and prevent water, and wood preservative, staining the walls when it rains. Time to buy yourself an sds drill, they are so more efficient than cordless drills. No one forgets the first time they shoot themselves with a nail gun:()
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip 😀 love the gap idea 😊

And definitely want to get an SDS drill. We used to have a hammer drill, but it broke and really miss it! Also, the nail gun scares the bejesus out of me for that very reason!
@trig
@trig 6 жыл бұрын
The Carpenter's Daughter Top tip pull the nail out instantly. You are going to have to use your teeth because the nail head will be tight against the skin. First bite the pointy end and push the nail back into the skin. That should leave enough room for your teeth between the head and skin. Think of your happy place and pull. It won't bleed much but the swelling will make the wound throb. I don't know what happens when it hits a one. I don't want to find out either. 😥

The Carpenter's Daughter DIY first aide maybe a good topic to cover. PPE is all good and well but few people have a plan incase of and emergency. I work on my own a lot and know I may well cut of a digit one day. I carry a sterile bottle of water , chemical ice packs and powdered coagulant in my pack at all times.
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK

Thanks for all your advice! It's all enough to turn my stomach 😖, which is another reason I work extremely slowly at my own pace. I keep thinking about how I may have to take over the woodyard one day, and if that happens, I've definitely decided I'll be hiring a Healthy and Safety consultant.
