@@chriscurtain1816 There are sometimes chemicals such as Ferric Sulphate dosed into the sewage to help with the removal of Phosphate, but not all the time, and only in very small doses when it is. But you're right, there are more chemicals used in the treatment of clean water for drinking, namely Chlorine.

The gentleman was a star . nice one DJ I like sewage works as they are good for birding .the only concern is when the unlawfully allow untreated sewage into the river system . they can at certain times i believe as its regulated , but they do abuse the system and get fined when they get caught out with testing of the river water.

I work for a Wastewater Treatment company and the lad came across very well and served as good PR for his employer. He was professional, courteous, knowledgeable and helpful in answering your questions. However, he WILL end up getting a slapped wrist and emails WILL now be circulated around all employees in his company (name of company easily distinguishable on van) reminding them all that access gates onto sites MUST be kept closed at all times. Security of these sites is taken seriously by management (We are required to lock our gates even when the sites are manned).

Hope this guy gets to read all the compliments. If he does he will know we all appreciate your professionalism and the great job you do. It's only when you live through a civil disaster that you get to realise what stars these guys are. I live in Christchurch NZ and our sewage systems got trashed in the earthquakes we had. There were guys working 24 hrs 7 days to get everything back up and working. Standing chest deep in treches in the worst possible . Amazing knowledgeable and much appreciated. I used to go down and hand out goodies to the ones in my road. Thanks mate to you and DJ for highlighting them.

I once went on a tour of our local sewage works and the finished products were clean water that goes in the river and they dried the solids and pelletised the solids and sold it for manure.

Pelletizing the solids and selling it for manure is not okay since it contains a high amount of heavy metals and of course also lots of bacteria in particular e-coli....and they are not good for you. In civilized EU countries 🤣🤣 the solids are incinerated and the heavy metal containing ashes put in special landfills... Advise... Peeps don't use the de-watered / pelletiesed sludge from municipal waste water plants in your garden.. It's hazardous material.

@DJ, sewage is called "Black Water" and any other non-pure "water" is called "Grey Water" and drinking/fresh/rain water is usually called "Potable Water"... Hope that assists you and your understanding!

part of my class 2 fitters course I did in the Army involved water treatment and sewage works. in '96 I ended up "down south" as we called the Falkland Islands, and I was one of the team of Fitters, Sparkies and Plumbers that were put on the RESF team which would take over from Turners running the power station, sewage works and water treatment plant if the Argentinians tried to take the islands again. we had to visit the various facilities and they saved the best until last: the poo factory! we got a tour around, the worst bit was going up the aerator and macerator. It stank to high heaven and one of the blokes that worked there had clearly gone nose blind: he was stood on the walkway that went over the top drinking a brew and eating a sarnie!

The bed of pebbles you walked on at the start is part of a Trickling Filter system that when in operation will have had settled sewage sprayed over the pebbles. So perhaps you should get some domestos on your shoes.

Had a chat with a bloke who empties septic tanks around our area (Queensland, Australia)and he said that the biggest problem at the treatment plant was torn up sheets which people are using as toilet wipes. I recall an interview with a worker in London who said that stockings were bad because the mesh caught on the bricks.

The very same bugs (bacteria) that keeps aquariums clean, the "aeration" by bubbling water breaks the surface and adds way more surface area of the water to contact the air which adds more oxygen. A marvelous natural way to keep aquariums clean
