DJi Action 5 Pro | I'm NOT Upgrading and Here's Why

I'm still rocking the Action 3. The only feature on the 4 that I want is how it connects to the mic without a transmitter, but I don't even care about that because I prefer using the smaller Hollyland Lark M2 mics, which would require a transmitter anyways.

That’s fair dude - DJi set very high standards for themselves and even the action 2 is still very good. I think for the quality of what they put out, it would make sense to skip a few of the new versions to get the most out of the investment already made. The ability to connect to the mic 2 is very handy that’s for sure, but probably not worth an investment on its own if you already have a decent alternative 👍

I already have a Action 4, as well as several other DJI products, and I love them. The Action 5 Pro is definitely on my list.

A lot this year will depend on the software INSIDE the Action 5 Pro. Where did the Action 4 lack compared to GoPro Hero 12 and Ace Pro (I agree it was better in many ways)... let me think of a few. 1) It lacked HDR, a camera with true HLG HDR like Ace Pro clearly had better exposed skies etc. then its peers 2) It lacked speciality creative modes like Night Lapse and Star Lapse like GoPro and Ace Pro 3) It lack Timed Capture like GoPro and Ace Pro to wake up and record a sunrise etc. 4) It had a far worse software stabilization algorithm compared to the class leading Ace Pro in low light which paired with an outstanding in camera noise reduction system to make actually useable low light footage... these are ALL things DJI could have worked on and put in the Action 5 Pro that would make it a really attractive upgrade to me in addition to the box specs of higher battery life and an "all new" 1/1.3 inch sensor whatever that is going to mean. I have no idea if any of these things are going to happen, but I hope there is more to the "story" of the Action 5 Pro than just a couple specs on the box and knowing how DJI pushes forward I bet there will be. See you when you upgrade... ;-)

Fantastic feedback and points David, appreciate you taking the time to share this. I think your points are fair and especially the comparisons to the Ace Pro. Let’s see what they package up and to be fair, if what they bring out addresses some of the points you refer to then I will have a difficult decision to make 😂

I am new to action cameras and would like to make my very first purchase intended for POV driving and night driving and holiday videos. Would waiting for Action 5 Pro be a good idea?

Hi. It’s probably a good idea to wait to see what the Action 5 will offer, as they may included AI to improve night video which would help. The Action 4 is already decent for night photography, but the Insta 360 Ace pro is currently the best for night video in my opinion (for action cameras)

@@Runningonthemind Thanks for the reply. I've considered the Ace Pro honestly, especially since it features one of the best software offerings, but the poor daylight performance that I saw during reviews and quite narrow FOV was a bit of a turn off.

It is always better to wait for release than make a video based on leaks and rumors. Keep you doors open. if the rumors are wrong, this video won't age well.

@@akumarus that’s a fair comment, and if the specs are different then my decision may change. This video, if people watch it fully is actually very complimentary to the Action 4 and isn’t anything against the 5, just that if it is incremental changes then upgrading from already brilliant to a little bit more brilliant won’t make sense based on my specific used case. Not long to wait though but I’m fairly sure now that what is in this video is pretty accurate.

Thanks man. If the info is true then for my used case it doesn’t seem worth it, I don’t need better stabilisation and the video quality at 4K 120 fps is more than enough. If the details on the sensor size are wrong then maybe I would, but to me it doesn’t make sense as too much of the actual hardware is the same. I will wait for the 6 if all the details that I’ve seen and heard are true. Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it 🫡

@@Runningonthemind ok i agree with you watch many reviews yours was on point and what i was thinking… I will be new to action cams… i’ve been researching and it looks like the action 4 for my next vacation at the end of the month? do you use yours for blogging if so do you own any filters ?

@@costtv thanks so much, appreciate you saying that. I do, I must admit I use the pocket 3 more but the action 4 is outstanding. I have the ND filter set for it but not used them much yet as I run really early in the morning. However, I’m off to Mallorca next week and will use the Action 4 and the filters for most of my vlogging from there. The Action 4 will come down in price soon too (it already has in some countries) and that makes it even better value

I used to have a Sony A6500 but traded it for a new Canon lens a few years ago. I would thoroughly recommend the Action 4 and shoot in D-log if you are good with grading. I got the DJi filters for my Action 4 but I got the freewell variable ND set for my pocket 3 and they are fantastic and work perfectly. Freewell is a great make for filters 👍

I agree with you assessment. I have the Action 4 & Pocket 3. My decision to upgrade will be predicated on the actual physical changes and image quality that I see. As the old saying goes, "the opera isn't over until the fat lady sings." So it is with my purchasing new photographic gear -- it will be made when the device is available to purchase.

Thanks Allen, the 4 and the pocket 3 is a great combo isn’t it. I’ve not seen too many other details leaked so nothing yet to change my mind but you never know. I’d like the same sensor as the pocket but I don’t think it’s possible. I’m actually looking forward to seeing how DJi can improve the pocket 3.

On the gopro12 app I can record with the gopro12 while viewing what I’m recording live on my iPad on the GoPro Quik app app , is this possible on the Action4 ?

No one will buy dji pocket 3. Almost all will choose action 5 over pocket 3 which would fail some day with internal battery. I expected they will do that

@@roninr8199 I think you are probably right there, although the pocket 3 has a different used case. The gimbal in the pocket 3 beats in camera stabilization in low light all day (or night I should say).

@@Runningonthemind I have been waiting 6 months just to see what action 5 offers. There is no dji store nor service center in my country. I would have to fly to Thailand to buy one at cheaper cost. Currently have go pro 8. If action 5 is not good then I will get insta 360 x4 and pocket 3

@@roninr8199 sometimes it’s good to wait and especially until September as almost all New tech is released then. I think the action 5 will be an outstanding camera don’t get Me wrong, it’s just not worth if the specs are correct it as I have the Action 4 and use it for running content and vlogging. If you don’t already have the 4 then either get a 5 or get a 4 as it will be fantastically priced after the 5 is released.

@@Runningonthemind Yeah im filming my vlogs with a gopro12 now but as you know yourself its horrible in lowlight. Want to switch to the dji action but it indeed needs to have the specs of the pocket 3

@@MIKE_OSCAR yup - total agreement. I use the Pocket 3 for most of my filming to be fair as the CMOS sensor is amazing for its size. Maybe they will surprise us but I think the leaks seem to be consistent across different places. Seems like an effort to catch up with Insta360 AI than a step forward for the Action. I can say though that the 4 is so much better than GOPRO in anything lower than mid day light even at 1/1.3.

Hi Stefan, it’s not released yet.. a few weeks but the specs seems to be consistent across multiple tech review sites. Hopefully it will be better than what’s been suggested so far and if so, then maybe I change my opinion.

@@roninr8199 I believe so yes, there are a few leaks of it already on a few of the decent review sites on here. It looks to be virtually the same as the 12, but with some enhancements to the attachment system and potentially magnetic mounts (finally) for the GoPro.

@@roninr8199 both GoPro and DJI will launch their new action cameras in September. GoPro has announced their launch of the Hero 13 and new "Hero" (lower end camera) on September 4th on their website. There is no date yet for DJI Action 5 Pro but it almost certainly will be between September 9th and 20th, I think the most likely dates are the 12th or 19th (I think 19th is most likely.)
