Screen printing with vinyl is best used when you have multiple shirts to make at the same time. Once you set up the Speedball screen with the craft vinyl, all you have to do is line up the vinyl design on each shirt, apply Speedball water-based ink, and remove the screen to begin the process again with the next shirt.

Great video, thank you. Screen printing is by far the best feeling product, but I think its only really suited to runs of 10 or more to justify the setup time. HTV is actually pretty good for smaller designs or ones with more "whitespace" - its the large, flat designs that feel the worst.
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 2 жыл бұрын
I agree completely!! I talk about this in my HTV vs screen printing tutorial too. I completely agree with the larger designs as well. I don’t mind HTV but I don’t love the feeling of a giant cut of HTV on my shirt.

If you are using water base ink.you can add a bit of water every 2 or 3 shirts with your method to the ink container just a sprinkle (and use the spoon to mixed well)then keep applying it to the screen.that way keeps your ink from drying and you'll noticed every time the refreshed ink with the water will clear the ink left over in your screen as well!Also you can let the print dried on the sun before iron it.for a better outcome!

This is amazing! Thank you so much! I just ordered my cricut and have been searching all over to try and find an "easier" way to make multiple shirts at once rather than having to cut and press so many HTV for each shirt. I'm so excited to try this now! Does the ink last ? Or start to fade after a while? Out of curiosity..do you like screen printing better than heat pressing the vinyl on?
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 4 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! Yes this is much easier for bulk amounts of shirts! I have had fanstastic longevity out of the ink so far. I would say it lsts just as long as HTV. I like both processes, so I use HTV for shirts when I have 5 or less and screen printing when I have more than that :)

Hi, would love to try this out. Some questions: 1. When your heat pressing the shirts, do you cover the shirt with like parchment paper before putting the heat press on the shirt? 2. What are the care instructions for a screen printed shirt? How long do they last?
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 3 жыл бұрын
You don't need to cover with parchment paper to press if the ink is dry. There aren't any specific care instructions that I'm aware of. The ink does better if you hang them to dry, but it's not required.

Wow thank you this is extremely helpful! I have an order of 12 shirts of the same design (2 color design) so I am hoping to try screen printing for the first time. If I make a screen of the 1st color, can I reuse it 12 times right in a row? Then clean it off, load the 2nd color screen and do the same? Your videos are great- thanks!
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 3 жыл бұрын
I’m so glad it was helpful! In theory, yes, you could do 12. Since it’s your first try, you may find that the ink starts to dry up a little bit before you can finish it. You may want to have a spray bottle with water handy to lightly spritz the screen in case it feels like it’s getting dry. But otherwise yes, the process you described is correct! Just let the first layer dry a bit before doing any more.

Great video!! Because each shirt size usually has a different size logo do you have to make a new one for each different size of shirt?? Or if it’s a large and XL is it close enough that you just use the same one?

I don't resize my logos dramatically if the sizing is close. I would keep it simple so you don't have to make a ton of screens :).

Any tips for someone using an iron to heat set? I can’t afford the fancy heat press
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 4 жыл бұрын
The iron works just fine! Set it on high with no steam. Move the iron in small circles over each area of the design for about 30 seconds. Make sure the ink is completely dry. I think it's also a good idea to have parchment paper over top of the ink just in case it's not fully dry, but that's not required.

Do you place anything on the inside of the shirts before doing the ink so it doesnt go thru to the back side of the shirt?
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 4 жыл бұрын
I typically don't put anything in between my shirts, but you can use parchment paper in between if you'd like.

Great Great Video...Can I use Excaliber Ink which is a plastisol ink instead of water based ink? I guess its what the big screen printing companies use as their inks?
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, plastisol ink is what big screen printing companies are using and it's a completely different process.

Hi. What transfer tape did you use for this? Thanks
@DIYAlex

I use clear medium tack transfer tape from 651Vinyl.com! It's been my favorite for screen printing so far.

I like this because sometimes with the htv on soft cotton makes the shirt look weird. Where do I get the screen box and can I buy the paint at Walmart?

You can get everything on Amazon! I'm not sure if Walmart sells screen printing products or not. You can find everything I use in my Amazon store! www.amazon.com/shop/diyalex

Thanks for the video. I have a question... how did you get that little bit of extra ink off the shirt?? I know you have to do it before it dries, but how?? Just water and a sponge???

I use soap and water on a wash cloth to remove it. Then I just spot clean the area.

You can use a wash cloth with water and hand or dish soap and just dab at it like any stain. Get the ink off while it's still wet and it's pretty easy!

Is there a trick to preparing your screen prior to adding the vinyl and ink. I use Speedball ink as well and wanted to make a couple of shirts. They were both ready and I had a helper so I feel like I was pretty quick. The ink seemed to dry in the mesh and the second transfer was not to good. Any advice would be appreciated.
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 2 жыл бұрын
You can keep a spray bottle handy with just water in it to help the ink stay wet. It’s water-based so it’s fine to use a little bit of water on it!

Hi! Great video. You didn’t talk about putting anything inside the shirt so the ink doesn’t bleed through to the back - do you use anything?

What if you want to do multiple shirts but in different colors but same design? Would you need recut the vinyl doing the whole process over again or can you just wash the screen leaving the vinyl on it, wait for it to dry and use a different color ink?
@DIYAlex
@DIYAlex 3 жыл бұрын
You would likely lose some pieces when washing the screen, so I wouldn't recommend it.

@DIYAlex

If you’re asking about the direction of the squeegee, I don’t believe so. I think it’s easier to keep straight and maintain even pressure, but it’s probably more personal preference than anything.

When you've already done one shirt and you set up the second, can any ink from the first shirt end up on the second? Such as an unwanted smudge if you have to adjust your placement?

This tutorial was wonderful! I wanted to ask what is the best way to let shirts dry? Do you have to keep them down on a flat surface or can you pick them up and hang them on a clothes line or something of the sort? Thank you for sharing your knowledge and making this new adventure a little less scary :)
