DIY Wood Burning Projects | Thrift Store Finds by Pyrocrafters - EP 2

I’m working on a new series of Thrift Store finds where I take an old piece of wood and repurpose it into a new art piece. I found this old rolling pin in a thrift store for $4 and I’m going to wood burn a pattern into it using a Walnut Hollow Versa Tool and then hang it up in my kitchen.

Great technique and you have amazing skill for such a cheap tool! You should invest in a nice burner and pens. It was the best investment in burning I've ever made. Don't have to wait for tips to cool and heating is almost instant. (For your algo I was searching wood burning ideas that sell)

I might suggest when you use the straight edge with the pen, I would turn the pen 180 degrees so that you are only using the point of it, not the whole edge.

I had to take a break from using a versa tool. It kept falling off of my craft table at the market, and breaking tips off inside, where I couldn't extract it. But it worked nice and fast.

Question for you. The butcher block conditioner. Do you recommend using that for pieces that will be outside? Also can you do that then put a finish on the board after?

Hey Karen! I don’t recommend butcher block for stuff outside. It won’t last against the outdoor elements. I’ve never tried it, so I’m not sure what would happen long term, but there are some better options for outdoors like Spar Urethane. And I’m not sure about mixing it with anything. I know there are some varnished that can be layered with one another, but over never heard of using butcher block that way. Maybe test it out on a scrap and see what the reaction is. You never know how those types of things are going to mix until you test it.

Jessica Land I have an exhaust fan now. It’s in my ceiling and there’s a tube that runs down to my desk. It pulls the smoke away from me and out of the shop. Before that, I used a small desk fan and another fan in the window to pull it out of the shop. :)

Can you "use" the rolling pin after the butcher block oil dries?

You can. It will absorb in. If there’s excess, I just use a clean cloth, wipe away the excess and let it sit for a while longer until it is dry to the touch. And you can reapply again in the future if it starts to dry out. I have a cutting board that needs reapplication about once a year or so.

What stylus are you using for outlining

Hey Susie! I just use a mechanical pencil. I like to see where I've outlined already; and the metal stylus kind of gives me the willies. I don't like the way the metal feels on paper. It's like nails on a chalkboard for me. But there are a lot of people that use it just fine. If you search for a metal stylus on amazon, it will pop up. amzn.to/3vD7Nr8

Yes! It's a food grade conditioner that people use on cutting boards, so I used it here on the rolling pin. We don't use it on food, but we could. Thanks for watching.
