As a long-time guitar player, I can tell you the tone-wood argument has been going on since dirt was new. I don’t know if it would make any difference at all, but using hard woods like maple or ironwood might give the reflection a bit more high-end clarity. Again, I don’t know. For all I know, cardboard would work as well. But the prospect of using hardwoods certainly opens up some design features and decorative options that pine just doesn’t have. There’s a kid building what look like pretty well engineered sound boxes out of nothing but hard wood with angled reflectors inside. Back in the 80s, I knew a guy that engineered custom speaker cabinets (before they got swallowed up by Bose and those tiny invisible big sound producing boxes made the custom cabinets little more than big clutter) and his whole thing was reflecting and guiding the right sound from the right hole. Don’t ask me how that all works because all I did was design his business cards. But it sure turned out cool when he was done. Might be something worth playing with if you’re so inclined. 😎

I’m no master carpenter and I don’t know what those guys are doing, but I think this is a cool idea. I learned some stuff and enjoyed doing so. Isn’t that about the best part of the whole thing? Now, I’ll go try to make me one. Wish me luck! Like following gourmet recipes, I don’t have much of it. If the recipe says I’ll end up with Steak au Poivre, how come mine looks just like mama’s meatloaf? Yeah, like that. Thanks for sharing. I’m subscribed!

Nice concept, the execution could be better: tighter fitting phone aperture; but, crucially all the internal surfaces should be curved/rounded. Way too much signal lost through reflection off all those flat surfaces inside. Sound waves travel best like water waves, curves and bends, no right angles, otherwise, a sound (pun very much intended) project.

The front and back are 12.00 in long X 5.5 in wide. The stand-off pieces are 3/4 square.

It’s too bad you didn’t clean up the back board before closing it up. Seeing the sticker and pencil lines kind of ruins it. Also, those Brad nails on the front make it look awful. Really need more patience when woodworking.

$9 PC speakers will sound *much* better but if you're looking to burn time working with wood, OK?
