True story, I had a vanity in our bedroom that had clothes folded waiting to be put away. The vanity faced the west side of our home. There was also 2 full size glass doors which allowed the sun to shine on the vanity mirror. It was later in day about 6 or 7 pm when I went into our bedroom which was smoky. The smoke was heaviest over the vanity. I quickly started pulling the clothing away from the mirror and found a small smoldering burning hole in a cotton blouse. The sun reflection must have hit the mirror and made a hotter reflection onto the clothing. I was stunned and would never have believed if I hadn't seen it myself! You may want to make sure your mirror is facing shade or north. Jeff is right!

It really shouldn't work like that unless something creates a lensing effect, like a magnifying glass, or even eye glasses, which concentrates the light into a point--otherwise why would it be different than sunlight just coming in the window? But I'm guessing that mirrors are usually not perfectly flat, so maybe what can happen is that those imperfections can act like a lens and focus the light into a spot. Definitely better safe than sorry!

Maybe you can "disarm" the mirror by painting a patina over it? I know that people in the south of France and in Spain (used to) lime wash the windows of their greenhouses for the hot summer months to keep plants from burning or getting too hot.

Recent news story here in Australia: farming family went out for a day on the Easter weekend, having moved a glass vase of flowers onto an outdoor dining table on their patio. As someone who has been gardening for over 10 years, it makes me so happy to see people try gardening for the first time. For someone who is new to gardening, I think you are doing an amazing job. From that gorgeous, reclaimed greenhouse (I think painting it was an amazing decision by the way) to the quality, handmade raised beds, I think you are off to an amazing start. I also love your perennial choices. Catmint, Salvia, Phlox, and Dianthus are amazing, hardy perennials for the garden and are perfect for creating that cottage look. In addition to coming back every year, they flower their heads off and are easy to divide after they are established. Some other hardy perennials that I suggest for a cottage garden are Baptisia, Russian sage, Dwarf Joe Pye Weed, Penstemon, Black Eyed Susans, Echinacea, Coreopsis, Ground Cover Sedum, Prairie Dropseed Grass, Butterfly Weed (Milkweed), Fireworks Goldenrod, Yarrow, Chives, Ornamental Onion (Allium), Iris, and Clematis. I hope this helps. I can't wait to see your garden evolve.

When I worked for a janitorial company, one of the businesses I worked for was an eye doctor. They had mirrors on their counters for people to see themselves when trying on glasses. On one occasion, I went to work and noticed a long narrow burn mark in one of the chairs. We concluded that the mirror was at just the right angle with the sun that it reflected the sun and literally burned a line in the char as the sun set. SCARY! If that chair had been of a cotton type fabric, I have no doubt it would have caught on fire. I'd angle the mirror down, in your greenhouse, to not allow the sun to reflect from it.

if you can find a spot in the greenhouse where the mirror gets no direct sun, it should be fine. But also, the real danger is in glass that concentrates the light (like a magnifying glass) not necessarily in something that simply reflects light. And the little window crystals that make rainbows actually refract light, which is why they are safe.

Regarding to the subject of the mirror. I would not advice to place it in the greenhouse. 😬 I had an acquaintance, who had a small mirror hanging in his sunroom, which caused a fire due to the sunrays being reflected unto the wooden beam panels. He had to rebuild the sunroom and the insurance wouldn’t cover it, since it was considered human negligence on his part 😬

At first, my thought was that as long as you did checks hourly, every season, like one day each season checking it, it would be fine as long as you had your reflection going somewhere other than toward the plants. Then I realized that your building is wooden and that could catch fire. Then I thought it would be OK if the reflection went towards the window, but then I realized it could still reflect back on some of the wooden building or a plant. I might be on the side of your husband and it might be a bad idea to have a mirror outside.

I agree with your husband: you are going to set the green house on fire with this mirror, it’s the first thought which came to my mind when you showed the mirror. The mirror reflects the sun by a concentrated way on something and that’s how a fire may be starting. I’ve never tried myself but I saw some people creating a fire just like that. And when I was a child, I was always told to be careful with that. This mirror will be lovely in your home far away from a window.

I wasn't in favor of you painting the greenhouse but you were right -- the white with the red door is perfect! I had one little jalapeño plant in my planter last summer and it produced many peppers. They start out green, turn orange and then red. I gather you can eat them at any stage. We had too many to eat so, in the fall, I picked all of the ones left on the plant, strung them on a fishing line, hung them off the cork bulletin board in my kitchen and they dried beautifully. I've used them in various dishes and they're great.

I am building some burned cedar planters for my bamboo plants, and I had been using 2x2s for the corner supports in the boxes. They were working okay, but I couldn’t secure them in as many places as I wanted to and at least one of them was cracking. After I saw your video last week I went back to the store to get 4x4s like you used for the corner supports in your beds and they are much sturdier now! Plus then I was able to move the screws holding the boards to the 4x4s farther away from the ends of the boards, which was both easier and reduced the risk of cracking! So thanks for showing your process, it really helped me with my project. (Though dang, 8 foot 4x4s are heeeeeavy)

I have never had success with wildflower seed mixes, and I'm in an area with a long growing season. Some of the wild flowers will not even flower first year, like cone flowers sone black eyes susans, and daisies. I highly suggest getting plants of these for your bed and you will get flowers this year, and they only get better each year after that. A wonderful seed for great cut flowers are zennias. There are so many different kinds and colors combos, and they are easy to grow from seed right in the bed. I chose different colored combos each year, and cut flowers last 10 days after cutting. If deadheading, they bloom till frost. Also a wall of sunflowers is always a good choice. A few single flower varieties are fun, but there are also a ton of multi flower varieties that make great cut flowers too, and bloom all season. If you want another trellis that will stay full of foliage and flowers, I have a trellis that I grow black eye Susan vine on. You get foliage and flowers till frost, and comes in many colors. This year I did the multi color, yellow, white, orange. It's also fun to plant perennial herbs that flower in with your perennial cottage/wildflower bed. Great choice is bee balm, sage, oregano, holy basil.

I know I'm five months late, but as for the mirror, catching the greenhouse on fire was actually my first thought. In my mind it'd be because the sunlight will already be a little concentrated, coming through the glass. If it is reflected off the mirror it might scortch a line of plants but as long as you mind the angle of the mirror so it won't catch sunlight, you should be fine!
