As I mention in your Autel 2 video (time 5:17), the tallest bulding on the right at 2:33 is creating a fence for your signal... considering your hieght, you will never get a drone getting more distance without increasing altitude... In your Autel 2 video we saw the drone signal back when it arrive close to this building... I am sure that if you look at all you raw footage of all your previous tests, you get near this building when you regain signal...

Looking at the antenna / phone holder it looks like the antenna would be straight up and down in it meaning that the signal would have been going up into the sky on whatever angle you are holding your controller in order to see the screen. I see this as a slight issue for longer range trips since the only way to adjust the angle is to turn the controller to be more level the further out you go. Still not a big enough issue to prevent me from ordering mine when I sell my old Mavic air.

Love the range test! A longer range equates to a much more robust signal in areas where interference can play havoc with lesser technology(as an opinion).

Just got mine today and did a small test flight and I am blown away at the sound level. At full speed in sport mode at about 100' elevation, it makes less noise than the Mini and it's moving twice as fast. It is very stealthy and that is a good thing considering the negativity drone hobbyists usually get. The 4K video is absolutely amazing at this price point. Great video Billy! I can't wait for more videos on this drone from you. I feel like Number 5, "Input, input, need more input!" (Short Circuit movie reference for you youngins)😁

Maybe you should try another range test with the mini and air 1? According to your range test, the air 1 has worse range than spark, but I have seen people get over 5 km with air 1, unmoded, and only have to return because of battery. When you did the test with spark, mini, and air 1, you said that the spark and mini where in 5.8, but the air 1 was stuck in 2.4, which can make a large difference in high interference areas. As far as I know, the transmission system of the mini and air 1 is the same (correct me if I'm wrong), thanks

From the drawings in the user manual it looks like the signal radiates from the top of the phone holder. So if you always point the two phone holder support rods at the drone you will maximize signal strength to/from the MA2. Doing this may have allowed the MA2 to travel further away.

Hey Billy, I think you're going in front of a building at about 10,000ft. That's why every drone with more range disconnect suddenly there. I think in the last Evo take test it was visible after it started RTH.

Thanks Billy, still not sure if I’ll upgrade from my original Air- I don’t think I would fly more than about half a mile away (supposed to be flying with visual line of sight ?), and except for the cool hyperlapse and slow motion I think 4K 30 is fine for my use.... I am looking at the Skydio 2 with the beacon as my next drone to use to follow me on my cycling adventures.... I can’t see lugging this controller for the air 2 with me on my handlebars .... anyway one thing I’m curious about with the Air 2 is why there is no control over the gimbal as far as slowing the movement down in the app ...I know you were looking for that control yesterday. What are your thoughts on that
@ArizonaWyldwest10
@ArizonaWyldwest10 4 жыл бұрын
I realize this is a old post. Just some info for you. I agree with the other comments about antenna angle. I’m a HAM radio operator so I understand how the antennas work. The MA2 does have the different antenna system then the older models which where two plastic antennas that radiate the signal out in a 360° radius from the flat sides. Basically they are Omni-directional. The MA2 antenna top needs to be pointed directly at the drone because it’s like a beam antenna where the signal is concentrated much more in a straight direction but still a funnel shaped signal going out towards the drone. Picture a funnel and and you can understand how it sends out the signal compared to a complete 360° circle off the long flat end of a Omni-directional antenna. The MA2 directional beam style is one of the things which makes the signal more powerful along with the Ocusync. Not trying to be rude Billy, just some if you wanted to try again. I really like your channel and it has been helpful so I appreciate your time and efforts. I believe even in the environment you tested this you could get maybe another 2,000 feet or much more. If you test again I’d suggest once it gets out to about 6,000 feet to rotate the controller up towards the sky and you will see the signal bars go down. Rotate back down towards the drone and you will see them go back up. It’s very noticeable when your not directing towards the drone. It doesn’t need to be pointed exactly at the drone because it does go out in a funnel shape but the more direct it is the stronger signal to drone. As I said, I’m not trying to be critical but, using Omni-directional and Beam type antennas in my HAM radio use has tough me a lot. I have even built some antennas in the past and tested them years ago. Hope this helps. Thanks again for all you videos and help. Enjoy Sir.

I'm used to this. In a much denser urban environment with much more interference my mavic 2 pro goes from somewhere between 3.3km's to 4.2km's. The reason being I takeoff from my rooftop which itself is 140 feet from the ground and I fly the drone at 140-200 meters and sometimes even at 300-400 meters altitude. The higher you go more stable the connection. But realasticly if you fly low, expecting any drone to go beyond 2 miles in an urban environment at this point in time is useless. Even the inspire 2 I rent sometimes behaves the same.

@@tiredoldman5329 You can fix your problem with a directional antenna like a patch... helical or a yagi which all have a higher DBI which means a smaller beam width but more focused power for sending the signal out as well as receiving the signal in. An example of this would be like if you stood in a field and someone else was 400ft away and they are trying to tell you something but you can't make out what they are saying because are ears would represent a Omni directional antenna so it's great for things closer in range. But if you funnel your ear with your hands it makes it alot easier to understand what is being said at greater distances because we used are hands to create a directional anntena 👍🏻

EXCELLENT TO THE POINT RANGE TEST!! BUT... It all depends where you are because you keep talking about the mavic mini.. And I've seen tons of range tests where the MAVIC MINI FELL APART where ocusync did not. I guess you could say in your environment where you do the test. Maybe when you get to that particular point where you are all the time there's something seriously interfering.. if you go to another place it may be completely different. If you did it in a different environment all of those ranges could be completely different. ;)

I own a Mavic Air and every time I flew it I was terrified (knees would shake... I know; I'm a punk) so I thought I had issues (which I probably do) Then I picked up the 2S and I saw what the problem was. Mavic Air is unflyable a 1k flying paper weight. I'm killing it; it actually was a pretty cool drone, took cool shots and had tons of features, and processing power for its time which was like two years ago but it was horrible to fly and in my opinion designed to die right after your warranty or insurance runs out which is typically 2 years.

Maybe MA2's occusync 2 is exactly the same version that's in the MP2 but DJI Marketing Dept decided they need to boost the distance spec to compete with/out do EVO II's distance...i.e., purely a paper bump?...I'm jussayin....Even so having occusync 2.0 is impressive feature on MA2 @ $799.

I made it to the 1 mile mark on my Air 2 from my living room 🤪 in an urban area. Made it to Dunkin Donuts and got scared and turned around lol I can’t wait to take it out into open land and go further.

New pilot here. Is "line of sight" an umbrella term when referring to how far away you can fly your drone? It seems like people fly their drones beyond line of sight most of the time like in this video

Mavic Mini 9500 ft ????? You are joking, right ? 950 ft sounds more like Mavic Mini. I have it, his range is not even close to 9500ft

His test is from atop a very high structure and complete, 100% line of sight between controller and quad. A real test would be in "real world" flying conditions.

A great test but ... What happens if you really lose it? Does your RTH operate flawlessly? And technically, this is all in violation of VLOS rules. Which we safely ignore?

So i was wondering whats up with mine? I purchased one of these drones and took it over to my dads house to fly it. He lives in a normal neighborhood with power lines and more and more homes around him. I've watched videos like these where guys can fly over 25k ft away before losing signal. I was only getting 4k at my dads house. Is there something i am doing wrong or is it just interference?

A 10 Kilometer range is impressive but considering you got 15 minutes flight time (approx) in your previous film though I do realise you were being cautious with that number, a longer range coupled with a not so impressive battery is a curious mix.

Billie, do you think that the power lines had caused interference with your drone? Do a range test away from power lines and see if you get a better range.

FINALLY GOT MY MAVIC AIR 2. Absolutely love the size, the quality the controller and the DJI fly app.. I'm so glad to get rid of the DJI go 4 app talk about clunky and using tons of resources.. CONTROL IS AWESOME!! I thought it was going to be big but it's actually small.. well it feels small in my hands. It feels perfect and pinching is just fine.. hell of a lot easier to pinch with this remote than the phantom 4 pro and people do that all the time.. I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW MUCH THE OLD CONTROLLERS USED TO CRAMP MY HANDS AND FEEL AWKWARD.. how quickly I can set up with this controller is amazing.. not to mention the 240 minutes battery life that will charge your phone and last a long time... As for the ANTENNAS. The manual says to point the TOP OF THE ANTENNAS towards the Drone!! You should not be pointing your antennas straight up and down unless the Drone is above u.. Just to address one quick thing.. this is in regards to how you cannot adjust the sensitivity of the sticks or the gimbal.. Using sport mode, normal mode, and tripod mode slows everything down perfectly for each mode.. I remember setting my sensitivity for my sticks in my gimbal for normal mode by recommended drone reviews.. AND IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S ALREADY SET PERFECTLY... Normal mode is super smooth in the gimbal is really controlled and slow. Tripod mode slows the gimble In The sticks down even more and it's perfect.. This wasn't the case with the mavic pro you had to figure it out on your own with manual settings.. IT LOOKS LIKE DJI DID THEIR HOMEWORK!! I hope they bring waypoints back.. it's not a professional feature it should be on this drone. And it would be welcome if you can adjust the stick sensitivity manual along with gimbal.. but as of right now I think it's perfect.. As for sports mode it is jerky and quick on the sticks and the gimbal. But that's what sport mode is all about.. it's fine.. you got that switch right there!! switch from anymode you want quickly..I think DJ I really thought things out with this drone..

In the perfect environment I think the extra range for the Mavic Air 2 over the Mavic 2 series may be down to longer battery life instead of better transmission signal.

Not sure why you said it beat the Mavic 2 pro when you said earlier that the Mavic 2 pro could have gone further but " my remaining battery life wouldn't have allowed it" (your words not mine). I get it, and I agree the Mavic air 2 is incredible, leaps and bounds beyond the original air, and a lot of great features for the "Price". But when the newness and hype has worn off the comparisons to the Mavic 2 pro that some reviewer are making are going to seem unrealistic. I watched two different reviewer proclaiming that if you are into photography the clear choice between the Mavic Air 2 and the Mavic 2 Pro is the Mavic Air 2 because it has 48 megapixels and the Mavic 2 Pro has 20 megapixel. "Technically" yes the Air 2 has 48 megapixels, "technically". But realistically and in every way that really matters it has 12 megapixels. The Quad Bayer filter is splitting each of those 12 megapixel into 4 which technically equals 48 (4 x 12=48). It's a neat smoke and mirror trick but it is not going to give you a better quality photo over an actual 20 megapixels. Look at it like this if you put the Quad bayer filter on the 2 Pro it would be 80 megapixels. But I doubt that there would be much improvement it the photo quality over the 20 megapixels. Add to that the sensor on the Air 2 is half the size of the sensor on the 2 Pro. I could go on and on with examples but I'm sure you get the point. I was totally onboard to get the Mavic Air 2 because I'm a photography enthusiast. But after my Air 2 delivery was delayed and I dug deeper I found a number of deal breakers for me and cancelled my order and ordered the Mavic 2 Pro. If I was stepping up from the Mini I would have been very happy with the Air 2. But since I'm serious about photography the Air 2 won't work for me.

hello I would like to buy the new air 2, I am Italian but I often go to the United States. obviously I want to fly it both in Italy and in the United States, so is there an FCC version of the drone and another CE? or does it switch based on location? I am undecided to buy it in the Italian store for this reason

You wasn't facing the directly in the direction of the drone. Check your video where u lost connection.... You was slightly off the direction of the drone based in the telemetry on the your phone. You need to do this test again. Especially with the new and recent updates Drones has gotten major updates since then. It's an entirely new drone from when it first came out!

I’d like to see the Fly App improved with a black background or something behind the onscreen text so it is easier to see. Also wonder why they elected to have the little mini map default to a useless icon instead of current location on he map.
