@@DIYDaniePassing along an idea I saw at a seniors home (not that you are one, but I am and know how quickly situations can change ☺️) The planter boxes there were a crèche shape (a V with extended legs via 2 x 4’s) Bonus design: they can be customized to width or length or height (easier on the back), plus portable to re position or reconfigure their layout, takes less soil plus gives excellent drainage, easier to cover (for frost or cold frame). In my horse trough planters I reused those packing peanuts / broken up styrofoam, then a layer of landscape fabric, then top w 6-10” soil depending on what is growing.

Please if you care about your future sanity don't use landscape fabric for future projects use cardboard! Then mulch over the cardboard. Weeds will grow strait into the landscape fabric and turn into a huge mat that is impossible to remove. Also, most landscape fabric is made of plastic so when it breaks down and shreds into a million pieces you will have a yard full of micro plastics. Just trying to save a fellow gardener. Everything looks amazing! Your garden is going to be beautiful. 🌱

Fair warning on the garden boxes, most people cut the landscape fabric that is inside the box so the native soil can be in contact with the soil you put in and it can drain better. The tarp you cut out should line the insides of the wood boards to prevent molding and breakdown of the wood from the soil inside holding water after watering or rain.

The village where I live has started HOA crap without it ever being on the ballot. If I had known that it would become this way(children cannot leave their toys in the front yard, fences must be white, gardens must be planned out and submitted to the committee, etc.) I Never Would Have Moved Here! Love it design wise! But tip for the future and for others, NEVER use landscape cloth! For a garden to thrive, your soil has to be connected to the earth below. It needs worms a microbes and for the roots to be able to penetrate. Your beds are deep enough that they probably would have surpressed the grass/weeds, but a layer of cardboard would have been a much better option

Eventually, grass and weed seed will embed on top of the mulch and fabric and grow. Meanwhile, beneficial insects and worms can’t easily travel between the earth soil and the fabric. And with time the fabric will break apart such that when you finally go to remove it, you’ll be dealing with small pieces of it causing a whole entire mess and limitless frustration. I think fabric mostly works if you cover it with a rock-like material and are diligent about eradicating any weeds in their infancy. There are just too many people online who rue the day they ever installed landscape fabric. I hope Danie has a better experience.

Hope this comment isn’t too far down for you to see, I built furniture for some extra income for a few years out of pallets. The best pallets are also the hardest to take apart. The wood typically will split and be harder to use. But a HUGE help is a tool called a pallet jack. You will get much more useable board if you get one. I use a sawzall to cut down the sides, then the pallet jack pops the boards off with soooo much less labor.

The way your mum always comes and helps you with your gardening - I love it. :) And using the pallets for a fence is an awesome idea! You can paint them whatever colour you want, they'll definitely keep Kenobi out, and you can use the legs as planters, which will make your garden even more garden-y! Also, save money. Love the idea of a pallet fence! An additinal idea: A garden centre I go to also has flower boxes that slot right into the empty spaces of the pallet sides. That might be cool if you build a pallet fence and have flowers flowing on thr side too!

A few thoughts on this one. First, I'm an avid gardener, so I think you're doing a great job with this build. However... I wondered if you mapped out the area thoroughly enough. Instead of plastic, you could kill grass with cardboard as a base, which automatically (over a year or two) breaks down into a mulch. Next, all that mulch! Were you planning to plant outside the boxes with wildflowers? If just walking, you could use pea size gravel for walking areas or broken down hay to naturalize. Brilliant use of wire grid to bridge your beds for climbing veges so that you could walk through. P.S. Yes, paint the greenhouse AND use the pallets for a fence. PLUS, use extra pallets inside your 3 ft deep garden boxes. Your use of old plants will also make a good mulch later. Happy gardening!

Also the landscape fabric will unfortunately release microplastics you probably don't want in your veggies, it damages the soil health underneath (earthworms want to breathe, too) , hinders the rainwater from going into the ground properly and won't suppress weeds that well on top. Many weed seeds just fly in or get introduced by plants and wildlife. It's basically a scam.

Yes, yes, yes to cardboard as week block! Breaks down over time to feed the soil and it's free! Weed block fabric degrades over time into micro plastics and does not feed the soil. ❤

For future reference, there is opaque stain that looks like paint. The beauty is it fades and never peels or cracks. Protects the wood. I have it on my house. Pallet wood would make a great fence!

The picture you showed us of the glass greenhouse is called a modern version of a Victorian greenhouse. They usually have brick at the bottom portion of the walls and the rest is glass and wood. The rest of the framing is usually white. They can have crank windows in the roof. Some have beautiful tile flooring and lots of space to grow plants. Some plants have enough height to grow up a trellis. They are beautiful greenhouses

Husband and I just added a walk through tunnel made of scrap wood raised beds (finished with sealant/color) and cattle panels from the farm store. It goes the length of the front walk. (I’m in a little country town so no one cares about highly polished fancy looking perfection type sh-t). I’ve planted pie pumpkins because husband’s a pumpkin pie freak to grow over the top of it, zucchini, moon flower vines, indeterminate tomatoes (black krim-supposedly one of the best tasting heirloom non gmo tomatoes), vining pea plants and that’s along the front edge of the box closest to the cattle panels. This takes your vining garden plants vertical instead of needing room on the ground. Space saver. Along the other outer edge of the raised bed on either side of the walkway arch, I planted determinate height tomatoes and sweet 100 cherry tomatoes for salad, and marigolds because they keep pests away from your plants. I have branching sunflowers on the ends that bush out and make a lot of flowers, as well as white daisies. It’s going to end up a totally vine covered tunnel to walk through. I hung mason jar solar lights with wire handles on it for now until the vines take over. It’s very magical in the dark. Because our raised beds are double height, we were able to raise the cattle panels up on them and keep them on the edge of the beds using 4x4 posts concreted into the ground which is easier to do than it sounds. Each post has a lantern shaped LED string light cap on it. Super cute. We ran chicken wire, cardboard, and a mat of straw underneath the beds in order to keep weeds and ground pets out, and keep moisture in underneath the beds which cuts down significantly on watering needs. During Halloween and Christmas-the tunnel doubles as a decorating opportunity. Christmas? Lighted archway. Halloween? We’ll use torn up beef netting from Trenton Mills to create a convincing spiderweb tunnel walk through with big fake spiders everywhere, since we built a pvc pipe spider that honestly turned out much nicer and more convincing that we thought it would. Husband wired in light up red eyes and it’s made to look like a massive black widow spider 😂. It’s always a huge hit with people during Halloween display time.

Pallet fence is a good idea. You could cut a design in the top before you nail them up. Like a half heart or half circle or half a diamond and when you put them opposite, the shape is completed. A lot of work, but cute.

I moved a total 2000 kilos of compost, heavy wet dark nutritious compost in one day. I didn’t wanna move the next day, but my goodness so wealthy I feel! By the way, cutting out landscape fabric in the bottom of your raised beds and replacing it with cardboard is beneficial. You get the nutrients from your native soil and you need less watering also.

That mulch will break down and become soil. I find for pathways, stone works much better. Using the pallets to make your fence is a great idea! Just put in gates on it where you most often will access the veg beds. The cucumbers are going to hang down. You might want the arch to be a bit taller so you don't get bonked or have to duck down.

We used pallets to make our family garden fence. Got a few 12 ft 4x4 posts cut in half and put them into the ground. We didn't cement them in. it just really packed them in and bolted the pallets to mount them to the posts. And if you put the same weed barrier and staple them in the empty sections pallet slats, they make great planters for herbs and succulents .

And change sides so you have an even work out😉💙 Never get rid of pallets...so much possibilities...build outside furnutures like a reading chair, or plant beds , compost boxes, if you use a palett you can use the little sides on the back as planter as well great for herbs. Pallets are great to build with. you did well, it looks great.
