There's no such thing as a good record deal. Even Taylor Swift is probably giving away way more than what she should be giving away. The thing the labels give you is exposure and they act as a bank to get you what you want. You have to leverage that exposure the best you can. Akon said it best. Most artists NEED to start learning how to actually be good artists. Meaning they need to know how to optimize their time in the game. That means learning how to write for other artists, learning how to make beats, learning how to engineer, etc. If I'm a artist and I can produce tracks for a pop artist and they pop guess what? That publishing and the royalties come in for life.

The first contract you sign is always going to be terrible because you don't know anything and you're green and if you don't sign you may miss your chance because there are no other good offers. So artists signing bad first contracts isn't so bad or uncommon. It's when you sign a second bad contract is when you have a problem. This is in any industry, not just music. Also, if the entire industry is only offering bad deals, like back in the 80s, there's not much you can do.

They think about the immediate and fail to realize the implications and the long term effects of their poor decisions. Artists have complained for decades about getting screwed out of their publishing or royalties, yet new people keep signing up for more of the same. That's called insanity.
