Strava are at times a third party app. They take data from Garmin connect for example and do everything they don't want others to do if that data is linked onwards. They seem completely oblivious to their actual usefulness.. There is definitely something in this on ownership of the data. Strava don't own it, the individual does. It could be an interesting angle to test them on.

The absurd part is that the data that they refer to, on Strava, for most users isn't even generated by Strava. It's generated by Garmin, Wahoo, .... so basically they are saying that once the fit file gets on the Strava platform you no longer decide what happens with your own data if you want to download it again (because the export through the API is basically the same fit file, bar some minor changes. It's not as if they apply a lot of transformations on the input). Somebody didn't think this through ...
@CarlForde2 күн бұрын
What exactly is "Strava Data"? Certainly not my fit file contents. That's mine. I created it. If I want to share it Strava can't stop me. They can refuse to do it for me though, which seems to be net of what they're saying. Like any other obstacle, people will route around it. Kinda like a big traffic circle in front of the peloton. :-)

Great update, thanks Ray! This only makes sense from a business perspective if either 1) Strava plans to re-enable the data access/usage using some type of a paywall or 2) Strava has plans to come out with some amazing features that their user base would want to pay for that would effectively fill the holes that the consumers will be missing by Strava seemingly trying to kill-off the functionality of the Strava connected app world. If #1 were true, it would seem logical that Strava would have announced the pay-for-access scheme along with this change. If #2 is true, Strava should already have the feature set ready to rollout to turn the customer disappointment into customer excitement.

Strava's Morning Epiphany: It’s 7:00 AM in San Francisco, the fog thickens over the bay. Strava’s product team, still groggy from their morning coffee, gather for their daily brainstorming session. One developer leans forward, a mischievous glint in their eye. “Alright, folks, hear me out. What if we change the way segments are calculated again? Let’s make sure no one can find their PR unless they dig through three different screens. Oh, and let’s add another notification setting that defaults to ‘on,’ just to keep them on their toes. It’ll be a real treat for our users.” The room erupts in excited murmurs of approval. “Brilliant! We’ll throw in a confusing new interface update with no explanation too,” someone adds. “Perfect. Ray's analysis is spot on here, and it's a fairly large miss by Strava on understanding why (at least some of) their customers utilize the platform. This is as Ray broadly points out that due to the expansive integration both for data ingest and soon formerly sharing outbound it serves as a useful aggregation platform if you utilize multiple platforms. What is most likely going to happen in short order is 1) people will have to utilize a manual workaround with activity imports / exports 2) someone will build a platform to replace former Strava functionality by integrating with the various other platforms without the significantly restrictive terms 3) that user base that leveraged Strava as a "hub" will cancel their paid subscription as the rest of the functionality doesn't provide enough value standalone. I wouldn't be so bold to say that the number of users that actually initially cancel would be significant. It's certainly possible that the churn metric doesn't change enough to concern Strava in the short term. What it does do and why Strava should be mindful is it opens the door for someone else to innovate in the space without the feature moat that Strava previously had. This story has repeated several times in the tech space. Finally, on a personal data note, Strava is putting restrictions on how others are processing your data (which has a strong correlation to your health), but (and I admit I haven't reviewed the ToS to confirm) I'd suspect that they place no such limitations on themselves and absent data privacy laws for a jurisdiction likely no way for you to opt out of their own "service improvements". P.S. Watched about 2/3 of the video through lunch, so it's entirely possible that I'm repeating Ray's analysis at the end.

There are an estimated 120 million subscribers, of which a proportion use third party app intergration as Ray explains. It's weird that Strava calls it "Strava Data" because it's not. It's Garmin... Wahoo... Zwift... data, but even more core to that it's OUR data, quite literally our biometrics. Seems like there needs to be a service that can intercept/front-run uploads to Strava to ingest the data (again, not Strava's data) and vend that data out to the third party apps that we WANT to use.
@nsmith1312 күн бұрын
This solution kind of presupposes that being on Strava is desirable in itself. If it doesn't do integrations correctly then it's kind of DOA, and all that's needed is the middleman you described, minus the uppity entitlement that Strava have been cultivating.
@RodrigoDeJaneiro2 күн бұрын
That’s exactly what pissed me off.. ‘Strava Data’ … what a bunch of entitled thugs.
@F4UZ3R2 күн бұрын
I completely agree, but there is a Strava owned data there. Which is when they generate the analytics by grouping all the individual data they receive. Looks like they are addressing some GDPR regulations, but went a little overboard (like limiting coaches, that are authorized by you , to see your data only...makes no sense). The rest of its a bummer but they absolutely can do it. From 3rd party apps perspective, it's quite easy to solve it. They don't need Strava, all major devices used by athletes have APIs you can collect user data...just skip Strava and deal which population data based on your own pool of users

@rideItBetterCycling my belief and understanding is that it's nothing to do with an issue with sharing our data with third parties, it's the cost charged by strava's content delivery provider to third parties via the API which is the issue here. it's becoming too expensive for them to sustain providing the API functionality.

I paid for a year of Strava premium this year after having used it for free for like a decade. I know I had the trial, but I was hopeful that I would be able to get deeper analytics and more use out of the premium features, but turns out it's basically the same. I also found Training Peaks and paid for a year of that. Training Peaks is what I was expecting a paid Strava to be. You get all the data, can narrow scope to anywhere in the activity and see adjusted metrics (like what was my average power in that specific climb?), an intuitive interface, planning and projected metrics. It's amazing. I don't see a point to Strava anymore for purposes of training

Because of this rule I don't let my Wahoo data upload automatically to anything. I first make sure I have copies where I organize them the way I want them, and then upload manually.

When I saw this video I thought there was going to be a bunch of my friends that would need to see it who all use Strava and then as Ray went through the details, none of them are affected so won’t care. They don’t use Training Peaks, Velo Viewer or anything else… they share their Garmin data with the world on Strava and job done. Don’t misunderstand me, I think it’s terrible but I stopped paying for Strava when they hiked the prices a year or 2 back. As usual though, most people whinged about the price hike and then kept on subscribing, just like they’ll say this is dreadful and continue subscribing.

fairly simple and easy app to build, especially if they all take the same gpx data set. The issue is not in persisting the data (i dont think you would want that anyways), its in the holding of the 3rd party usernames/passwords for apps that dont have oauth in place (i would presume most do). Strava isn't allowing business connections because its too expensive to ship out via APIs, but doesn't think they can charge these vendors the expense of those APIs. It makes zero sense, they could easily cover this and more by selling targeted ads (its a social platform after all).

This makes me wonder what percentage of data on Strava comes from users who record activities directly in the (a) Strava app versus those transmitted from (b) devices like Garmin, Wahoo, Concept, Apple, or Android through the API. I’d imagine option (b) accounts for a much larger volume of activities. If Strava were to alienate these device makers, it could backfire if they impose restrictive API terms on Strava. This would threaten Strava's role as a 'common platform,' and we’d likely see the fitness community splintering in search of a new central hub. Just some food for thought.
