I agree with you that Skydio 2 should just follow behind you (when you tell it to) when you are riding the area between the rows of trees. I had the same thing happen to me, it went off to the side, when the easiest path was just to follow. Hopefully Skydio will look at improving this. Thanks for the great testing video.

I own the skydio 2, and the biggest reason I want the Mavic air 2 is that you can turn all the sensors off. Skydio needs to allow experienced pilots to disable the sensors for better cinematography and night flying. That being said, I think these 2 drones compliment each other well.

@barneyrebel01234 жыл бұрын
I think you did a very fair review, and I enjoyed it. However, 2 things I have to criticize, though you did touch on one a little. The MA2 does not have side or top sensors, which you pointed out. Well, at least to me, it's pretty obvious, that's the reason it can't track you in profile mode. And of course, I agree, DJI would've really hit a home run if they would've added those. Like you, I was really impressed on how well it actually did! Not to mention, the collision with a sign at full speed, and still able to fly? LOL, try that with a DJI Phantom right? That thing would've exploded! I'm sure you already know what I'm going to say next. Honestly, if they put those side and top sensors on, there wouldn't be any reason for a Mavic Pro 3. Which is obviously going to come out sooner or later. Myself, as well as many others expect great things from their top of the line Mavic, and I can't wait to see it. I'm thinking they are going to crush it, and kill the Skydio, and everything else out there. I mean, why wouldn't you make you're top of the line Mavic, NOT do that. I'm sure the Mavic Pro 3 will have some downfalls, but, most likely not many. Something else. The Skydio 2 is a great drone, no doubt about it. But, if you really want it to do anything but follow you, you need the transmitter, let's be honest. At that point, you're at $1150.00, but with the MA2, you're at $799.00, not to mention being 9 miles per hour faster, and 10 more minutes of flight time. I know this video, was to show, just a tracking comparison, I'm fully aware of this. And as I said, you did a great job, and it was very fair. Was even a little surprised that the Skydio 2 lost you one time. One comparison video I would love to see you make, since I just found your channel, and you seem to be very fair, would be a MA2 vs. Autel Evo 2 comparison. I hope you read this, and thank you. As a Electronic Engineer, I really want to see the specs on the MA2. I'm not a fan of IR sensors for this type of work. IR is OK but really lacks the data depth you want and need to build a really good 3D map of your environment which is why I think the Skydio does better. The problem with optical sensors like the Skydio uses is 1) don't work at night which limits your night flying and 2) it is a massive amount of data which takes a ton of processing power. The Skydio has the CPU/GPU power to handle the data coming in which ultimately gives it more headroom for improvement. Skydio's problem right now is just refining their algorithms...which is a solvable problem. The MA2 may not be able to improve much because 1) they are missing the sensors as you point out and 2) unless they have some more CPU/GPU power under the hood compared to previous generations, what you see now is what you will get and probably not much more. Hence, I would really love to see the architecture to know whether it has the processing chops to get better with future updates....though from what I can see, I suspect not. It's good for what it is but it is still not an action drone...Skydio still wins in that aspect....though as you point out, still room for improvement.
@Dcrainmaker4 жыл бұрын
Yup, the cross-over between the processing pipeline is interesting. The fact that the MA2 can't do APAS3 within 4K/60 or other high frame-rate modes is telling.

This is a great comparison and a great video. Most "tests" of drones in KZbin are just advertisements for their own products but not actual tests. This is an actual test to show every drone's drawbacks. Skydio 2 was designed as a Tracking drone. So definitely Skydio 2's tracking ability is better. But as a low price drone, I think Mavic Air 2's tracking capability is already beyond my expectation. And considering the price, the video and photo quality, and the flying capability (top speed, battery life, and flying altitude etc.) of Mavic Air 2. I personally think Mavic Air 2 is the winner. Still, I hope Skydio will finally sell their products in China as Skydio 2 is still the best tracking drone in the market so far.

Does either drone (or any drone that you know of) follow from in front? This is what most of us really want. We want a front facing camera, 'leading' us, from a distance. If you turn around, the drone would fly to the 'position' in front, and keep a distance from that perspective. So... Do you know? Thanks Ray!

I think the quest for full drone autonomy is a bit tricky. Most of review I have seen so far, the "pilot" kind of check on the drone and stopped when the drone is stuck. Ideally "autonomous" should not imply that and you should trust the drone. During a bridge inspection, if the drone is stuck, lose battery and fail on the road, it is a big trouble. And if you need people to look over, it kind of remove the need for autonomous. Like here, when the drone goes above someone else property, big trouble. Sure it is good in obstacle avoidance, but it needs much more progress into "conflict resolution" to find its way out and avoid unecessary movement (ie: going away from the road for fancyness).
@FuriousFilipino4 жыл бұрын
The Skydio is still in a class of its own. Not too many of them out in the wild though, and production is stopped until mandatory shelter-in-place is lifted. One thing to note is that the Skydio is not geo-fenced, which is enough reason for me to buy. Only wished that the Skydio 2 is able to fold.
@Dcrainmaker4 жыл бұрын
Indeed, it's a totally different beast. I do really wish however the standard remote was better (in all the ways). And yeah, totally agree on folding - though understand why they couldn't do that without dramatically increasing costs due to the way the sensors line-up.

I got mine and and happy with it. Finally got around to RTFM and found some interesting info. "The aircraft cannot sense obstacles in Parallel." So the only way you can really trust this thing not to hit something is in Trace. Also max speed in Trace is 8 m/s, aka 18 mph. No obstacle sensing in Parallel probably explains your crashes. It does have a higher top speed in Parallel (12 or 18 m/s), so it's still a good option when obstacles aren't a factor.

It was $400ish used and the tracking worked decently for my hiking trip in Switzerland two years ago. The biggest drawback for both drones as you said is size and weight. Great tests. I believe you might be the first to do a comparison of the tracking and obstacle avoidance on both. Anyway, one thing I have always thought would be a great addition to the Skydio 2 is for it to have waypoints. I think that feature would be great especially for surveillance or monitoring areas with trees and other such obstacles. Obviously it wouldn't be good for mapping as you want perfect straight lines but I think for just general monitoring areas waypoints would be great and the Skydio 2's superior obstacle avoidance would do wonders. So now it comes down to which is overall better.... well that's a bit more difficult as both are clearly suited for different things. The Mavic Air 2 clearly has DJI's vision of a small, portable, but fully featured and capable professional quality videography and photography drone. With it's slightly larger sensor, and potentially better image quality I think the Mavic Air 2 is the way to go especially with it being a good $300 less even with the Fly More Combo which comes with 3 batteries! And that $300 on the Skydio 2 only gets you the Beacon and the controller, you still need to buy more batteries. But, if you don't like Chinese products and you want to support USA products and you feel you might be doing more selfie type droning then the Skydio 2 definitely completes that mission. Plus, the Skydio 2 image quality is pretty damn good. One thing I always wish the Skydio 2 would do is exactly what you demonstrated here, that it seems to just have a mind of it's own rather than tracking where you intend for it to track. I would have much preferred for it to follow you down over the turn and through the trees like the Mavic Air 2 did rather than out over to the right over some private yard.... It's like it's too sensitive at times... But I'm hopeful that given the price difference the Skydio 2 might come down in price a bit expecially since the Skydio 2 is really designated for one thing and one thing only. Although I see potential use cases with the controller where flying through the forest might be best with the Skydio 2 with it's obstacle avoidance. And the Skydio 2 kind of beats the Mavic Air 2 in portability if you consider that you MUST have the DJI controller with the Mavic Air 2. If you go with one battery for each and then stuff everything in a backpack it looks like about the same volume if not less for the Skydio 2. Anyway, thank you for the review. Looking forward to more.

@@080micha Ofcourse it will kill the MA2 it should be more advance. But for the price. I will not buy a drone with that kind of price specially if i'm not gonna use it for professional use.

Skydio has a very powerful processor just for tracking purposes.

From a technical point it is a nice and very good test. Altough it isn't responsible behaviour with drones. Apart from flying into and TOO close to objects, a responsible drone pilot doesn't fly with a low battery warning. After crashing don't even consider to fly again without extensive inspection and repair.

Skydio is a flying gaming computer, you can literally mine bitcoins with the amount of computing power it has.

Awesome review and presentation (the only thing you might wanna check is the constant focus hunting on your camera while you talk, looks like it swaps focus on the tools behind you), keep it up.

you should have used the beacon on the skydio, it is design to work with it, where it lost you the first time with the beacon it would have overshoot the house, making a cool shot where it find you again on the other side, you really are not making it a fair comparison using the phone app, the skydio is mad to work with the beacon, not the app
@ronburgundy47434 жыл бұрын
Skydio was also way far out from any trees, so the comparison isn't fair the other way

Nice video. One thing I'd really like to see is it's waypoint functionality. The Mavic air 2 that is.

Thanks for the real feedback. Most of the Mavic Air 2 videos look way too sponsored, even though they don't share that in the info. And still, DJI haven't delivered the Air 2 for sale in most locations (worldwide). Where did you get yours from? Other than that, the only essential thing that I am missing in the new Air are the side sensors.

If you cycle often - try a Quack bike mount. Goes on the stem and a really solid fit and holds phones really well

Your video is awesome!!! After watching this video, I found out that Skydio 2 is a great drone and I found it very attractive. But the biggest problem is that many countries can't get it. The Mavic Air 2 is available to people in most countries. No matter how great a drone is for someone who can't get it, it's worthless. I pray that manufacturers will turn their eyes to the whole world. I want to get it quickly.

Thanks for posting this. I have the Skydio 2 on order. The MA2 was tempting, but after seeing this video, I will wait for the Skydio. I will be doing a lot of flying over water, filming whitewater kayaking, where hitting an obstacle would be fatal.

Haha. Great tests Ray, liked and subscribed! On my tests I got it to crash in active track 3.0 as well. To be fair it was also a challenging scenario. Will have that up on the channel asap. Also mad props for your physical condition. I can't wait to hit the cyclecross bike asap again. Thanks for the motivation, and the great comparison.

Awesome video. I like to see how well it tracks you when you are in a crowd, say running with a group of friends. And if you make sudden stop and sharp turns will it over shoot its path and lost track of your position. Thank you.

Props for doing this. I guess i'm a DJI fanboy. Not opposed of getting the Skydio though. I couldn't help but shake my head at the crash it seen a mile away. It beeped, it warned but still crashed. Facepalms.
